i as “hap ee tee A ParattreL Case.—As additional Interesting Correspondence, proof that we are right in asserting that . (In which we discover a Black Repubthe great Democratic party—of which we now claim to bea zealous though hufiible member—is in favour of the renewal of the foreign slave trade, we point to the uniform position of that party on the tariff question, Democrats have always byen opposed to a high protective tariff, because, they say, it is unjust to compel the consumers of manufactured goods to pay a large price to northern manufacturers, when the same goods could be boughtin Europe at a much lower rate if it were not for the duties of our custom houses. This they say, is legislating for one portion of the Yeountry at the expense of the other. (It is true the Whigs used to show by Very troublesome arguments and facts that protective tariffs benefitted all classesin the community; but we do not know how to answer them any better than they have been answered, and thetefore we won’t talk about that matter at present ) Now, then the laws forbidding the foreign slave trade is nothing more nor less, in effect than a tariff upon imported negrves 30 high as to amount to a prohibition. It is intended to protect the producers and manufacturers of do~ ™estic negroes, and it works manifest in justice tothe negro consumers of the xtreme southern and south western states. If it is wrong to us to buy broad cloth in England at eight dollars per yard, when we could get the same article in France for four dollars is it not also wrong and unjust to compel us to pay one thousand dollars per head tor negroes in Virginia, when we could buy them in Africa for Show us the difcompel New one hundred dollars ! ference ! THR coLp sHouLDER-— While the op~ position and independent papers throughout the state have extensively noticed our accessiou to the ranks of the true democracy, our brothers of the Lecompton press have not deigned to say a word about it. If we were very sensitive this treatment by those who should have kindly welcomed us, would make us‘feel bad ;” but we are hardened against incivility, and wedon’t intend tobe cold shouldered out of the full performance of our duty in any such a manner. We intend to advocate Lecomptonism in ‘our ewn way” just as long as we see proper, whether they choose to recognise us or not. = Some of our opponents ask, what has Gwin ever done for the State during his long term of office, that he should . now goabout bragging of his services and claiming the gratitude of the peo-j. We answer that Gwin’s masquerple. ade ballat Washington was the most distinguished affair of the season, and could not fail to direct all eyes to the . State that sent a Senator to Washington to ably represent its iastes and character. What red—shirted miner but feels his heart leap at thuse magic words “costume obligatory.” All the glory to Point affairs, Pacific &e. that achievement of our senior Senator. be won in Lime steamship agencies, fades before It is true such a fandango was forbidden . by the police of New York in that city, and ismore common tothe atmosphere of Paris than Ameriea; but Dr. Gwin rises above such silly prejudices, and by . . } a touch of his own peculiar genius ex~ hibits a California Senator in the role of a dancing master. IMPUDENCE Uneasatevise.—The. mass of our party cannot even imagine the effrontery of the Black Republican Nigger Worshippers and Broderick half. breeds. We stopped yesterday at a corner where a_ group of those rarmints weve discussing politics, and we as we always do “put in our spoon” for our side with a vin—“Mister” said a dogoned half-breed, “what is your principles?” We in all the characteristic frankness ot the true Lecompten, Gwin, Latham party, answered we were fighting for three great national cardinal principles of the Admi nistration.— “What's them ?” says another mean looking sneak of a Broderickite. 1st— says we, we want and will have niggers, niggers at the sluice box, niggers at the work-bench, niggers in the corn-field, and niggers inthe kitchea, nigger a heap. Well says he, what next. Why next says we “hurrah forold Buck.” Well, what more. Why, next. next, next, says we, a few more niggers from Africa. Dont’t you think an infernal cuss of a Black Republican impudently inquired if our creed did not coustitute us a Buck-Nigger party. Atthat we riled all-firedly. When our editor comes home, we bet he'll lick the first Black and half breed he meets worse nor you ever sot eyes on. Similar —A celebrated convict once described to us how he felt, immediateiy after the commission of his first felony; and some how or other his account of it was a very accurate description of the feelings which we have experienced since the publication of our last issue. Test of Capacity.—lf any honest man who is troubled with an overweening sense of his mental calibre, would liketo test bis thinking apparatus, just let him edit a Lecompton paper for two weeks, andif Le don’t “weaken on the furn,” then we don’t “know a hawk from a. the first class saloons such as we adhand-saw.” . a breeder of disseutions. . posed to be insensitle te misery, or who . while Piussia is only tem-fooling in . stand what we want done with the *cus~ lican Abolitionist, and use him ecom~ pletely up.) [Confidential.] Messrs Suss—Iam astaunch sup porter of our noble President and his policy and delight tosee the Regular Democratic colors floating at your mast head. It gives me an assurance that our cause isjust. Your arguments in the last JouRNaL make my assurance doubly sure onthat point. But while 1 ama Democrat [hope to be able to show that [ ama consistent one, and able to give a reason for the faith that is in me. Privately Lam in want of a conscientious reply to the dozens of pestiferous enemies ofour glorieus party who dog me to death about the course of the administration on the naturalization question. Now, what shall I say to them? When Cass declared esseutially in his Le Clere letter that a natural. ized American to be safe and protected by his government must stay at home, I with Judge Botts, and other lawyers of our party stoutly maintained that Uass reiterated nothing butthe real law of nations on the point, On the heels ofa month’s defense of the position of the adminis‘ration on the question, we learn by alate mail that the President demands naturalized Americans impressed