B. Astor, has now a “regalar income”
of $3,000 a day, or about $1,000,000 a
year.”
Mr. Wm. B. Astor must be a very
thriftless young man. We well remember that Mr. Fitz Greene Halleck, a
good many years ago, being then chief
clerk of John Jacob Astor, the father
of Wm. b., published a computation by
which he made out the old gentleman’s
income to be a picayune at every beat
of his pulse. Allowing the old man’s
pulse to have beat at the rate of sixty
times a minute, the income must have
been five thousand four hundred dollars
per day. Now, Wm. B. astor was Joh.
Jacob’s sole heir, and, if he has already
reduced the estate nearly one-half. that
is from nearly two millions to one million per year, the young spendthrift may
soon get through with the whole of it
and become a charge upon the corporation. Ought not a guardian to be appointed over him ?—Lox. Journal.
SENSATIONS OF THE Dy1nG.—The
pain of dying must be distinguished from
the pain of the previous disease; for
when life ebbs, sensibility declines —
As death is the final extinction of corporeal feelings, so numbness increases
as death comes on. ‘The prostration of
disease, the healthful fatigue, engenders
a growing stupor—a sensation of subsiding softly into coveted repose. The
transition resembles what may be seen
in those lofty mountains whose sides exhibit every climate in regular gradation;
vegetation luxuriates at their base, and
dwindles in the appronch to the regions
of snow till its feeblest manifestation is
repressed by the cold. The so-called
agony can never be more formidable
than when the brain is the last to go,
and when the mind preserves to the end
of a rational cognizance of the state of
the body. Yet persons thus situated
commonly attest that there are few
things in life less painful than the close.
‘If IT had strength to hold a pen,’ said
William Hunter, ‘I would write how
easy it was to die,’ ‘If this be dying,’
said the niece of Newton Olney, ‘it is a
pleasant thing to die.’ ‘The very expression,’ adds her uncle, ‘ which another friend of mine made use of on her
death bed a few Pipes ago.’ The same A long experience in the business and an earnest desire

Quit Drinking Poisonous Liquors:
Patent Improued Process for Making
All Kinds of Liquors & Vinegar,
INSTANTLY, by the use of
LACOUR’S ESSENTIAL OILS.
These oils are obtained by distillation at the Chemical
Laboratory, Parish of Jefferson, ef Pierre Lacow, author
of Lacour’s Chemical Analyois, Lacour’s Chemical manipulations, Lacour on the Manufacture of Liquors, &c.
Purchasers are particularly requested. to return the
flasks and obtain their money, if the oil does not give
perfect satisfaction.
LACOUR’S OIL OF COGNAC converts neutral spirit
to a superior imitation of Imported Brandies, viz :—
Otard, Sazerac, Marett Cognac, Poultney, Seignette,
United Vineyard Proprietors, Castillion and London
Dock Brandies. These Liquors will have a full fruity
flavor, and a beautiful, sparkling color. Common Rectified Whiskey will be changed by the use of the oil of
Cognac to New York Brandy, Pine Apple Brandy, Uommon Cognac Brandy, &c.
LACOUR’S OIL OF RYE changes Rectified Whisky
to Monongahela Rye Whiskey, Old Virginia Malt Whiskey, Bourbon Whiskey, &c.
OIL OF CEUDRAT changes common Rectified Whiskey toOld Irish Malt Whiskey, and a superior article of
Scotch Whiskey.
OIL OF PEACH changes common Whiskey to Virginia Peach Brandy, &c. Oil of Peach and Oil of Cognac
will convert common Whiskey to Apple Brandy.
RIL OF GIN converts the poorest Whiskey to Hol
land Gin, Schiedam Schnapps, Rose Gin, Swan Gin, English Gin, &c.
LACOUR’S CONCENTRATED ACID will, in five
hours after being mixed, change five gallons of good
Vinegar and twenty-five gallons of water to thirty gallons of the most acid Vinegar that can be found in the
market. By the use of Lacour’s Concentrated Acid,
vinegar can be made for one dollar and sixty cents per
barrel,
FOR MAKING LIQUORS, Lacour’s Oils require no
preparation—only pour the oil into the Whiskey and
shake well. The Liquors thus made will have a fine natural aroma, a full, rich, oily taste ; a beautiful transparent color anda fine bead. Lacour’s oils exert three distinct properties in converting common whisky to brandy
gin, &c. The first property combines with and subsides
in the form of floculent particles the whole of the grain
oil, (Amylic Aleohol.) The Whiskey is thus deprived of
that peculiar irritating and burning taste, and becomes
a neutral spirit ; the second property consists in an oily
mucillaginous taste imparted to the liquor, which renders it mellow, and imparts an appearance of great age ;
the third property is exhibited in the rich vinous nutty
odor that is imparted to the liquor, which reuders distinction from the genuine brands impossible.
These oils are put upin quart flasks ; each flask contains sufficient oil for making three hundred gallons of
liquor, Fulland comprehensive directions accompany
the bottles. Price, $2,00 per bottle,
For sale at the corner of St. Charles and Poydrasstreet

