Gold Cities by Jim Morley and Doris Foley (1965) (104 pages)
"This book is an attempt to portray the fascinating past of Grass Valley and Nevada City mainly through scenes that still exist today [1965], together with stories about those scenes. In a larger sense it is a last long look at a life and time now vanishing." (Page 3).
Gold Cities: Grass Valley and Nevada City (Berkeley: Howell-North Books, 1965) consists of artistically composed photographs by Jim Morley (1922-2003) and captivating narratives by Doris Foley (1910-1982), then the president of the Nevada County Historical Society, later the namesake of the Doris Foley Library for Historical Research. Decades later, their collaboration has become the most valuable record of the twin cities on the eve of the construction, from 1965 to 1969, of the Golden Center Freeway, which by-passed the towns and forever changed their economies. Particularly dramatic is the contrast between the photo on the back cover, looking down on lower Main street in Nevada City before the construction, and the artist's conception of the freeway (page 96), which claws through the first blocks of Broad and Main streets, leaving only the South Yuba Canal Building and Ott's Assay Office.
