THE ASSEMBLY OF THE DEAD. Dr. Reed, a traveler through the highands of Peru, is said to have found, not A great while ago, in the desert of Lacoama, the dried remains of an assemblage of human beings—five or six hundred in number—men, women and children, seated ina semi-circle as when alive, staring into the burning waste before them. They had not been buried —life had not departed before they thus sat around, but .hope was gone; the Spanish invaders were at hand, and no hope being left, they had come hither to die. They still sat immovable in the dreary desert, dried like mummies by the effect of the hot air; they still keep their position, sitting up as in solemn council, while o’er that Arcopagus silence brooks everlasting. With dull and lurid skies above, And burning wastes around, A lonely traveler journey’d on, Through solitudes profound. No wandering bird’s adventurous wing Paused o'er that cheerless waste, No trees across those dreary lands A welcome shadow cast. Society oF Opp FELLOWS AND ITS Oricin.—The origin of the parent society of Odd Fellows is of ancient date. It wasestablished by the Roman soldiers in camp, after the order of Israelites, during the reign of Nero, the Roman Emperor, who commenced his reign in 55, 1802 years ago, at which time they were ealled Fellow Citizens. The name of Odd Fellows was given in the year 79, by Titus Cesar, Emperor of Rome, from their singularity of motions, and from their knowing each other by night as well as by day ; and for their fidelity to him and to their country, he not onl gave to them the name of Odd Fellows, but at the same time, as a pledge of friendship, presented them with a dispensation, engraved on the arch of Titus Cesar, the ark of the covenant, the sun for N. G.; the moon and stars for V. G.; a camp for Seeretary; the Lion for Guardian; the Deve for Warden; and Mortality for G.M. The first Odd Fellows made their appearance in Great Britain at the time an invasion was made by one of ‘Titus Cxsar’s generals, (Agricola,) on North Wales, and shortly afterward, on the Island of Mona, now called Anglesea. ‘The first account we find of the order spreading into othor countries, is in the fifth century, when it was established in the Spanish dominions, under the Reman dispensation; in the sixth century, by King Henry, in Portugal; and in the twelfth century, in France, afterwards in England, by Jno. de Neville, attended by five armed knights from France, who formed a Loyal Grand Lodge of Honor, in London, which order remained until the latter part of the reign of King George III. when a part of them began to form themselves into a union. Now it has numoronus branches nearly all over the world—has lodges in the United States, Canada, Cape Good Hope, Port Netal, New Zeland, Pacifie Islands, Australia, the East and West Indies, France and other places; and is enabled by its peculiar constitution, to afford as a benefit society, greater advantages than can be ebtained in any other association. It is comprised of nearly thirty thousand members, and possesses in the aggregate £2,000,000 sterling capital. Some 23,319 members entered last year; paid last year for funerals, near .37,000, and for sick relief, £90,000. Ifto this be added the payment to widows and orphans, it will give atotal of £159,000.— English Paper. With seorchlng pestilential breath, The desert blast swept by, And, with a dull and brazen glare, The sun looked from the sky. Yet onward still, though worn with toil, The eager wandrer pressed, ry Whtle earnest hope lit up his eye, And nerv'd his fainting breast. Why paused he in his onward course ? Why held his struggling breath ¢ Why gazed he with bewild’red eyes ? In this—the vale of death ? Before him satin stern array, All hushed as if in dread, Yet, Cold and motionless, and calm, A concourse of the dead. Across the burning waste they gazed, With fixed and stony eye, Asif strange fear had chained erewhile Their gaze on vacancy. And woe and dread on every brow In changeless lines were wrought— Sad traces of the anguish deep That filled their latest thought. They seem'd a race of other times, O’er whom the desert blast, For many a long and weary age, In fierce wrath had passed; Till, seathed and dried, each wasted form Its rigid aspect wore, s successive passed Unchang’d as yea The lonely desert o’er. Was it the clashof foreign arms ? Was it the invader's tread ? From which this simple minded race In wildest terror fled ; Choosing, amidst the desert sands, Seathed by the desert’s breath, Rather than by the invader’s steel, To meet the stroke of death. A Novet Covurrsuip.