On the evening of the 27th ult (October) there appeared one of the most beautiful and remarkable aurora borealis ever witnessed in this latitude. Shortly after 7 o’clock, P. M. the northern sky was spanned with arches of pale green quivering light, traversed with numerous rays of the most brilliant red and purple colors, extending far over the heavens. ‘The motions of these luminous rays were exceediugly rapid and gracetul, well meriting the name of “merry dancers,” applied tothem by the natives of northern Europe. We have not witnessed such a splendid aurona since the month of January, 1838. During the week referred to, the northern lights appeared with different degrees of brillianey every night, and in conjunction with these, the tides rese several feet higher on two successive days than had been the case for several years. This took place several days after full moon, and at a period when very high tides are unusual. What could have been the cause of these wonderful natural phenomena? To the Citizens of Nevada County: The Grand Jury at its recent se proper in their report to ve sion have thought present “te their fellow citizens of Nevada County” that my conduct as County Treastrer bus been corrupt and criminal. Had that tribunal confined itself to a discharge of its lawful duty by delivering to the proper Court an indictment or presentment charging me with a public offense or offenses, I would have respected its members as worthy citizens and fellow men, and in silence assumed at once the grave task of meeting charges so made in acedrdance with ruies of law and gentlemanly propriety. But the Grand Jury through the super-officious zeal and industrious malice of a few of its members have not oniy transcended therequirements of official duty, but the plainest rules of justice and moral proprieiy porting to the publie “as Facts,” thefr own imere conclusions, ignorantly jumped at upon a pa and prejudiced ivenstigation. Did not the Jury know this report would be prblisi not the hypocritical maliener who dr: its publication, when he addresses in fellow citizens of Nevada County?” Grand 1? Did it design “his hetanding it was inten { [could be tried upon a single eharge preferred, that report prefaces the serics of! hoods, i to be given to th “lct~ stupidities and corrupt mis-sia‘ements it contains against me, with the remark “we respectfully report As Facts which various witnesses HAVE SUBSTANTIATED under oath.” I intend to establish the falsity of this report in this respect upon my trial, but suppose they have reported the facts and evidence ? When, or on what occasion, or on what charge by any former or by this Grand Jury made, did such a tribunal descend to the unfair and despicable measure of reporting to the public the eircumstances, testimony and facts of a charge before atrial can be had? They say in their report they found two indictments against others, besides the presenfiaentagainst myself. These in¢;ctments are and manslaughter, but serious as those CRIMES are, not a line, nor pars for mur: h, nora moing “to their felw citizens of Nevada county” the facts and circumstances of those cases, . . ment’s labor was bestowed in show They filed their presentagainst me indueform for"a MISDESEANOR. Why in addition haye they resorted to “the aaprecedented course of officially and beforehand belying Iny case, if it isnot tomake me unable to find, if possible, none of my fellow-men unprejudiced when they are called upon, as they must be, to try and decide its issues? I submit to every good man, if the report is not desigued to prejudice my rights as an accused party—to cause the pubhe to condemn me before a hearing—to deny tome that impartia}. ity guaranteed to the lowest felon, and to encourage unfeeling and villainous attacks from snarling and jay-hawking newspaper presses tolerated in this State to its lasting disgrace. ment” Its authorship is well known io myself and others to belong to an unprincipled and shameless trickster, whose appetite for spleen, meanness and revenge is as insatiable as . that of a hyena for carion and filth. I am reluc. tant to believe that many of the members of that . Grand Jury considerately gave their sanction to e report so full of falschoods, silliness and meanness. They were inveigled into signing it by the hypoerisy and false representations of one who procured for himself that position’ to assail and injure me, backed as he was by pettifogging industry never bean occasion. To show tho . public how ridiciously false and absurd is this report towards myself, I will quote from it the followimg, viz :— fore witnessed on such “Sth. The Treasurer has i collected monies from part ed AGAIN THE sau] ey on THE same license ssued licenses to and ; sin Grass Valley and icense to and collected monfrom parties in Nevada.” Ts not this a self-evident and silly falechood 7— low I as Treasurer regaine: } pvssession of licenses and the capital wf the eompany which . 1 284 once issued in Grass Valley so that THE sium it is proposed te form is $400,000. mecting was convened at the Merchants’ . Exchange to bear the project explained in detail by Mr. Gisborne. : . Bis i An amusing incident occurred in Vermont several years sinee, the subject being Ephraim Maxwell, well known throughout the State, as the editor ofa popular religious newspaper, and an old bachelor, withal. One day Eptraim got married, and as is the custom, we believe, everybody went to the village church the Sunday following to see the bride and groom. The minister arose in his pulpit and announced for his text: “Ephraim is joined to his idols, let him alone,” and just at that minute Mr. Maxwell passed down the aisle to his seat, amid the titer and smiles of the coagregation, ADVERTISING.—Stephen Girard says “I have always considered advertising, liberally and long, to be the great medium of success in business and prelude to wealth. And I have made it an intoo, to advertise in the lullest tines, long experience having taught me that money thus spent is well laid out; as by keeping my business continually before the public, it has se. cured ne many sales that I would otherwise have lost.” Tue Lorv’s Taste.—lIn illustration of the controversy that has arisen concerning Henry Ward Beecher’s liberal stvle of invitation to the communion, the anecdote is quoted of an Knglish Judge, who, on being refused the bread and the cup, because he was not a member of the dispens'ng church, quietly remarked; *Oh! T beg your pardon, I thought this the Lord’s table: I have nothing more to say, if it is only a privaie little supper of yonr own !” “Don’t all speak at once,” as the instructor said to his deaf and dumb pupils. “A light breaks upon my brain,” as the bull said when the butcher’s axe hit him. “T hope [ have’nt hurt your feelings,” as the raisin-seed said to the hollow tooth. The Syracuse Journal gives us an infallible remedy for the gout—“Board with a printer” “T’ll be hanged if I do,” as the criminal said when the sheriff told him to step upon the gallows. In « convention of females, whatever is voted upon is always passed by a handsome majority. ora eRe =‘% could have been issued to other parties in Nevada is @ yvestion that considerate Grand Jury seemed neyer to have thought of. The single cireumstance that a licettse was proineed before them ou which the name of Charles R. Eeiwards had been by one of my Deputies through mistake entored, hen erased, which Edwards never for, and which was afterwards and for the first time issuzp t?\D, Ellard Beans & Co., constituted the sole fonadation of this) senseless and false assertion, 2 . paid a do Edward's business did not justify him in ‘cking such a license, while Beans & Co's did. This license was filled, up as far as the name, for Edwards, but neyer-issued to him, nor to any one but Beans & Co., whose names were inserted in the same when issued or delivered to them. This will be understood when I make known, that these licenses are PRINTED and are of different classes, 9th, 10th, &e. This simple occurrence is the mare's nest which exeite . the suspicion and alarm of this and faithful body takes and omiss most astute d doubtless like slight misneiuce. the other charges con f this Grand Jury—-« secret inquisition—a relie of barbarism, which in these modern days is too often made the means of concealment for personal malice or craven revetige, and a lever to oppress, malign and intained in the rc and one-sided jure. I cantot now with justice to myself enter upon my defence by explaining my whole course as County Treasurer. Ihave near relatives who surTheir unsullied reputations are as dear to meas my own. Both in this matter are at stake. I believe I live still among men—among civilized men—that Courts of Justice are designed to acquit the innocent as well as to convict and punish the guilty. Before these tribunals I now promise to establish the iruth and justice of my statements. I will simply ask my fellow citizens to await the re" vive. sult ofa fair judicial investigation. T. W.
