The following interesting episode in the career of the great composer, Wolfging Mozart, which occurred when he was achild, we find in the N. Y. Musical Review, translated from the German of Rad. The apartments of the Queen at Versailles, were open, They formed a series of fifteen large saloons, which were lighted by more than seven hundred candles, shining from candelabras, and chandeliers, wrought in the most artistic style, and shedding their light upon . the finest works of sculpture and painting, upon vases, clocks, tapestries of the most elegant and costly character. Morover, all these luxurics were multiplied by immense and most beautiful mirrors It will repay perusal : in gilt frames, which covered the walls. And yet these private rooms of the . Queen might have been called simple, . compared with those occupied by the Marchivness of Pompadour, just asthe appearance of the Queen herself, surrounded by the princesses in the above apartments compared with that of the . Marchioness, covered with diamonds, and surrounded by the ministers and high dignitaries of the country, who looked and acted like the real Queen ; while the latter, Maria of France, the unhappy daughter of Stanislaus Leszinsky, seemed to be east down, but resigned. The King had not yet made his appearance ; and the Marchioness, as weli as her aristocratic minions, indulged in that frivolous but intellectual conversation which was the fashion of that time. But even when the worn out King came into the apay' ment, and talkeu saceording to the court ceremonial for a quarter of an hour to the Queen, the spiteful Marchioness continued the conversation to the terror ofall present, but showing . by this the immense influence she exercised overthe broken spiit of Louis pas At last the conversation became general, and the King sat down at the eardtable, giving at the same time orders to let the Mozarts, who were waiting in the . aute-chamber, make their appearance. The children commenced playing a very difficult and brilliant duo, and although they did this as usual, in a very superior manner, nobody listenel to them but the Queen, the Princess M’ine . Victoire, and Countess Such a} reception they had certainly not expected. Nannei felt the tears start in hin . eyes, and Wolfgang was so indignant . that none but M’me Victoire had found a word of encouragement for them, that he said to his father : “Come, Papa, let us go; they do not understand music.” The vice conductor tried in vain to calm the indignation of the litle virtuoso who found himself burt in that which was dearest to him, his pride as an artist. “Well,” said at last the father, “let us go; butdo you know whatthe world will say : The Mozarts did not succeed at the court of Versailles? If I was in your place, I would play once more, and force, by the beauty of my performance, the King, as well as the whole ‘Tesse. . fore by the player. i child, court to listen to me.” “You are right !” exclaimed the boy with brightened eyes, and at once went up to the King, saying: “Will your Majesty give me a theme, upon which I can improvise 2,’ Louis, surprised, looked up, at the . sound ef the child’s voiee. He had . really furgotten what was going on . around him. “Ah!” he satd, “the children ; what . dees the boy want ?” Madame Adelaide translated the wish of Wolfgang. “With pleasure,” answered the King, giving hima theme from an opera of Lully, at the time very popular. Wolfgang bowed in a_ highly becom. ing manner, and went back to the piano. The King could not help looking after the little fellow, and although he re. sumed his card playing, yet he listened to the boy’s performance. But suddenly he threw the cards upon the table, and rose with the greatest surprise in his countenance. The court followed, and soon was Woifgang Mozart surrounded by the heads and chief dignitaries of one of the most powerful empires of Europe. The little virtuoso felt his heart-blood stirred by the approach of all these people, and he roused himself to do his utmost—his very best. The King drew several times his hands over his face and forehead, in order to aatisfy himself that he was not dreaming. The Queen's eyes became wet, and Madame Victoire, herself a virtuoso on the piano, could scarcely repress her astonishment and admiration. All these people, a Pompadour, a Soubise included, felt moved as they had never been before. Something unusal occurred to them ;the invisible power of the great and beautiful took hold of them and elevated them high above the dust of triviality. They felt themselves, at least for a few minutes, different and ter. pe Welfgang had finished. A loud ‘bravo’ . New York Evening Post, assures us of the King gave the signal to a general and, at this Court. very uznsual applause and M’me Victoire, the favorite daughter of Louis XV., hurried to the little artist, covering him with kisses and caresses, Meauwhile, the King had approached M’me de Pompadour, in order to express to her his delight with the performance just heard, and the Marchioness was therefore induced to order the boy to be brought to her, which was, of course, immediately accomplished. “A little fellow,” she said, with a curl of her lip, “but a genius. Do place him before me upon a table.” This was done; and as she smiled upon him most condescendingly, Wolfgang bowod over to her, in order, as was his way, to kiss her. But how flashed his eyes and burnt his cheek, when the Marchioness proudly turned back, and quite indignantly he exclaited: Fortunately for him, these words were spoken in German, so that only the Princess Victoire, who stood near by, could understand them ;.but she was too much pleased with the boy and his remark io repeat it. Woifgang was, of course, also here obliged to satisfy the curiosity ard vulgar taste of the high folks by that trick of playing on the piano after the keys had been covered with a napkin, a feature which had startied so much the courtiers at Vienna. After he hai repeated this farce several times, he said, with some disgust, to M’me Victoire ; “They are all alike ; only you alone here understand music: and therefore give me something to do which is better and worthierthan what I dic just now.” “But what ?” asked the Princess. “Give him a minuet, and let him add the bass to it,’’ advised Countess Tesse. “Good !” replied Madame. “Monsieur Le Grand, will put on paper a minuet for the boy without the bass 2” Monsieur Le Grand, the music teacher of the princesses, somewhat known by his compositions, smiled, but acquiesced in the wish of his royal pupil. This was hardly done, when the child took the pen, and without even approaching the plano, put in the best manner a base under the composition. Monsieur Le Grand became, in consequence of this, quite amazed azd conused, for he knew too well that he himself was not able to do it. However, the admiration and the surprise of the company was not atits climax “Well,” said Madame Adelaide, who sang very finely. “If you can do so much, you will not shin accompanying j. mein a cartiline, which 1 am going to sing, and which L feel confident you do not know.” “fimpossible !” exclaimed Le Grand ; “this is quite impossible !” “I will try it,” said the boy, and sat . down at the piano. Madame Adelaide commenced singing, and the child tried the accompaniment, as wellas this canbe done with a song which has never heen heard beBut as soon as the cavatina was finished, he begged the Princess to repeatit; and then he not only played with the right hand air, but also added with the left hand the bass, without hesitating for onee, and did this ten times, every time altering the character of the accompaniment. This was the we plus nltra ever heard, and, too, of a child of seven years ! What an evening for our hero ! How they admired, adored and caressed the Madame Victoire took a diamond breoch from her dress, and pinned it to her favorite’s frock ; everybody coaxed hin, everybody feli anxious to give him tokeus of respect and admiration. Singing Suetts.—Mr. Taylor, the tourist, when at Cuthculoa, in Ceylon, on goiug at night on a lake, near the fort, was struck by a loud musical noise proceeding from the bottom of the water.