~ ‘Turner’s Ginger Wine.
HE MEDICAL FACULTY throughout the Union
have acknowledged this to be one of the best family
medicines now in use. By chemical process it bas been
proved to possess ALTERATIVE, TONIC AND ANTIDYSPEPTIC properties, superior far to those found in
any other medicinal beverage yet discovered
THE MEDICAL FACULTY ofthe State of New York
prescribe it in almost every case for debility and lassitude,
owing to its soothing effects on the system, and the absence of all injurious minerals, chemicals or acids.
THE TURNER BROTHERS have in their possession
Numerous certificates of its sanitive properties, from the
most eminent medical men in the United States, who have
witnessed its effects on their patients, where it has been
administered in their extensive practice.
It HAS BEEN ANALYZED by the most eminent
chemists of New York city and Buffalo, where the Turner
Brothers manufacture daily thousands of gallons, and so
popular has it become, that they can hardly supply the
demand, even when their stills are kept in operation day
and night.
This Wine is acknowledged at the East to be the BEST
RESTORATIVE NOW IN USE where general prostration of the system exists, or derangement of the functions of the digestiveorgans, as it braces the nerves anew,
recoats the stomach, and creates an appetite when other
tonics have failed.
This EXCELLENT WINE is pleasant to the taste, and
the strictest advocate of temperance cannot discover any
intoxicating quality in it. It is wholly free from all substances that are iujurious to health, but on the contrary
its effects on the system of either invalids or persons in
robust health, are ef the most beneficial description.
Caution to the Public.
‘The reputation awarded to TURNERS’ GINGER WINE,
and the unheard of popularity it has received at the East.
as well as in this State, has been the means of putting in
the market many spurious articles—to guard against
which, Turner Brothers have had engraved on a STEEL
PLATE & splendid new label, which is copyrighted, and
cannot be counterfeited or imitated without an infraction of
the copyright law. This label has a correct portrait of
the Turner Brothers, six in number, and no bottle that
has not this label will contain the genuine Ginger Wine.
Unprincipled men in this city have partially counterfeited the label lately used by the Turner Brothers, and
thereby imposed on many persons.
We caution all consumers of GINGER WINE to examine
the label, as none is genuile save such as have our portraits in a cirele, on a steel plate. surrounding the inserip

to be led away by unnious reports, industriously cireulited by parties isterestel in underrating the valuable
medical qualities of his *‘Schnapps,”’ but to read this no
tice, and then try, and judge f rtheimselves,
3d. The proprietor will detail the means by which he
became possessed of the knowledge the virtues of }
of this preparation, the applicaton of whch has rendered
Schnapps so deservedly famous.
Froin time immemorial good and holy men have retired
from the world and its cares and tumults, and have passed the rest of their days in meditation, study, or the
prac ice of religious duties. Perhaps no occupation has
1 more followed by these recluses, than the culling of
simples, the study of botany, and preparation of herbs
for medicinal purposes, and by no religious order or sect,
has this study been more pursued than by the Carthusian
monks, Whea,in A.D. 503, St. Francis d’ Assis, their
founder, returned from his missionary labors in Africa
and Asi+, he brought with him a profound knowledge of
botany ; on his death bed he ineulcated the study of herbs
on his diciplins, and enjoined it as a part of a monastic
discipline, as a means of alleviating the pains and diseases of suffering humanity, and the result was, the produetion by the monks of the monastery of “La Grange
Chartrense,” (one of the largest and most important institutions in France) of the world renowned Cordial that
bears their name. ‘‘Chartrense,” composed entirely of
flowers and aromatic herbs of medicinal qualities.
An ancestor of the present proprieter was the superior of this religious order—by him the secret of the preparation was transmitted to his descendants It has
remained in the family, handed downfrom father to son,
and now for the first time applied to
Barbier’s Aromatie Scheidam Schnapps
And it is the judicious admixture of Chartreuse with
the medical property of Scheidam Schnapps that renders
Barbier’s preparation so eminently qualified to take the
lead of all other Schnapps—already favorably received.
It possesses all the virtues of Chartreuse, grafted on
the previously acknowledged beneficial qualities of
Schnapps.
The public will thus preceive that this is no new pre4.
paration, no piratical imitation of any other so called
**Schnapps,’’ ephemeral in its nature, and deleterious
in its effects; but a precious discovery, the resnit of
years of study and experiment, appreciated by the,
whole medical faculty of France, to be found in the mansion of the noble and the hut of the peasant, nourishing
childhood and sustaining the feeble limbs of old age,
shedding its blessings alike upon all, like charity, and
a fit monument of the good man who first sent into the
world, and it Is this that renders Barbier’s Schnapps
suderlatively tonic, diuretic, anti-dyspeptic, and invigorating, grateful to the palate, and good forthe system,
and the undersigned alone possesses the secret of this
compound, and he or his agents alone can sell,

A CARD.
PROMPTED by an honest desire of my heart, I wish to.
lay before the public a case which deserves a light com
mendation, not only as an act of scientific skill, but that
of humanity, also. About two years ago, I suddenly and
from causes unknown to me, was seiZed with a fit of Epi
lepsy, which owing to my inabilitto meet the expenses
consequent upon a thorough medical treatment, and the
discouragement which I met with on attempting it, soon
bebome such (as I was then led to believe,) as to defy the
skill of a physician. I was frequently, while in pursnit o
my calling, thrown down to the ground without the slight
est warning, and although insensible to the agonies, I yet
despised the miseries of my life, and soon learned to look
npon those who would render me assistance or shelter me
from dauger as enemies who sought to prolong the misery
of my existence. While in this State, and haviug prc.
vious to my afflictions tasted the sweets of life, I once
more was induced to attempt seeking aid of a physician,
and, by recommendation, called on Dr. L. J. Czapkay, 1
told him my cireumstances, and my inability to reward
him for his services—regardless of which, however, he at
once undertook my case, and with the blessing of God, I
was once more restored to perfect health. Unable to reward him for the boon which I enjoy at present, and ye.
conscious of my indebtedness, I consider it due to myself
and to allafflicted, to make the case public, in order that
those in need of medicvl advice may find a physician in
whom every coufidence can be placed.
