Under Which King. —The old Know
Nothing organ, the Nevada Journal, havine exhansted the vials of its wrath on
the ‘d d furriners,’ the Kansas
Nebraska bill, and Judge Douglas, and
everything in the calendar of Democraey, has suddenly become enamored of
the Broderick school, and has taken to
hosannas to King David. It is almost
as ardent in detending Broderick as it
was in defending the Vigilance Committee. Itis almost as obsequious to
our fereign born citizens now, as it once
was assiduous in denouncing them as
traitors and emissaries of the Pope. It
ie marvelously taken with popular sovereignty and the Cincinnati platform,
though it has heretofore visited both with
ite pious anathemas. The pronoun =~
was scarcely more frequent in the
tpeechesof ‘Thomas H. Benton than the
name of the traitor Arnold, applied to
Judge Douglas. But now ABah is the
name of Douglas, and verily Waite is
Lis prophet. The political gymnastics
of this neophyte mudsill, outdoesall the
antics of Harlequin.— National.
Why, George, you-ought to be ashamed of yourself. Even you are not so
’ despicably ignorant not to know that we
hold both the doctrine of popular sovereignty as well as yourself in contempt.
We have never uttered anything complimentary of both of ye, and probably
never will.
In reference to the application of “Arnold” to the name of Douglas, we happen to have cautiously avoided the term.

ie’ Twas at the close of a glorious
summer day—the sun was setting behind a distant her-roost—the bullfrogs
were warbling their evening songs, and
the wiggle-waggles in their native puddles, were preparing themselves for the
shades of night, and Calanthe and myself sat upon an antiquated back-log
listening to the music of nature, wafted
to our ears by the gentle zephyrs that

came heavy laden with the delicious
fragrance of hen-roosts and pig-styes.—
The last lingering rays of the setting

a solitary horseman, shone through a
chink in the hog pen full in Calanthe’s
face, dying her hair a mustard Lue, and
showing off my thread-bare coat to bad
advantage. One of my arms was
around Calanthe’s waist, and she was
toying with my orange-colored whiskers.
She looked like a mud turtle choking
with the hiccups, and I felt like a treed
wood-chuck. ‘“Calanthe,” said I, in a
voice musical as the notes of a dying
swan, “will you have me?” She turned
her eyes heavenward, clasped me by the
hand, had an attack of the blind staggers, and with a sigh that drew her shoestrings to her palate, said “Yes!” She
gave clean out then—she cork-screw ed,
and I corfumixed and rolled in it. I

this is all we can publish of this exeeedingly interesting romance.—Z£z.
Tue Cootest Yet.— A good anecdote is told of aman named Bently, a
most confirmed drinker, who would
never drink with a friend or in public,
and always bitterly denied, when a little too steep, ever tasting liquor. One
day some bad witnesses had concealed
themselves in his room, and when the
liquor was running down his throat,
seized him with his arm crooked and
his mouth open, and holding him fast,
asked him with an air of triumph, “Ah,
Bently, have we caught youat last ?—
You never drink, ha!” Now one
would have supposed that Bently would
have acknowledged the corn. Not he;
with the most grave and inexpressible
face, he calmly, and in a dignified manner, said, “Gentlemen, my name is not
Bently !”
AGRICULTURAL Fair Mepats.—The
officers of the State Agricultural Society, determined to exercise the utmost
liberality in the bestewment of awards,
have employed the celebrated jeweler,
John W. Tucker, of San Francisco, to
execute the gold and silver medals and
other artieles of dijouterte which a:e to
form a portion of the prizes. ‘The local
editor of the A/ta California has examined the workmanship on these medals,
so far as it has progressed, and pronoun
ces it masterly. ‘here are nine medals
ot pure gold—twenty-two carats fine—
three of them weighing, each three
ounces; three, two ounces, and three,
one ounce. On one side is a wreath
encircling a blank, for the name of the
recipient, and around near the rim the
insexiption—“Awarded by the State
Agricultural Society.”” On the reverse
is a design, by Nahl, emblematic of agriculture, mining, and other branches of
Califorma industry. Next, are two
hundred and twenty-tive silver medals,
their size corresponding with the gold,
and struck from the same dies. ‘hen
there are seventy heavy goblets of pure
silver, richly wrought, and bearing be. sides the State coat of arms and various
appropriate inseriptions and figures.—
‘Fhere are also twenty-two dozen heavy
silver spoons; silver cake knives; silver
fruit knives and other silver ware—the
whole valued at $6,000. These awards
are all very handsome, and entitle the
maker, as well as the Society to much
credit — Marysville News.
Suir For SLaANDER.— A _ suit
commenced, yesterday, in the District
Court of Sacramento, by Jesse Elder,
late Postmaster of that city, against L.
C. Chandler, W. H. Tobey, F. S.
Thompson; L. P. Davis, James McClatchey and 8.J. May. The four first
named defendants are proprietors and
the two last named are editors of the
Daily Bee. The complaint sets forth
that on the 23d day of July last they
published a malicious and slanderous
article, in said paper, to injure his fair
name and reputation. Damages in the
amount of $26,0@0-are claimed for the
injury dune thereby.

JrssteBrown.—Every body has read
the beautiful sketch of “Jessie Brown,
or the Relief of Lucknow,” in which
her first consciousness of the approach
of the Highlanders, with their bagpipes,
is so finely delineated. A correspondent of the London Times spoils the
whole stery, as far as facts are concerned, by stating that it was known at
Lucknow that help was approaching
when the troops were seven miles off,
and that there was not a female in
Lucknow that could possibly correspond
with the character with Jessie. ‘The
author of the sketch deserves eredit,
for his ot her genius.

Wistar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry. I was, at the time
commenced using it, laboring with every symptom ol

bottle, it gave me relief, and as I considered my case a

was well. I must say, that it appeared to reach the
very place affected, in which all other medicines failed.

if not dead.
