. WELL SPOKEN,
It is now evident that the election of
Mr. Buchanan is a moral defeat. It is
equally evident that the war between
the North and the South did not end on
the 4th of November 1856. It rather
had a new beginning then, and will certainly mot end before 1860. We are
perfectly satisfied that the triumph, as
it is termed, of the democratic party, is
the mere success of forces, and not the
definite vindication of principle—a simple respite for the present, without any
security for the future.—N. O. Delta.
If this is true, as the great Southern
Democratic organ says it is, we ask, with
our able friend of the Memphis Enguirer
what has the late great war of the people amounted to? If there were dangers besetting the Union, and the success of Mr. Buchanan was not to remove
them and inaugurate a new era—an
era of peace—why was he elected at
all? Why did the Southern friends of
the Union vote for him? What has
been accomplished ? We are told, nothing. Nothing! Is that the mouse that
sprung from the laboring mountain? Is
a postponement of disunion the boon for
which the people so hotly contended during the past summer? We were told to
votefor Brchanan to defeat Fremont ?
Because he was a sectional candidate 1
But now appears according to Buchanan’s own friends, that his election is regarded as settling nothing, but that the
sectional battle is only deferred for four
years. Why did not his friends tell the
country so before the election? The
Americans were battling for the Union
forever, Their success would have
strengthened it. But that did not suit
the plans of the sectionalists of the South
They live by exeitement—breathe it,
eat it, plunge, swim in it.
And so, the discontented spirits of the
sections are again sounding their rallying bugles for 1860. 1860! who can
traverse the time-plain that stretches
betwixt this good day and that unknown
“stand-point” iu human history? It is
clear though that the factions will employ the interim in preparation. No
compromise can be effected. Both are
committed to the doctrine of “no more
compromises,” Buchanan’s administration, it seems, is to be only a lull—an
armistice—at the end of which the hosts
of opposition are to concentrate their accumulated energies, reform their squadrons, and rush together again. Did we
not tell the people that such would be
theresult of Democratic success ? Meanwhile, the duty ofthe Americans is plain.
‘They must go for the whole Union, and
make the labor of their lives—embark
in it their “lives, their liberty, and their
sacred honor.” Let us yet convince the
people that we are the only true Union
party. All others are treacherous and
hollow. We, too, have something to do
in the coming four years. Let us set
about it, one and all. Let us repair the
damage as fast as it is done tothe Union.
As fast as the sectionalists dig away its
foundations, let us stand by to replace
them.— Louisville Journal.
Gen. Jackson’s veto of the Maysville
road bill was not less essential to the
protection of the treasury and the extinction of the first public debt than the
vetoes by which President Pierce arrested the general system’ of internal improvements were to the second emancipation of the nation from debt, which he
has substantially achieved — Nashville
Union and American.
In lauding the internal improvement
vetoes of General Pierce, the organ of
the Tennessee Democracy strikes a hard
blow at the Democratic United States
Senators who passed some of these internal improvement bills over the President’s head. The position of the leaders of the Democracy upon almost every
public measure are so ridiculously inconsistent and at variance that it is impossible to applaud the conduct of one without condemning that of others.—Ezchange.
Ee We were yesterday credibly informed, by a gentleman who resides
near the spot, that in September last the
peean tree, under which the remains of
General Packenham were buried, a few
miles below this city, was broken off,
thirty feet above the ground, by.a gale
of wind, and a cannon ball, fired from
the British lines during the battle, was
found embedded just where the trunk
broke off. Thus it was that the brave
Briton slept under one of his own missiles as his monument !—WN. O. Pic.

k= In England, says one of the London Quarterlies, the upper classes keep
Sunday much as a Christian holiday.
In the country they read the paper and
dress leisurely, go to church, lunch,
stroll about their grounds, look at their
horses and dogs, dine quietly, havea
little sacred music, which sends them to
sleep, read a sermon to their servants
and go to bed. In London, the day is
passed much to the same except the
claims of society are 4 little more attended to. The misfortune of the poor in
large towns is, not that they have substituted the Old Testatment for the New
but that they know no more of either
Testament than they do of the Koran.
To get shaved, have hot meat for dinner, to go to afternoon church in a clean