—-Captain Tiger says: “I courted her under singular circumstances. I won her through a rash vow. Thus: I saw her—I loved her— I proposed—she refused. “You love another,” said I. “Spare my blushes,” said she. “T know him,” said I. “You do,” said she. “Very good,” I exclain.ed; “If he remain here I'll skin him.” I wrote hima note. I said it wasa painful thing—and so it was. I said I had pledged my word as a gentleman to skin him—my character was at stake —I had no alternative. As an officer in her Majesty’s service, I was bound to And there they died—a free-born race— From their proud hills away ; While round them, in its lonely pride, The far free desert lay. And there unburied still they sit, All statue-like and cold; Free e’en in death, though o’er their homes Oppression’s tide hath rolled. From the Programme. The Tragedy of ‘‘ Othello” in Little. We do not sce how the story of “The Moor of Venice ”’ could be told in fewer bz do it. I regretted the necessity, but it or more suggestive words than it is here, . must be done. He was open to convieby an Irish acquaintance of ours: tion. Hesaw that the rules of the se:vice were imperative. He fled—I married her. AN INGENIOUS SPECULATION.—A member of the French Academy, in a laborious dissertation on the weights and measures of the ancients, favors us with the following chronological scale of the various heights of men since the creation: Adam, 123 feet 9 inches; Eve, 118 feet 10 inches; Noah, 103; Abraham, 27; Moses, 13; Hercules, 10; Alexander, 10; Julius Cesar, 5. He sagely adds that if Providence had not pleased to suspend this progressive decrease, men would now be no bigger than the smallest insect. Othello was a captam bould, Though black as coal by nature; To Desdemona he was bound A beautiful young crayture. With her he led a happy life, For she was no virago, Untill one day he chanced to meet A villain, named Iago. Says he, your wife’s a perjured jade, She is a faithless lassie, oh! She doesn’t care a straw for you, She'd give your eyes for Cassio. With him she gallivants about, In all her hours of laysure ; She stole your pocket handkerchief, For him to wipe his razor. My handkerchief! my handkerehief! Othello then did stammer, My cotten pocket handkerchief! “Oh, d— her, lewd minx, d— her.” THe Greatest Wonpver Yet.—Calvin Edson, and all the fat women, wharfs and giants, are eclipsed by a man now on exhibition at Havana, who was born without either hands or arms, but who, having tenaciously set himself to work to conquer the inconveniences consequent upon such a deprivation, has made himself a wonder by the variety of his feats. Among other things he announces himself able to spin a top with such perfection that it will hit any spot named, to spin a dollar over a table and put it in his left ear and take it out again, to make a knot with a halter, to thread a needle, to ascend and descend a ladder, to uncork a bottle with a cork screw, to lead a fowling piece and kill anything designated, or put out a candle with a simple wad—quite enough wonders for a man with neither legs or arms. Neither with dagger, nor with dirk, For that would make a foul stir: But first Tl put the candle out, Add shlay her with the boulster. j= A ¢entleman was once diring with a friend, when a most dreadful storm arose. In hopes of its abatement the entertainment was prolonged to the latest possible hour ; but at Tength it was over, and the storm showed no signs of ceasing, but on the contrary, grew worse and worse. The host insisted upon his guests acceptance of a lodging for the night, in view of the impossibility of his reaching home. The guest complied, but in a few minates was missed from the parlor. In half an hour he re-appeared, drenched with rain. “Where, in heaven’s name, have you been?” asked the host, viewing the singular object, which looked like a dog about the paws, and a weeping willow about the head. “I, said he, quietly shaking off the water, “I have been at home to tell my wife that, as it was such a bad night, I should not return.” The Willow Mi ing Company. SurcipeE.— ‘Suppose, sir,” said Boswell to Dr. Johnson, after having put the case of one who was accused of forging a will, and who had sunk himself into the Thames before the trial of its authenticity came on, “that a man is absolutely sure that if he lives a few days longer he will be detected in a fraud. the consequence of which will be utter disgrace and expulsion from society.” Johnson replied—* Then, sir, let him go abroad to a distant country ; let him go to some place where he is not known ; don’t let him go to the devil where he is known.” A.
