When the gentlest zephyrs float, With their fond tones of love, And sweet music's touching notes, Attend them as they rove ; O then, how sweet at even, To list with thee awhile ; Then thy mel low notes are given, Or breathed with woman's smile. . Tia music's affeotive strain, That thrills cach sensive part And strikes love's tenderest vein, That circles ‘round our heart. When this life has lost its glow, Some anthem sweetly sing, ‘When my heart is beating slow, But gently touch the string.” Yet if musie here eo sweet Have rapturous moments given, Lighter, far, the heart must beat, With psalms as sung in Heaven. . NOT A LICK AMIS8. The following extract from the summary article of Bennet’s last Herald gives more hard hits than we usually sce in so small a space: In another column we give a long speech, received by telegraph, at a vast expense, made by Commodore Stockten . on floggingin the Navy. This is another Presidential speech, made for bunkum. Our Senatorial reporter showed little tact in putting the press of New York to such an expense for such a mass of stuff, which every practical naval . the fathers and the scriptures in the
man redicules. The speech of Stockton did not deserve over twenty lines. and it cost about $200 for telegraphing alone. Any New York lawyer would make as good a speech for ten dollars. . THE.THREE BRIDES. A TURILLING &TORY. “Do you sce,” history I am about to relate. . a little desolate house, with a decayed . fence in front, and a few stunted apple trees on the ascent behind it. It is sadly out of repair, and the garden is now overgrown with weeds and brambles, and the whole place has a desolate appearance. If the winds were high now, you might hear crazy shutters flapping against the sides and the wind tearing the grey shingles off the roof. Many years ago, there lived in that house an old man and his son, who cultivated the few acres of grourd that belonged to it. “The father was a self-taught man, deeply versed in the mysteries of science, and as he could tell the name of every flower that blossomed in the . wood, or grew in the garden, and used . . to sit up late at night at his books, or reading the mystic story of the starry heavens, men thought he was crazed jor bewitched, and avoided him as the ignorant ever shun the gifted and enlightened. A few there wera, and among others, the minister, the lawyer and the physician of the place, who showed a willingness to afford him countenance, but they soon dropped his acquaintance, for they found the old man somewhat reserved and morose, and moreover their vanity was. wounded on discovering the extent of . . his knowledge. “To the ministers he would quote so x 8 Pe ANI “In this village lived three sist al) beautiful and accomplished. This intelligence is no doubt true; and we shall accordingly look, at an early day, for the British to withdraw entirely from Mosquito ; in which case, of course the Nicaraguan government will resume jurisdiction over that portion of its territory. The King of Mosquito and his suite will, therefore, soon have to shift for themselves. When his Majesty hears the news he will be likely to exclaim—as a certain prominent candidate for the Presidency of the United States did a few years since—‘where shall I go?” Unless he be put on the pension list, and supplied with whiskey and tobacco, he will inall probability be induced to remove his court and his throne, which it is said, was a whiskey barrel, to some . part of the British possessions in the West Indies. If he should not take this course, he would be a capital specu. . philosophy and science were unfolded one by one to the enthusiastic son of the solitary. . “Years rolled away, and the old. 'man died. He died when a sudden. storm convulsed the face of nature; when the wind howled around the sheltered dwelling, and the lightning played above the roof, and though he went to heaven in faith and purity, the vulgar thought and said the Evil one had claimed his own in the elements; I'. cannot paint to you the grief of the, son at this bereavement. He was for . amoment as one distracted. The minister came and uttered a few hollow phrases in his ear, and afew neighbors, impelled by curiosity to see the interior of his dwelling, came to lation for Barnum. The King of Mos. . quito, with his suite and throne, would . “draw immensely in the United States,” . as the Prince of Showmen said of Lola . Montes. We therefore recommend Bar. num to send an agent after his Majesty . at once, and secure him for exhibition in . this country. He would be twice as! valuable to him as the Fejee mermaid, . and four times as much 60 as the woolly . horee, which Col. Benton swore before . a Grand Jury at Washington was posi. tively not caught on the other side of . the Rocky Mountains, by his son-in-law, Col. Fremont. as was represented. . G& We learn from the Calaveras Chronicle, that Mr. Sheriff Marshall shot a couple of /renchmen a few . days ago, at a placer between Carson . and Murphy’s Camps. ‘The Frenchmen had refused to obey an order of court, swearing that they recognized . no law in California, and would not . obey its mandates. A large body of . them having got together and assumed , a hostile position, Mr. Marshall and . his party found there was no recourse . left them but to use their weapons, . which they did with such effect as to kill one of their antagonists on the spot, and wound another severely. Stitn ANnotHer.