Chinese Opinions of the War with Englawd.
James Hanley, Chinese interpreter,
has furnished the S. I’. Bulletin with
the translation of a letter written by la
Chinaman at Canton, to a native friend
in California, which gives some idea of
their estimation of the relative strength
of the different nations. The writer begins by saying:
. ©The times among us are very_boisterous, Our coufitry is convulsed with
warring with our own people and foreigners. “lhe sah-sam-hong [thirteen
foreign factories] was reduced to ashes
but a few days since, which I suppose
will be the means of bringing legions of
barbarians to our shores to make war
against uss “The neglect of our handarins in enforcing the law when it is nescessary; and at other times passing beyond the prescribed bounds assigned
them, together with the audacity of foreigners on our shores, have beer the
means of bringing about the troubles
from which we have suffered and are
most likely to suffer for some time to
come. As, for instance, the lap-samhong. Our Governor Yeh ordered each
hong [factory] to be destroyed, which
was done, and for which we must suffer.
Such was an injustice on our side. We
ought not to have destroyed'the hongs
of the people of the nation who were at
peace with us. But what limits can be
set to men who seek revenge ?”
The writer speaks of the indignation
that burst forth among the Chinamen at
the time the “ English barbarians” invaded their country, and then gives it
as his opinion that a just retribution will
soon be dealt out to these “ barbarians.”
“The Emperor of Russia,” he says, ‘is
about to join our cause, and with myriads of warriors suppress the rebellion of
our own people and sweep the vagabond
English barbarians off the face of the
earth, and by that means establish the
tranquillity so much desired throughout
the length and breadth of the Middle
Kingdom—[China.]”
By this it would appear that the wri-.
ter is somewhat acquainted with the re-.
cent quarrel between England and Rus-)
sia, but whether the idea cf Russia’s interference between the “English barbarians”’ and their own Celestial people,.
spruag spontaneously into his head, or!
was placed there by outsiders, we don’t
know. The writer, however, as well
as his Celestial brother, give evidence
that they are not vastly pleased with
the idea. a
Speaking of England as being one‘ef
the three great nations of the earth, China and Russia being the others, he
says:
“Yet withal they are weak when compared with Russia, which has been thoroughly tested of late. They with myriads from other nations for two years
could not succeed in taking one city,
[Sebastopol ?] but had to return home
well beaten, and thereby frustrated in
their designs on the honorable Russian
nation. What success can they expect
when the great Russian naticn will be
at our aid? None whatever.”
The following, which is a portion of
the letter, smacks somewhat of proseription :
“Now the red-haired barbarians, . nglish} and other foreign devils, [fan qui]
who come to our shares, add nothing to
our benefit. We supply them with tea,
rhubarb, silks and many other valuable
commodities, while they in return bring
us nothing but opium. * us ss
Our Central Empire furnishing for many
years, teas, sugar, and other: commédé
ties, to these ungrateful barbarians, will
henceforth be closed against them, depriving them thereby of the valuable
products of our Empire. Ina few years
they will know themselves better, when
they have: suffered trom the wants of
that with which we furnish them, as we
are determined from hence onward,
never to admit any more foreigners on
our coast.” :
Enp oF THE Worup at Hanp.—Paris is very much excited by an astronomical controversy at which all do not
laugh! The two most eminent astronomers, one of France, the other of Germany, are arguing whether the world is
to come to an end on the thirtieth of
June next! All the scientific world, it
appears, have long been uneasy at the
approach of a comet to our earth; and
though it is conceded by the disbelievers that the contact must take place in
June next, they argue (or Mons. Babinet, the French astronomer, for them,)
that, as comets are but atmospheric affairs, it will not materially affect us.—
The German, on the contrary, says that
it will not merely be the passing of a
“gentleman who smokes,” but that its
centre is solid fire, and: that the surface
of the earth will be turned into a sea of
fiery lava, by his formidable cigar!
SuHarp SHootrers.—Lord Evelyn, son
of the Earl of Bute, and an officer in the
Guards, wore long mustaches, and appeared in the House of Commons, of
which he wasa member. One day, Mr.
C—y thus addressed him: “My Lord,
now that the war is over, won’t you put
your mustaches on the peace establishment?” “I do not exactly know whether I shall do that,” replied his lordship; “but I would advise you to put
your tongue on the civil list.”

