aS + ~~ al + lt Che *ebada Fournal Leave Grantrev.—Judge Field has been granted leave of absence from the State for four months. Pike County Market.—Z. P. Roussin has established himself in the substantial and fancy market line on Commercial street. He designs making his place the spot to buy edibles. See his advertisement. The triangular Quarrel—The last mail brings the desirable information that the row betwecn Douglas, Fitch and Jeff. Davis had been left to friends to settle. Either of these gentlemen are willing to bleed but, lika Sniktaw, they dont want to bleed more than a quart at a time. WS A good cigar is a great luxury, and those of our friends who wish to indulge in one, should call on M. Greenhood, on Broad street, who keeps a large stock of tobacco, cigars, pipes, etc. A Lone Session. — We learn from one who knows, that the prospects of a long session of the Legislature are perfectly splendid. The measures thus far passed upon are of little importance to the State at large, and the idea is entertained that the last of the session will be no more favorable in this regard than the first. Aid to Washington Monument.—The giorious 22d was devoted by the Senate to the passage ofa bill making an annual appropriation of $1,000 as the contribution of California to the Washington Monumett. Greeley’s “pumpkin and} River Scenery.—The San Francisco Times says: The late rains have started vegetation everywhere, and coming down the Sacramento is now regarded as a pretty trip. Along the banks the trees are putting forth their leaves and the grass springing up with renewed beauty.— The distant Sierra Nevada monntains on one side and the Coast range on the other, tipped with snow and their bases donned in beautiful green, render the landscape exceedingly attractive. The rolling hills of Solano, with their uniform crop of wild oats, now in the fullness of their glory, adds to the rest, and to the steamboat traveler these things form a pleasing sight. Tueatre.— The Sacramento Dramatic company, consisting of Yankee Addams,” Miss Belle Divine, Miss Annette, and Messrs. Potter, Thayer, Gale, Turpin and others will appear in “Miral da” and “The Last Crime” on Eaturday Miss Annette will execute several popular dances on (ta-morrow) evening. this her first appearance in this city.-Miss Divine will sing favorite sorgs in her usual popular style, and enact the part of Miralda in the Drama of that name. ’ ig a favorite comic “Yankee Adams’ actor with many, and is said to take the characters on this occasion, best calculated to draw ont his peculiar powers. High Fountains —The highest fauutains in the world are the Emperor Fountain, at Chatswoirh, England, 267 feet; one in Cassel, 190 feet; one at St. Cloud, 150 feet, and one at Versailles, 90 feet. ke The Shasta Repudlican advocatstake monument” stands a fair chance. ing the building of permanent county of rising a little. Remonat—Kerysrone Market.— Archy McAllister has removed the Keystone Market to the other side of Commercial street. opposite his old stand, and still calls on his old friends and customers to honor him with their calls and orders. Mac is one of the eldest market men in town, and good to trade with. Faun a Lirrie.—A correspondent of the Morning Call attempts to establish the reputation of Mount Shasta as the highest mountain in the wold, He Beckwith, of the U. S. Topographical Enginecrs, asserted its states Capt. approximative height at about 21,000 fect above the level of the sea, That's raising Mount Shasta considerably, and rather oversizing his pile. Gaireiy Caveutr.—Cox, a citizen of Yolo county, arrested Alex. Giiffin in Sacramento, on Monday, and apprised Sheriff Boring of the fact. Under Sheriff Van ‘Tuesday Hagan proceeded below on morning, and the next day accompanied the prisoner to San Qnentin. ed for she next fifteen years by this time, nuless the Governor’s heart gets in a! melting mood, at the recital of Griffin's . wrongs. The Mill: in the accounted Cocau-nut for.—A friend of ours accounts for the spite of the Demacrat tewaras George Lenhart on the following principle.— Ile says one of the inmates ofthat insti. tution having been an unsuccessful ap plicant for every vacancy present or prospective, and seeing all the officers in good health in the county, he imag. will be yacancics from and it {ain it is not in their line to resign, ines. there ro deaths, is quite takes the only recourse left to secure a place for himself by procuring if possible aremoval. He pitches into Lenhart. therefore, to get him turned out. Our philosophic friend sees a corroboration his theory in the late attempts of the Democrat to take back all it has said against the Sheriff and heaping it with interest upon his deputics. We take no part in this side issue. We copy the following interesting item concerning the Odd Fellows from the Union Democrat of Sonora, Opp Fettows.—This institution has, during the eight years just passed, expended in charity in different ways, in the several States of this Union, the sum of $5,600,000, and assisted 235,074 ofits members during the same time, besides its widows and crphans “who received their special care. 1t numbers at present 175,000 members, and the sum of $20,000 is required annually by the grand lodge of the United States to perform its necessary functions, in collecting its statistics and paying its members, who are required to meet once a year at Baltimore. At its last session it was voted to have a national celebration, and a large committee was raised to carry it into effect. It is to occur in New York city the last week in April next. f&?