EITTEN GOSSIP.
BY T. WESTWOOD.
Kitten, kitten, two months old,
Wooly snowbill, lying snug,
Curied up in the warmest fold
Of the warm hearth rug,
Turn your drowsy head this way.
What is life? Oh, Kitten, say !
“Fife!” said the Kitten, winking her eyes,
And twitching her tail in a droll surprise—
“Life ? —Oh, it’s racing over the floor,
Out at the window and in at the door;
Now on the chair back, now on the table
With baus of cotton and skeins of silk,
And crumbs of sugar and jugs of miik,
All so cozy and comfortable.
Its patting the little dog’s ears, and leaping
Round him and o’er while he’s sleeping—
Waking him up in a sore affright.
Then off and away like a flash of Light.
Life! Oh, it’s rclling over and over
Oa the summor-green turf and budding clover;
Chasing the shadows as fast as they run,
Down the garden paths in the mid-day saa,
Prancing and gamboling, brave and bold,
Climbing the tree stems, scratching the mould,
That's Life !” said the Kitten two months old.
Kitten, Kitten come sit cn my knee,
And lithe and listen, Kitten, to me 2
One by one, ob ! one by one,
The sly swift shadows sweep over the sun—
Daylight dieth and—kittenhood’s done,
And Kitten ob ! the rain and wind!
For cai-hood cometh, with careful mind,
And grave cat-duties follow behind.
Hark ! there’s a sound you cannvt hear ;
Vil whisper its meaning in your car:
MICE !
(The Kitten stared with her gteat green eyes,
And twitched her tail in a queer surprise )
mice!
No mere tit bits, dainty and nice:
No» more mischief and no more play;
Lut watching by night and sleeping by day,
Prowling wherever the fue doth Jurk—
Very short commons and very sharp work,
And Kitten, ch! the bail and the thunder!
That's a blackish cloud, but a blacker’s under,
Hark ! but you'll fall from my knee, I fear,
When I whisper that awful word in your ear —
R-R-R-naAts!
(The Kitten’s heart beat with great pit-pats,
But her whisker quiver’d, and from their sheath
Flashed out the sharp, white, pearly teeth )
R-R-R-RATS !
The scorn of dogs, but the terror of cats ;
The eruellest foes but the fiercest fighters ;
The sauciest thieves and the sharpest bighters.
But, Kitten, I see you've a stoutish heart,
So, courage ! and play an honest part ;
Use well your paws,
And strengthen your claws,
Ani sharpen your tecth and stretch your jaws—
Then woe to the tribes of pickers and stealers,
Nibblers, and gnawers and evil dealers !
But now that you kuow Life’s not precisely
The thing your fancy pictured so nicely,
Off and away ! race over the floor,
Out of the window and in at the door;
Roll on the turf and bask in the sun,
Ere night time cometh, and kittenhcod’s done.

A Curious Japanese Law.—The Japanese, whom we regard as being at best
only semi-barbarians, never punish any
one for escaping from prison. They hold
that it is the natural right of every one to
exert his ingenuity for regaining his liberty: and when retaken, no harshness is
used in the conveyance back or subsequent
detention. If there be blame any where,
it is with those who suffered him to escape
through remissness in vigilanee. This we
have on the authority ot a Russian, who
provements,
was one of the few survivors froma Y¥essel wrecked on their inhospitable coast.
After being inearcerated according to their
aceustomed rule, he escaped to where he
expected a boat would take him to some
ofthe European ships in the offing; but
he was recaptured, and lodged again in
rison. He was greatly surprised at his
mild treatment afterwards, which he feared was only preparatory to a cruel death,
till he learned their criminal escape law.