With a smart native lass at the window,
“Do your widows burn themselves? pray tell me that?”
Said the pretty, inquisitive Hindco.

For the Nevada Journal,
One evening, as I was trudging home,
feeling very tired, (fof I had been out
since morning,) I laid me down beneath
the lengthening shadow of an oak tree;
hard by a stream, where once clear waters, rolled, a muddy tide oceanward.—
There, blasting the face of mother earth”
with their foul touch, were a group of .
remorseless, iron-fisted miners, delving’
beneath the mossy banks, for those hid.
dea treasures of corruption —Gold.—
There, too, another gang, with ithpipye
hands and grovelling heafts, twining the
waters from their natural course, were
busily engaged —there, with unflagging zeal in thé great cause of Mammon;
a woodman swung his axe, felling the
noblest of trees, in this ourgolden land
——a Sugar Pine. Each seemed intent
‘upon destroying nature’s charming face.
I fell asleep. Methought a strain‘ of:
ha ett
. Heaven-born music floating on aerial .
wings enthralled my senses: My soul .
seemed overwhelmed with the serenity
of happiness. On gushed the laughing
tide —now striking against some giant;
soulless rock, and falling back, a shiid-'
}em of degraded nature !”
dering spray of melody — each téax a
note; now gliding fearless by. Never '
had my sout drunk in such heavenly
sounds. TI listened wondering. Now
came a mournful dirge-like sound of
such deep feeling and intense degpait,
that seemed to petrify my heart with
horror! And ever and anon I heard!
the trumpet voice of wind-pierced treés,
roll out in the deep tones of dark, unutterable anguish—-Woe! Woe! Woe!
I asked my soul, what meant the’
change? And straight a rushing sound
as of a flight of tsmpést winged angels,
and a voice crying, “’Tis the last requiThen camé
a shock as of a mighty earthquake, and
with it a sound, like to the breaking of
all nature’s heart!! I woke weeping,
and starting to my feet, on the still
trembling earth, I beheld the giant of
the forest, laying peacefully on the bosom of that mother who had nurtured
him in infancy. Close beside mo sat an
Indian squaw, playing her Jews harp ;
and on looking Heavonwards, I'perceived a flight of ducks ! ” Strange materials
to produce such an effaet upon the mind’
through the agency ofthe ear. By the
mighty shade of the mightier oak ’neath
which i slept —ecatch me napping again

~. in Yor the Nevada Journal,
About™the~best instance of “ April
Fooling,” that we have heard of for
some time, happened in Grass Valley,
on the ist inst. ‘There is a young maw
avery hard working young man —
in fact quite a smart young man, in that
village, who is somewhat of an artist, i.
e. he is slightly addicted to caricaturing
ball room ladies in that Vicinity. We
callhim Mc. He contemplated the possibility cf drawing a landscape froin his
cabin door; and the more he thought of
it, the more he considered the plan feasible. At last, with feverish energy, he
commenced, but scarcely had his pencil
touched the paper, when he observéd
an old friend coming along. «Hallo!
Mc., how are you? Why, what’s that
you're doing?” “Oh! nothing particu!
lar,” said our artist; “only sketching
this view.” “ Why, you don’t mean’ to
tell me that you go to work in ¢hat'old
fashioned w ay, do you? Tt tel’ yeu
what; I'll just give you a ‘wrinkle,’
that I found out myself some years ‘ago.
Get a large looking glass, a ‘sheet «of
tissue paper, and about 50 cents worth
Demar Varnish; then place your glass
so as to contain the image of the view
to be sketched, and having smeared the
tissue paper with the varnish, lay it
over the surface of the looking glass,
and sketch away.” “Me. pondered a:
while over his friend’s advice, (after he
had left,) and having at length conclu:
ded that there might be something in
it, wended his way to town, purchased
the necessary articles, came back, and
not until he had frequently failed in hid
experiment, did he think of its being
the jst of April, and that there really
might be something in it: And yet hé
feels so loth to “acknowledge the corn,”
that he affirms that it certainly could be
done, if he could only get paper thin
