SrRYCHNINE.—This poison, which
has of late become so notorious in its
abuse (we cannot say use) is the most
uncertain in its action on the human
frame : in some producing instant death;
the same does in others bringing on
tetanic convulsions, and ina lucky few
no effect at all; and this does not appear to have any relation te the physical strength of the patient.
It isa whitish crystalline substance,
and is extracted from the nut of a tree
Ned mux vomica. This tree geri i Ci Ss]
Ceylon, is of a moderate size, and hia
thick, shining leaves, shor
crooked stem. In the f
readily recognized by its
colored berries, about as la z
pippins. ‘The rind is smooth and hard,
and contains a white pulp, of which many varieties of birds are very fond ,
within this are flat, round seeds, not an
inch in diameter, eovered with very
beautiful silky hairs, and of an ask gray .
color. The nut is the deadly poison,
which was well known, and its medicinal properties well understood by Oriental docters long before Europe or America heard ity name. ‘ Dog killer’ and
‘fish seale” are translations of two of
its Arabic names.
Vhe natives of Hindostan often eat it
for months, and it becomes a habit, like
opium eating, with the same disastrous
results. They commence with the taking the eighth of a nut a day, and}
gradually increase their allowance to an
entire nut, which would be about twenty
grains, Ifthey eat directly before or
after food, no unpleasant effeets are
produced ; but if they neglect this precaution, spasins result. ‘The chemical
tests for it are numerous, but only one
or two can be relied upon as thoroughly
accurate.

EncocuraGinG Prepicrion.—The
following hopeful prediction was made
by Senator Seward in a speech on the
treasury note bill :
“In my judgment, the acceleration of
business is going to be rapid just in proportion to the rapidity with which business has declined : and I expect to see
every day, and every hour of every day,
marked by a rise in the prosperity of the
country, graduated just exactly by the
suddenness of the depression. The
causes of the disaster are gone. I think .
there is nothing before us buta great
revival of business and plethora of money to reviveit in all departments. I
may be mistaken in this, but lam_ willing to stand by it.”
Love or CuHitpREN.—Tell me not of
the trim, precisely arranged homes
where there are no children; “where,”
asthe good Germans have it, “the fly
traps always hang straight on the wall”
tell me not of the never-disturbed nights
and days; of the tranquil, unanxious
hearts where children are not ! care not
for these things. God sends children
for another purpose than merely to keep
up the race—to enlarge our hearts, to
make us unselfish, aud full of sympathies and affections: to give our souls
higher aims, and to call our faculties to
extended enterprise and exertion : to
bring round our fireside bright faces and
happy smiles, and loving tender hearts.

ANOTHER BourBon.—A writer in one
of the magazines, emulous of the fame
acquired by the inventor of the Indian
Dauphin Williams, starts the story that
the real Louis Napoleon died in a fit, in
a drinking house in New York, some
years since, and that a Yankee named
Bowen, who had long been his companion in dissipation, assumed his name,
sailed immediately for Europe, attended
Queen Hortense in her dying moments,
imposed upon the French people as a
genuine Bonaparte, and finally sueceeded to the imperial throne.

Purchasers are particularly request¢d to return the

LACOUR’S CONCENTRATED ACID will, in five
hours after being mixed, change five gallons of good
Vinegar and twenty-five gallons of water to thi ty gallons of the most acid Vinegar that can be found in the
market. By the use of Lacour’s Concentrated Acid,
vinegar can be made for one dollarand sixty cents per
barrel.
FOR MAKING LIQUORS, Lacour’s Oils require no
preparation—only } wr the oil inte the Whiskey and
shake well. The Liguurs thus made will have a fine nat
ural aroma, a full, rich, eily taste ; a beautiful transpar
entcolor anda fine bead. Lacour’s oils exert three distinct properties in converting common whisky to brandy
gin, &c. The first property combines with and subsides
in the form of floculent particles the whole of the ¢rain
oil, (Amylic Alcohol.) The Whiskey is thus deprived of
that peculiar irritating and burning taste, and becomes
a neutral spirit; the second property cussists in an oily
mucillaginous taste imparted to the liquor, which renders it mellow, and imparts an appearance of great age;
the third property is exhibited in the rich vinous nutty
odor that is imparted to the liquor, which reude:s distinction from the genuine brands impossible.
These oils are put upin quart flasks ; each flask con
tains sufficient oil for making three hundred gallons of
liquor, Fulland comprehensive directions accompany

As allother Cough remedies do, In the second place, it
always CURES the DISEASE ina FEW DAYS. never fails
andi PLEASANT TO TAKE—is purely vegetable and wniform in its setion, and no unpleasant consequence will
follow its use.
Another reason why it should be preferred, itis prepared from the receipt of an old and experienced practitioner who has devoted Thirty Years to the study and
investigotion of diseases of the Lungs and Chest. “Most
patients will not take the ordinary cough remedies from
the fact thatthey are unpleasant to take, uneertain in
their action and always preducing sickness at the Siomach.
Tbe PECTORAL BALSAM is pleasant totake,is certain
to cure the disease, will not sicken the Stomach, but will
relieve and eure the Cough by allaying irri‘ation, promoting expectoration and procuring QUIET and REFRESHING
SLEEP.
The most obstinate Bronchal and Pulmonary diseases
are cured by the use of this remedy in from & to 0 days.
Many eases of seemingly, hopeless Consamption have
been permanently cured by the eontinned nse of this
medicine. Never give up while there isa bottle to be
had.
Any numberof Testimonials have been reeeived by
the Proprietor with the request that they might be
