NEW CAREERS
June 1848—October 1849
Fess Ro re left San Francisco with Ed Kemble and John
Yates on June 14, 1848. The trio disembarked from the old
whaleboat a week later at Sutter’s embarcadero on the Sacramento River.
At the fort, they went first to Sam Brannan’s store to tell him what they
had done. Kemble was somewhat apprehensive, but Sam wasn’t surprised to hear they had stopped publishing the Star to go to the mines.
“But I’ll tell you one thing, boys,” he said. ‘““Don’t waste your time on
the American River.”
They all stared at him in amazement.
“But Sam,” said Tallman. “‘Isn’t that where all the gold mines are?”
“The early ones, yes—but it’s so overcrowded along the river that
there’s not nearly enough room for everyone who’s come. There are too
many miners and not enough space!”
“Where would you suggest we go?”
“North. North to the Yuba and Feather rivers. I hear there’s just as
