The Growth of Machinery. Emerson, in his “English traits,” has ® striking and curious chapter on the above subject from whieh we extract the following: “'Tis a curious chapter in modern History, the growth of the machine-shop. Sik linndred years ago, Roger Bacon explained the procession of the equinoxes, the consequent necessity for the reform in the calendar, measured the length of the year, invented gunpowder, announced (as if looking from his lofty eell over five centuries into ours) ‘that a machine can be constructed to drive ships more rapidly than a whole galley of rowers could do; ; nor would they need any thing but a pilot to steer them.— Carriages might be made to move at an incredible speed, without the aid of an animal. Finally it would not be impossible to make machines which by means ef a suit of wings, should fly in the air in the manner of birds.’ But the secret slept with Bacon. The six hundred years have not yet fulfilled his words. Two centuries ago the sawing of timber was done by hand, the carriage wheels ran on wooden axels, the land was tilled by wooden ploughs. And it was to little purpose that they had pit coal, or that . looms were improved, unless Watt and Stevenson had taught them to work! force-pump and power-looms by steam. The great strides were taken within two hundred years. The ‘Life of Sir Robert Peel,’ who died the other day, the model Englishman, very properly has for a frontispiec e a drawing of a spinningjenny which wove the webb of his fortunes. Hargreaves invented the spinning-jenny, and died in a work-house. Arkwright improved the ns and the machine dispensed with the work of ninetynine men—that is, one spinner eould do as much work as one hundred had done before. “The loom was improved further.— But the men would sometimes strike for wages and combine against their masters, and, about 1829-30, much fear was . felt lest the trade would be drawn away by these interruptions, and the emigration of the spinners to Belgium and the United States. Iron and steel are very . ebedient. Whether it were not possible to make a spinner that would not rebel, nor mutter, nor strike for higher wages, nor emigrate. At the solicitation of the masters, after a mob and riot at Staleybridge, Mr. Roberts, of Manchester, undertook to create this peaceable fellow, instead of the quarrelsome fellow God } had made. After a few trials he sueceeded in a ereation, the delight of millowners and destined, they said, ‘to restore order among the industrious classes’—a machine requiring only a child’s hand to piece the broken y yarns. As Arkwright had destroyed domestic spinning, so Roberts destroy ed the factory spinner. The power of machinery in Great Britain in Mills, has been aeeaye: ted to be equal to ex hundred millions . of men; one man able, by the aid of . steam, to do the work which rei juired two handred af fifty men to xecomplish fifty years ago. The production has. been commensurate. . “England already has this laborious } race, rich soil, water, wood, coal, and favorable climate. Eight hundred years ago, commerce had made it rich, and it yas recorded ‘England is the richest of all the northern naticns.”’” The Norman historians recite, that ‘in 1067, William earried with him into Normandy, from England, more gold and silver, than eyer before had been seen in Gaul. But when to this, labor, and trade, and the native resources, was added this goblin of Steam, with his inyriad arms, never tired, working night and day, everlastingly, the amassment of property has run out of all his fingers. It makes the motor of the last ninety years. The steam-pipe has added to her population and wealth the equivalent of four or five Englands. Forty thousand ships are entered on Lloyd’s list. The yield of wheat has gone on from two million quarters at the time of the Stuarts, to Sinnen million in 1854. A thousand million of pounds are said to compose the floating money of commerce. In 1842 Lord John Russell stated that ‘the people of this country have laid out three hundred million pounds sterling of capital, in railways, in the last four . years OuTRAGEous TREATMENT OF A Youne Wire.—Our quiet little town has been thrown into a burst of wild excitement about a domestic affair of an atrocious nature, which transpired in our midst. Mr. , (we withhold his name on account of his friends,) a young gentleman of fortune and family, not long ago led to the altar one of the loveliest of her sex, and up to the time of this most extraordinary act, they appeared to live in the full enjoyment of . eonnubial bliss. The particulars are briefly these: On Thursday morning Jast, Mr. arose at half past six A. mM. He dressed himself with his usual deliberation and taste. Just as his wife was about to robe herself in her daily habiliments, the brutal husband seized her hooded crown skirt and deliberately seating himself upon it, he commenced singing: “I am sitting on the style, Mary,’ > &e. His wife fainted. We understand his lawyers will rely on insanity for his de fense.— Cynth tana t (Ky) Age. . . . i> Passing through a quiet village in the interior, a few days since, a fellow-passenger pointed out a weatherbeaten house of worship, as the place where he once heard, on a rainy oceasion, the following prayer from the staid preacher: “We thank thee, Lord, for the goodly number here to-night, and that Thou are also here, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather.” A Fine Distinctrion.—*“Don't let that quack touch your teeth,” said I, toa friend, as he turned towards the door of a noted dentist, who advertises to cure the toothache without extracting, or to extract them without pain. Come with me, and I will show you an operator whom you can trust.” “Ay,” answered my companion, “but can He trust me?” f=" The report that it was so cold one day last week as to break off a marriage engagemet, by the freezing-up of the young gentleman’ s passion, is doubted by the ladies. The general effect of cold nights is to bring the marriage fever to: a crisis. WILLIAM €. KELLUM. DENTIST. By the of Lacour Concentrated Acid, vinegar can be made for one dollarand sixty cents per barrel. use MAKING LIQUORS, Lacour’s Oils require no re ion—only pour the oil into the Whiskey and shake wetl, The Liquors thus made will have 2e natural aroma, a full, rich, oily taste ; a begutiful transparent color anda fine bead. ‘Lacour’s oils exert three distinct properties in converting common whisky to brandy gin, &e. The first property combines with and subsides in the form of floculent particles the whole of the crain oil, (Amylic Alcohol. ) The Whiskey is thus de prived of that peculiar irritating and burning taste » and becomes ane utr: al spirit ; the second property consists in an oily mucillaginous taste imparted to the liquor, which renders it mellow, and imparts an j appearance of great age ; the third property is exhibited in the rich vinous nutty odor that is impaxted to the liquor, which reuders distinction from the genuine brands impossible. These oils are pt ut upin quart flasks ; each flask contains sufficient oil for making three hundred gallons of liquor, Fuilanl comprehensive directions accompa any the bottles.
