NEVADA JOURNAL
Joun G. Saxe, during his recent convalescence from a long and severe sickness, wrote a letter to a lecture correspondent, near Boston, asking him to
‘wait a little longer.’ The concluding
portion contained the following lines:
‘Alas ! my dear friend, could you see
My features so meagre and paid,
You would own that my ‘invalid’ plea
Is not altogether invalid.
But though I’ve been tortured and wracked,
And for months have been wasting away se,
You may just set it down for a fact,
It’s not my intention to stay so!
The doctor (he comes to me yet)
Is welcome to some of my ‘dust,’
But Nature’s exorbitant debt—
I mean to pay that—wheu I must!
P. S.—I’ve handed the doctor his pay
For potions ‘too tedious to mention ;’
And nature (God bless her!) to-day
Has promised another ‘extension !? ?
January, 1857.
While Saxe writes like that, there is
ao fear of his being a ‘grave man,’ says
in exchange paper.

still shown in Hamadan, in Persia,

from Bagdad to the Caspian, and in the
way from Isfahan to Tabriz and Ardebeel. It stands in the midst of a confused and melancholy heap of ruins,

those of the ancient Edbatana, the Me}
dian capital; being itself a mean clay
built town of about 9000 houses, with a
population of about 40.000 souls, ineluding 60) Jewish families, and nearly the
came number of Armenians. In the
time of R. Benjamin, of Tudela, it contained, as this traveler es, about four
thousand habitants. It has
been famous in modern days only for its
manufacture of leather; but no city of
Persia presents more objects of antiquarian Among these is the
tomb of our two worthies. It is situated
in the centre of the city, in front of one
of the Synagogues.
highest veneration, and kept ia the highest state of repair. The fillowing is a
translation of the inseription on the
dome over these tombs: “On Thursday,
the 15th of the month Adar, in the creation of the world 4484, the building of
this temple over the tombs of Mordecai
and Esther was finished by the hands of
two benevolent brothers—Elias and
Samuel, sons of the late Ishmael of Kachan.” Ferrier, in his “Caravan Journeys and Wanderings,” says, “It is now

tombs are made of rather hard wood,
which suffers little from the effects of
time. They are covered with Hebrew
inscriptions, still very legible, of which
Sir John Malcolm has given the following translation: ‘At that time there was
in the palace of Suzs. a certain Jew, of
the name of Mordecai; he was the son
of Jair of Shimei, who was the son of
Kish, a Leujamite, for Mordecai the
Jew was the second of that name under
the King Alhasuerus, a man much distinguished among the Jews, and enjoying great consideration among his own
people, anxious for their welfare, and
seeking to promote the peace of all

Errective Erriuvia.—tThe followng extract in relation to Chinese warfire will recall to mind Lord Dundonald’s scheme for the capture of Sebastopol. It would seem, however, that the
Chinese have the advantage of the ‘outaide barbarian’ in putting the theory
into practice. They evidently place
great reliance on appeals to the senses: .
Cawnese Warrare.— The ofticial
maritime force of the Celestial Empire
at Canton have adopted a singular mode
of warfare. Dispairing of success in ordin iry contest with a British fleet, they,
every night, approach the ships of war
on the windward side, and explode some
sort of vessel which fills the air with
the most fetid odor conceivable. The
ships are so impregnated with this horrid smell as to be almost uninhabitable.
How soon the British power will be extinguished is at present the anxious
thought in the Celestial Empire.
Nev Postar. Law.—The leading
features of the new postal act recently
passed by Congress, are as follows:
Books may be seut in the mail, prepaid, for one cent an ounce; provided
they do not weigh over 400 pounds, a
listance of three hundred miles. and
over that distance two an ounee.
Newspapers, periodicals, pamphlets, ete

eight ounces, half a cent an ounce —
Every circular, business card, advertisecents

printed matter, one cent a sheet—not to
Feil Over three ounces. Postmasters
are t required, even as a matter of
courtes% to deliver papers or packages
to clubs, ess they come regularly addressed by mail.

i> A capital anecdote of Lord Raglan, when wounded at Waterloo, is told
in London. ‘The authority is the Prince
Orange. The Prince used to recount
that not a word announced the entry of
a new patient, nor was he conscious of
the presence of Lord Raglan (then Lord
Fitzroy Somerset) till he heard him call
out inthe usual way—“Hallo! don’t
carry away that arm till I have taken
off my ring.” Neither the wound nor
the operation had extorted a groan from
the wounded soldier.