A BRIGHT STREAK OF GRATITUDE.—The following letter appeared some months since in the San Francisco Citizen without the knowledge of Dr. Young. We copy
itas a complimentary tribute toone of the most skillful
physicians that ever made this state his residence. As it
was entirely unsolicited, and made public without the
knowledge of any one but the writer, it speaks volumes.
It should be cut out and pinned up for reference to any one
who should unfortunately be similiarly situated :
“To my afflicted Fellow Men.”"—Being about to leave
the State of california for my home in Michigan,I wish before leaving to recommend to your notice that great benefactor Dr. J.C. Young. Iwas on the very brink of the
grave, when he stretched forth his hand and saved me from
death. For several years I had been troubled with a complication of diseases brought on ——— habits, aggravated"
by exposure in the mines, which so weakened my system and my constitution that I have often contemplated suicide. Borne down by racking pains in my
body, dizziness in my head, sore eyes, pains and misery in
my back and hips, weariness in my legs, evil forebodings,
together with a confirmed melancholy, I considered m
best friends my worst enemies, my dreams were frightful,
and at times strange phantasies took complete possession
of te Soe I was fast hurrying to insanity—that worst

ing business approached me on the subject and advised me
to go to the Bay and see Dr Young, did so, and thank God
forit. Dr Young examined my case, and told me he could
cure me. Shortly after I commenced taking his medicines
my troubles began to decrease, and in three months I was
perfectly well. Take my advice all you that are afflicted

SACRAMENTO, May 15, 1856.
Dear Sir : Such is the thankfulness I feel for the preservation of my health of both and mind, and I believe of my life, that I hope I wilf-not be considered intrusive in tendering my thankful acknowledgments for
restorihg me to health and making my life a boon worth
preserving, when it had become a burthen too great for
me to bear, Victim as I was to vice that had underminded my constitution, and developed a train of uervous
symptoms, such as nervous debility, headache, distressing timidity, self-distrust, dizziness, love of solitude, loss
of strength and energy, which had made my waking moments wretched and my sleep unrefreshing and was fast
bringing me to the grave ; but thanks to your skill ] am
restored to health, vigor and energy. Hoping to guide
others where they may find relief, you have my permission to make this public.
Gratefully yours, L. WuHITr.
MARYSVILLE, June 3, 1855.
Dr. L. J. Czapkay—Sir : I have used the last of your .
medicine, and do not think I shall need any more as I feel
very well, except thatI have not entirely got my strength
yet, but soon will with the appetite I have. It is just
three weeks, you may recollect, since I ealled at your Institute, with my constitution as I thought, entirely broken, and never thought you would be able to cure me
perfectly, but thought you might be able to do something
to ease the pain in my back and head and strengthen
my limbs, which were so weak that they would almd:t
give way under me when I walked, and to strengthen
my nerves so that I would not get excited and tremble at
every little thing. Now that yo know what I expected,
you may judge of my satisfaction at my complete recovery from those symptoms, and the removal of those
pst A and sores from my skin and the ulcers from m:
throat ; and the entire stoppage of those emissions which
you said were principally the cause of my sickness. I
can hardly tell you which is the greatest, my joy or my
surprise, for except not having fully got my strength, I
feel as well as any man can feel.
Enclosed I send you twenty dollars over your charge,
and think myself cheaply cured. If you think anybody
will be benefitted, you may put this letter in all the

