Liberia.---Rey. J. W. Roberts, brother of President Roberts, who has resided twenty-two years in Liberia, made a speech in New York lately, in behalf of Colonization, in which he said: «“ Many come rich. Mr. Murray, for instance, is worth some $5000; Mr. McGill, $3000;.Mr. Blackledge, $8000; and} Over four and not over five, 3 cents; and . necting with Simon Harris, $5900. about a dollar a barrel. to be*had for nothings ‘There is abandance of timber of various kinds, all valuable wood and used for Ccifferent purposes. ‘he produce of palm oil is increasing 25 per cent., and the experts of it amounted to 10,000 gallons. It is shipped principally to Kngland and the United States. There are schools in every settlement; a high school in Monrovia presided over by Rev. Mr. Wilson. The average health is about the same in Liberia as it is in Virginia; his own health had improved. The people are contented, and there are none who would return to Ameri¢a, except for the purposc of paying a visit to their friends. The size of the farms ranges from five to fifteen acres. ‘The land is exceedingly produetive, always yielding two crops a year. Wheatis not grown, but large quantities of Indian corn are raised. Every man from 16 to 50 years of age is a soldier. There is every reason to believe that the people will always have the ability to preserve self government.” The Soldiery of Euvrope.--Mr. Calvert, in his “Scenes in Europe,” says: “Two millions of soldiers who garrison tho continent of Europe are but legalized footpads. They hold their bayonets to the throats of the nations, while kings and their minions rob their souls and their pockets, and their lives. It is brute force, compelling the mind, in its lowest, as well as its highest needs, crippling it in all its means. Freedom of speaking, of printing, of going and coming, of buying and sclling, of associating, all are curtailed, hampered or suppressed. Every right of manhood is maimed or crushed. Against such violence what defence is there? Incalculabiy more effective arms than pistols, even against pistols themselves, are thoughts, when you can use them; and at this moment, in the face of artillery and the hangman, they are used with an efficiency that startles the gods of gunpowder.” Noble Oonduct.--The Panama Star relates an instance of noble generosity on the part of Goy. Aoldan, which entitles him to the gratitude of the American people. The Charity Hospital in Panama being full to overflowing, and the yellow fever making its appearance in the city, the Directors of the Hospital called on the Governor for relief. He immediately ordered the removal of the troops from the barracks and the fitting up of that building for a temporary hospital. He also proposed a subseription of funds for the benefit of the sick, and headed the . Ney Bridge over Bear River. these fasclaailng bal g list with a contribution of one hundred dollars, to which upwards of fourteen hundred dollars were added in a few hours. Such prompt and generous conduct reflects the highest honor on tho character of Roldan, who holds the office of Governor of the Province of Panama, under the New Grenadian government. —— gay ‘Sambo, what am your "pinion ‘bout de married life? Don’t you tink it the most happiest +” “Well, Pll tell you about dat ero— ‘pend eltogedder how doy enjoy demselves.” ren.. We read that ea tery A in Indiana, alter two years’ labor, has perfected an instrument which enables him to see through the human body. Flesh viewed through this instrument is ren-. ly, should not fail to avail themselves of the . dered transparent as glass, and has a pink tinge. Mr. Somebody must bo a near relative of Baron Munchausen, Ratlreads.—A Washington" letter to the N, Y. Hxpress says: “The railroad schemes pressed the coming session of Congress, and among them is to be the great Northern Railroad from the head of Lake Superior to Puget’s Sound. 2d, From the Mississippi through Iowa. 3d, Irom St. Louis through Missouri. 4th, From Memphis (Tenn.) through Arkansas. 5th, Vhrough Texas, (on the Gulf of'. : Mexico,) to San Diego, etc.” —. Emigration from Liverpool.—The number of emigrant-ships which left the port ot Liverpool in the last month for Australia and America was 36, having on board a total number of 12,188 souls. The number of ships which left in October was 42, and of emigrants 17,248. In November, 1851, the number of ships was 97, and of emigrants 11,632.