City Exection.—The election for

New Rovute.—The question as to the
hest route through the Sierra Nevada
mountains is one of great importance to
Californians, and since the wagon road
appropriation by Congress, we notiee
that efforts are being made in various
parts of the State, to get, the road in
particular localities.
The people of San Joaquin county
seem to think that they have discovered a new ronte for the wagon road to enter better than others. They call it the
“Big Tree Route,” and assert that it far
surpasses any other road through the
mountains ever “ driv’ ” over by an ox
team. Their description, however, must
be taken with allowance for the “variations” for they are interested witnesses.
If they could get the new roadthat way
things would “look up” in those parts.
f= Tobacco was introduced into
England soon after the discovery of Columbus, by Sir Walter Raleigh, and
tience found its way thro’out Europe;
but not until fifteen years after do we
hear of it among the Turks. whence it
seems that the Orientals must have acquired their knowledge of this plant
from some other neighbors. But from
whatever clime we first derive this fragrant weed, there is no doubt that the
earliest method of using it was in a pipe;
and not in the form of cigars, or by imbibing the juice by chewing—which latter practice was unknown to the early
lovers of tobaeco, and is unpractised by
the Orientals, even at this day —Oscan. yan.

United Vineyard Pro Castillion and Lendon
Dock Brandies. These Liquors will have a full fruity
flavor, and a beautiful, sparkling color. Common Rectified Whis' ey will be changed by the use of the oil of

RIL OF GIN conve ts the poor st Whiskey to Hollavd Gin, Schiedam Schnappz, Rose Gin, Swan Gin, English Gin, &c.
LACOUR’S CONCENTRATED ACID will, in five

Vinegar and twenty-five gallons of water to thi ty gallons of the most acid Vinegar that can be found in the
market. By the use of Lacour’s Concentrated Acid,
vinegar can be made for one dollarand sixty cents per

FOR MAKING LIQUORS, Lacour’s Oils require no
preparation—only pour the oil into the Whiskey and
shake well. The Liquors thus made will have a fine natural ar ma,a full, rich, oily taste ; a beautiful transpar
ent color anda fine bead. Lacour’s oils exert three distinct properties in converting common whisky to brandy
gin, &. The first property combines with and subsides
in ‘he form of floculent particles the whole of the rain
oil, (Amylic Alcohol.) The Whiskey is thus deprived of
that peculiar irritating and burning taste, and becomes
a neutral spirit; the second property consists in an oily
mucillaginous taste imparted to the liquor, which renders it mellow, and imparts an «ppearance of great age ;
the third property is exhibited in the rieh vinous natty
odor that is imparted to the liquor, which reude s distinction from the genuine brands impossible.

A CARD.
ProMPTED by an honest desire of my heart, I wish to
lay before the public a case which deserves a light com
mendation, not only as an act of scientific skill, but that
of humenity, also. About two years ago, I suddenly and
from causes unknown to me, was seized with a fit of Epilepsy, which owing to my imabilitto meet the expenses
consequent apon athorough medical treatment, and the
discouragement which I met with on attempting it. soon
bebome such (as I was then led to believe.) as to defy the
skillofa physician. I was frequently, whilein pursnit o
my calling, thrown down to the ground without the slightest warning. and althongh insensible to the agonies, I yet
despised the miseries of my life, and socn learned to look
upen those who world render me assistance or shelter me
from danger as enemies who conght to prolong the misery.
of my existence. While in this State, and having pre
vious to my afflictions tasted the swects of life, I once
more was indneed to attempt seeking aid of a physician,
and, b¢ recommendation, called on Dr L. J. (zapkay. I
told him my stances. and my inability to reward
him for his ser s—regardless of which, however, he at
