REBELLION IN OHINA.
{From the Friend of China, Jan. 30)
. Under the head Canton, and in other
sartsof this paper, we mention the beeaguerment of the Imperial Commissionir Sue and suite in the south western
yart of the Cuaton Province. Lats
we had an opportunity of conversing with .
» Mandarin bolding the brevet rank of
Yun-tai, an officer of the third class, and
andeavored to obtain from him an opinon as to the truth of the rumor, and
what would be the result should Sue be
saptured That there was such a rewrt he admitted, but he doubted its
nerfect truth. Sue, he said, would cer.
tainly destroy himself rather than be
made a prisoner. Regarding Canton. .
he thought there were too many obstacles in the way of itsbeing renched by
she rebe's; but that there are a great
many dianffected spirits in the city is
well known, who may be biding their
time. Should the rebela indeed come
to Canton, our informant added, the
Emperor's only means of safety would .
be flight to the hills. .
For what has been done by the rebels .
during the month now ending, so far as .
known to us, we refer our readers to the .
compendium of extracts fiom bi-weekly .
issues.
_ Wo have two long papers, translations .
of some of our Chinese correspondence, .
one telling of the taking of the chief)
city of the Chin-kong district of Kwangsi, and a bard fight between the impeialist troops and those of the rebels ; .
nd in which we have the usual report .
f thousands killed, and thousands wounded. The city had been thoroughly ransacked —prisoners released, ete
The other paper tells of the bad con-.
uct of the imperialist soldiery, when
nrowe to the seat of war, and of organ.
heed bodies of them being set upon and}
lispersed by the common pecple.
(From our Correspondents.) }
A court messenger arrived last week,
vith an order frorm the Emperor to raise .
a million teals of silver for payment of
the troops. The officials contributed
400,000 of it without delay, leaving ed
remainder of it to be made up by the
rich families. Meetings have been held .
at Tai fut chie, daily, ever sinco the 26th .
rich people, looked at one another—and
refused to prepare the sum”
the disturbed districts, of which we
made mention in our last isaue. It is
not generally known, wo believe, that
the Chinese Government have offered )
the Superintendent here of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation
Company, largo sums per month for the
services of two sieamers to aid them in
their operations agninst the rebel fleet
on the coast. By the report from Ningpo.
as published in the North China Herald .
of the 20th ult, it will be seen that an}
victory was gained by the pirates, chicfly through treachery.
We have heard that the district cities .
of Woo-heen, on the south, and Chaou.
ying on the east side of Yung-gan-chow, .
in Kwangse, have been taken possession .
of by the rebels, who immediately opened all the graneries and treasuries for
benefit of the people, and remitted all
taxes for the present year.
Wo have received o letter from!
Kwangse, stating that the groat Tartar .
General, Sae-shang-ah received an im-.
perial rescript insisting that the city of .
Yung-gan-chow be agnin brought under!
royal nuthority within the space of fif.
teen days, and that in case of failure.
the General Heang-ying, Lieut. General
Woo-lan-tai and Colonel Ting--am were
tobe beheaded. On tho receipt of this .
news, on the 17th day of the 10th moon, !
ull the officers collected their troops, .
and from various points proceeded to at
tack the city of Yung-gan-chow. The)
rebels, however, pretending to be de~.
feated, gradually led them on to where
they had a large body of troops in am.
bush, and then suddenly turning upon .
them poured forth a complete shower .
of canon balls, killing upwards of 10,000
soldiers und more than 60 officers of yarious ranks, .
It is reported that Seu, the Governor .
General, is at present in the city of Knou-.
chow-foo, and that the rebe!s baveo attacked it on all sides, having erected a.
powerful battery before each of the city)
zates so as to be ready toattack the soldieis whenever they venture to eome
out. The Tartar troops aro afraid to
go outand fight, and have new been be.
seiged for more than ten days. We}
have not yet heard which side has gain.
ed the victory.--F’. of U. Jan 7.
A rebellion has broken out in the}
Sin-on district of this (Canton) province. .
On the 20th day of the 11th moon, the}
officers engaged in collecting the taxes!
\
fuund some who had no meansof paying. .
but instead of seizing these men, they .
took their elder brothers into custody, .
especially the richer cnes, from whom .
they expected to obtain a good deal of
money us ransom, The inhabicants,
howeyer, became enraged and iose and
killed the magistrate of the district.