in the armies of Prussia, which seems to be an abandonment a: first blush of the position taken by thatold veteran of our party, Gen. Cass in the Le Clerc letter. Now, I have everyz confidence that there is consistency in the course pursued by the administration in both cases, but, pray inform me how I am to make it out to these inquisitive tormentors of mine. Preuss Deutschasbedamdt. We smell a rat—he is brewing in. the storm—we nip him in the bud. The writer of the above is adem Black Re-~ publican abolitionist. Jle is an enemy of our noble President, in disguise. We give the alarm that alltrue Democrats may be on their guard, If there is a vice we utterly detest it is insincerity or hypocrisy, Deutchasberdamdt is a hypocrite—a wolf in sheep's clothing— He would distract our party and wreck the Union We know him to be an enemy. Who ever heard of a Democrat of the regular stripe talk of conscience and consistency. They are not found in the creed of the party. As loyal administration Democrats we abandon them—we repudiate the abominabie and troublesome evils. Deutschasbedamdt is a jackass as well as anenemy. Were hea regular Democrat he might derive consolation in his misery from Brother Betts, a cvlalorer of ours in the great Democratic cause. Dentschasbedamdt ought to know that Brother Botts, as in duty bound, supported the Cass-Le Clere doctrines in able disquisitions on internationallaw. Now, that the administration hasresolved to take another tack vho that knows Brother Botts’ Democracy doubts that he will be found side by side with the President? Who doubts the ability of his pen to defend any position our administration may take. He is’nt troubled with conscientious qualms about consisteney. We point to him as a model Dembdcrat—a being who is supgrins and bears it with Democratic fortitude and resignation, tike a Stoic In the same confidential manner as Deutschasbedamdt writes us we confess that the seeming inharmony of the Ad. ministration on the naturalization question bothered our heads for a moment, but when we came to considerthat Le Clere wasa Frenchman and France is vetually engaged inthe killing business bloodless parades, we as Know Nothings were perfectly delighted. Where there is a prospect for a French-Ameri-~ can being of service to stop a bullet we are glad to let him be useful. Let him receive honorable wounds and the more the better; but if Prussia can’t take the hint and put Dutch-Americans where they may see bloody sights we must makea demand fer them. which is as good as akick to help Prussia to under~ sed furiners.” Just let her march them down to Italy and our venerable Presix dent will make no more fuss about them, and Brother Botts’ views of international law are all correct. The best way however isto meet the eavilings of our opponents with stolid indifference. Pracues.—Dr. Chapman left at our office on yesterday several fine large peaches, rai~ed on his ranch at Rush creek, and the first ripe ones raised in the mountainsthis season Their flavor is much necher than those breugaot from below. There is something in the soil or air of the mountains that develope the peach in full perfection. Wheu the Dr. gets Lis fine ranch in full operation he will have no difficulty in commanding higher prices for his products than can be had for the insipid and dropsical productions of the lower vallies. ApoLoGetic.—We ask the pardon of many advertising patrons for the pon appearance of their business notices this week. The press of original matter owing to our having entered upon a new and inexhaustible political field is our apol. gy. Girt ENTERTAINMENT-—Pete Oppenheim of Orleans Flat presents unnusual attractions in the way of a Gift Entertainment. A glance at his schedule will reveal the munificence of his Gifts, ee STARTLING IF TRUE.—The San Fran~ cisco National thinks that because we haye put on the“livery” of Lecomptonism we are going to “serve the Devil.” Wonder if we can’t be Lecompton without serving the Devil? The National ought to know, _SaLoons.—We notice the advertisements of the Metropolitan and Union saloons in another piace. If men will drink, and wish to avoid “tarantula juice,” “‘instanter,” “forty rod” or “minnie rifle,” we recommend them to visit . Vertise. = We have little doubt that a num~ber of frightful casualties and striking incidents have occured in this region the past two weeks; but we have been too much absorbed in the interests of the Democratic party to notice them. EDITOR'S CORNER. AEE We hear withinfinite regret that Brigadier General Philip Moore and other substantial business men of this vicinity are badly offended ut the course our subs have maliciously pursued towards “our venerable President” and his party. during our absence, We would be sorry to lose the good will of any staunch tax-paying, paper-paying, citizen, and would ask the young Brigadier to miti gate his wrath and use his influence with other of our business mea in our behalf. Itis suggested that General Moore was drunk when he denounced the JourRNAL. If sowe appea! from Philip drunk to Philip sober.” A basladiablerie.—We returned to our post too late this week to prevent another broadside of devilment from the subs, but we promise to down with the Lecompton colors and endeavor to make our columns respectable again as soon as possible. The devils about the office have laid aside our interesting letters from abroad to give place to their insincere praises of Lecomptonism, and in order to give our artist, they say. time for farther illustra-. tions. “The devil is to pay” every time we leave the office, and that in a literal sense is the worst part of the sport. ITCH FOR OFFICK. —T aking advantage of our absence from the county, that inveterate office seeker and arrant demagogue, Geo, A. Young, has announced himself as an independent candidate for County clerk. Not satisfied by a rejection by a convention ef lis own party in which all his abilities were exhausted in trying to get anomination, he now comes out to defeat the nominee of that party, and get the best office in the county if possible. Heis one of the Democrats who pride themselves in being in “the orgauization.” As he is G. A. Young’s candidate, and not recommended by any party, white or black, we shal: take time before election to examine the claims of this self sufficient individual, and may discourse of certain road matters.