ordinary success in the treatment of Syphilitic and Gonorrheal diseases in the primary and other stages, induces
him to call public attention to the fact that of the great
numbers who have made daily application to him, there
is not one who has not been effectually and permanently
cured. In recent cases of Syphilis or Gonorrhea, the
Dr. guarantees a perfect cure in a few days without hindrance to business, or other inconvenience. The Dr.'s
method of treatment of these maladies, combines the improvements made by the medical faculty, with discoveries of his own that are unknown to any one else, and
which, when applied, prevent the possibility of evil after
consoquences.
Secondary Syphilis, which is so destructive of health
producing ulcerations of the throat, destroying the soft
parts, and leaving the bones exposed, which mortify,
separate, and come away, disfiguring the sufferer most
horribiy, as well as impairing his general health, and predisposing to consumption, the Dr. treats in the most certain and efficient manner. Also Buboes, painful swellings upon the bones, disfiguring splotches on the skin,
sores, pimples and all other consequences of Syphilitic
or Gonorrheeal diseases he guarantees to cure, or asks
no compensation.
The Dr. would especially call the attention of those
who have failed to obtain relief from others, many of
whom he has already cured, and many are still under
treatment. The Dr. makes no charge for consultation,
and invites all to call at his Institute, and he will give
them such satisfaction they can obtain nowhere else.—
Those at a distance, by writing to the Dr. can have their
cases promptly attended to.

BARBIER’S MEDICATED
Aromatic Scheidam Schnapps,
N PRESENTING THE ABOVE JUSTLY CELEbra‘ed Cordial! to the public in its present form, the undersigned, sole ngctensice deems it necessary to address
a few words to his numerous patrons.
lst. As will be seen below, this is no new invention,
for the first time brought foward, nor Is it an imitation
of any other compound, but the application of acquired
knowledge,
2nd. The proprictor earnestly entreats the public not
to beled away by calumuious reports, industriously cireuluted by parties inte-este! in underrating the valnable
medical qualities of his ‘‘Schnapps,"’ but to read tbis no
tice, and then try, and judge fr themselves.
3d. The proprietor will detail the means by which he
beeame possessed of the knowledge of the virtues of
ef this preparation, the applicaton of whch has rendered
Schnapps s» deservedly famous.
From time immemorial good and holy men have retired
Som the world and its cares and tumults, and have passed the rest of their days in meditation, study, or the
prac'ice of religious duties. Perhaps no occupation has
been more followed by these reclnses, than the culling of
simples, the study of botany, and preparation of herbs
for medicinal purposes, and by no religious order or sect,
has this study been more pursued than by the Carthusian
monks. When, in A. D. 503, St, Francis d' Assis, their
founder, returned from his missionary labors in Africa
and Asia, he brought with him a profound knowledge of
botany ; on his death bed he ineuleated the study of herbs
on lis diciplins, and enjoined it as a part of a monastic
discipline, as a means of alleviating the pains and diseases of suffering hum=nity, and the result wa3, the production by the monks of the monastery of “La Grange
Chartreuse,” (one of the largest and most important institutions in France) of the world renowned C_rdial that
bears their name. ‘‘Chartreuse,” composed entirely of
flowers and aromatic herbs of medicinal qualities.
An ancestor of the present proprieter was the superior of this religious order—by him the sccret of the preparation was transmitted to his descendants It has
remained in the family, handed downfrom father to son,

It will instantly check the ague in persons who have suffered for any length of time, from one day to twenty years
so that they need never have another chill, by continuing
its use according to directions.
It will immediately relieve all the distressing results of
billions or ague diseases, such as general debility, night
sweats, ete. The patient at once begins to recover appetite and strength and continues until a permarent and rad
ical cure is effected. And asa proof that it is also
WORTHY OF PUBLIC CONFIDENCE,
Because of its Singular and entire Harmlessness. The
following certificate from the most celebrated chemists in
the United Ltates is attached to every bottle :
coh New York, June 11, 1855.
Ihave made a chemical examination of Rhodes’ Fever
and Ague Cure, or Antidote to Malaria, and have tested it
for Arsenic, Mercury, Quinine and Strychnine, but have
not found a particle of either init, norhave I found any
substance in its eomposition that would prove injurious to
the constitution. JAMES R. CHILTON, E. M. Chemist,
This allows ofits free use as a preventive by which all
persons may thus be sure of entire freedom from the above
named diseases no matter how sickly the saason of swampy the locality.
Proofs of Efficacy are frequently published, and the confidence of the public is asked only in proportion to its actual merits wherever introduced and used—These only
are relied upon to prove ils worth.
One or two bottles will answer for ordinary cases some
may require more. Directions printed in German, French,