—Last week a lump of pure gold, weighing sixteen ounces, was found by a negro named Thomas, in a gulch known as Kellum’s Gulch, which runs iato the Sonora Creek. . AoruEr BurGiary.—The dwel. ling of B. A. Stephenson, Eaq., on the . his funeral. With a proud and lofty look, the son stood above the duat and the dead, in the midst of the band of hypocritical mourners, with a pang at his heart but serenity on his brow. —. He thanked his friends for their kind. ness, acknowledged their conytesy and . then strode away foi ile rave, to} bury his grief in the privacy of the! deserted dwelling. “He found at last the solitude of the mansion almost insupportable, and . he paced the ebony floor from morning till night, in all the woe and desolation, vainly importuning heaven for relief. It came to him in the guise of poetic inspiration. He wrote with wonderful ease and power. Page after page came from his prolific pen, almost without an effort, and there was a time when he dreamed (vain man) of immortality, Some of his productions came befere the world. They were praised and circulated; and inquiries set on foot in the hope of discovering the author. He, wrapped in the veil of impenetrable ob-! scurity, listened to the voice of ap-! plause, more delicious because it was obtained by stealth. From the obscurity of yonder lone mansion, and . from this region to send lays which astonished the world, was indeed a triumph in the visionary bard. “ His thirst for fame had been gratified, and he now began to yearn for the companionship of some sweet being of the other sex, to share with him the laurels he had won, and to whis. per consolation in his ear in moments of despondency, and to supply the void . corner of Clay and Powell streets, was entered by burglars on Saturday . sioned. He would picture to himself which the death of a father had occa. thrilling answer. in the arms of her husband and he sister Madeline. This was the stu dent’s second heavy afiliction. “Hence his only solace was to si with the sisters of the deccased and talk of the lost one. To Adelaide offered his widowed heart. The bri dal was not one of revelry and mirtt Yet they lived happily, and the ros again blossomed in the garden. Br it seemed as if fatality pursued thi singularman. When the rose wither ed and the leaf fell, in the mello autumn of the year, Adelaide tee, sickened and died like her sister, in the arms of her husband and Madeline “ Perhaps you will think it strange, young man, that after all, the wretched survivor stood again at the altar. Madeline, I well remember her. She was a beauty in the true sense of the word--she might have sat upon a throne, and the most loyal subject, the proudest peer, had sworn the blood in her veins descended from a hundred kings. She loved the widowed and she wedded him They were married in that church. It was on a summer afternoon--I recollect it well. During the ceremony, the blackest cloud I ever saw overspread the heavens, and the moment this bride pronounced her vow, a clap of thunder shook the building to the centre. Ilthe females shrieked, but the bride elf made the response with a steady voice, and her eye glistened with a wild fire as she gazed upon her bridegroom. When arrived at her house she sunk upon the threshold; but this was the timidity of the maiden. “ When they were alone he clasped her hand, and it was as cold as ice! He looked into her face—‘ Maiden,’ said he, ‘what means this? Your check is ss pale as your wedding gown. ‘The bride uttered a frantic shriek. ‘My wedding gown!’ exclaimed she, ‘no, no—this is my sister’s shroud! The hour of confession has arrived. It is God that impels me to speak. 7o win you I lost my own soul. Yes, yes—I am a murderess! She smiled on me in the joyous affection of her young heert, but I gave her the fatal drug. Adaline twined her white arms around my neck, but I administered the poisor Take me to vour arms; I have lo: my soul for you, and mine you mu be!’ “ And then,” continued he in a ho.: low voice, “at that moment came the thunder, and the guilty woman fe'l dead on the floor!” The countenance of the narratot expressed all he felt. “ And the bridegroom /” asked I, “ the husband of the destroyer and the victim, what became of him ?” “ He stands before you!” was the Surface Pickings in Sonora.— Last Sunday, Mr. John Rabey was walking along a little to the north efthe Bull Pen, and observed a small quantity of night, and robbed ofa few articles of. }the felicity of a refined intercourse quartz sticking out from the ground, jewelry and $300 ‘in money.