* The Jackson Ledger relates the following as worthy of particular mention: An incident that occurred in Jackson, has just reached our ears, and thinking it pretiy good, we give it to our readers Mr. —— and his wife were sitting quite clese to each other, in their home; the husband feeling somewhat love-like, although for years a married man, put bis arm around his wife, and saiuted her quite affectionately. The wife pushed him away, saying: “You should not de such things when the door is = and people are passing, they will think we are not married. if they see us kissing each other,” Probably Griffin has a cell engag. ceri offices, says: . Ifthe county cannot buy, the county . can certainly build, and build of marble, and of the very best of marble. At a small expense marble can he sawed at the quarry of Bass, and prepared for a . public building. A building of marble jfrom the quarry named would be a . credit to the county. . ! The Proposed Nevada Territory. —. . . James M. Crane, delegate elect from . the Territory of Nevada, issued a cireu. lar on 18th January, to members of . Congress, presenting a long array of ar. guments why the bill to organize that . Territory should become a law. Its length is about 600 and width 450 miles. Crane was always a longtwinded, gar. rulous cuss. } ~ RAE ne oan . [= A clergyman in Philadel pbia has given a new version of the phrase “fighting on his own hook.”” But yon can't get the mannerin which ke renders it. Listen toit— for “fighting on his own hook,” read “waging war on the prudent individuality of bis personal curve.” . Thegeutl_man who thus gives elegance } to a popular rendition is a cousin to the . . minister who rendered “Let him that is j without sin east the first stone,” into “It . is the prerogative of innocence to propel the imtiary boulder.” this lang ? a ieee re, isn tit i el pe i £3 In view of “bumcombe’ ’ ona war itary apparatuses of the State of Miss . issippi: ; “4 flint lock muskets—all rusty, and i no breeches to at least two. 1 c#nnon. 5 7 bayonets—rusty, with no points. A pile of beits and scabbards, but no swords, 50 catri'ge boxes. 5 major generals. 10 brigadier generals and 60 colonels. 60 lieutenant colonels, 60 majors, and will soon have 600 captains. 1200 lieutenants. 4800 sergeants and 4800 corporals. We are happy to say, however, that we have no privates—the Legislature having dispensed with that useless portion of the army.” . . \ H . . = The habit of going constantly armed with a knife or pistol, or both, has been a most prolific cause of crime. The greatest coward is likely to commit under such circumstances the most unprovoked mrrder. Fear makes him anxious to anticipate his opponent, and the more likely to commit an outrage, and hence the most inoffensive man simply guarding his own rights or pursuing his own reasonable and lawful amusements, is liable to be shot down by such a cowardly dog. A Russian View oF THE AcautsiTIioN oF CuBa.—The Russian organ, published at Brussels, in speaking of the President’s hankering after Caba, says : The war which might result from it would be far more disastrous than the Crimean war, which has cost so mueh goldand bloodto the world. It would bea war with a nationwhose products are the first element of industry in all parts of the world, and whose commcercial intercourse makes an important branch of income for most Governments. It would be a violent rupture of all the arteries of commercial circulation ; it would be a fatal separation between Europe, which needs America, and America which can dispense with Europe.— Take from Engiand the gold of California, ana the cotton of Louisiana, and her industry will at once be stopped in its prosperous action. We sincerely hope that such a terrible occurrence will not take place. tS Women can easily preserve their youth, for she who captivates the heart and understanding never grows old. Married happiness is a glass ball. The glad couple play with it during the . honey-moon, when it falls and is broken. ; Teasse bestovred upon tae, i That’s a pretty long and broad cireular and ought to cover the whole ground. . Broad & Pine stree i LONDON CLUB HOUSE GIN TO THE PUBLIC. ZeB~ This celebrated Gin—pretending to nothing but what it is, viz > a pure and unadulterated artiticle, and assuming no artificial merits of what it is not, as some of its rival imitators do—after five years of public approvs! and very extensive sales in California, has been pronounced by the public to be superior, not only as a beverage of general use, to any other article competing against it, but is Unrivalled in its Medical Efficiency in most cases of complaints. To persons travelling in these days ofrapid transit from East to West, North to South, who are constantly changing their water as well their climate; who are drinking, indeed, 2 dozen kinds of water in every twenty-four homss, and each draught containing some pruperty acting inchemicat antagouism to the preceding one thereby causing an unnatural degree of excitement to the stomach—it is positively and absolutely necessary to usc a counteracting agent. From the fact that the “London Club House Gin,” is prepared expressly to meet such exigencies, and to act as we know it will act, as an antidote we confidently prescribe it as the very best article in the country. ‘Fhe name of “Aromatic Scheidam Schnapps” has never been attached in any way to this article. In first presenting the “London Club House Gin,” to the public, my aim was te give them a pure and unadulterated article of Gin, and te eall it by its right name. The successattending its introduetion and extensive sale in California is a sufficient guarantee of the high appreciation of the article by eonsumers. Variouz parties have from time to time put up and shipped to California an article which they call “Crus House Gix.” My Gin, which has gained such a reputation in California, is branded on the cases, “Old London Club House Gin, W. H. D”’ The bottles aleo have a white labe! with a fac similie ofmy signature. I caution all partiesto beware of imitations. WM. H. DALY.
