recently tried at Auburn for failing as
State Treasurer to pay over the State .
$47,947. The jury retutned a verdict
of not guilty. Of course, Dr. Bates
never used the aforesaid sum, and we
have been growling more than a year
about otrr losses when we were $47,000
better off than we thonght we were.
There are two other indictments against
Dr. Bates pending, the trials to come of
soon at the same place. In the language of a prominent cotemporary,
“public prosecutions aie no longer a
farce !”
Rowe, Dr. Bates’ right bower, atter a
years’ residence on board the prison
brig,
contempt the other day and is at liberty.
After deliberating a twelve month he
decided to answer the following questions :
Ast. Who assisted you, if any one, in
earrying the $124,000 from the State
Treasurer's office on the third of Janua.
ry last ? ;
2d. How was the said sum of $124,000
carried away from the T'reasurer’s office
—by hand, wagon, or by what other
kind of conveyance ?
3d. Where did you place on deposit
said sum of $124,000, immediately after
you received it from the State Treasurer?
Mr. Rowe’s statement was as follows:
That, onthe Sd day of January, about
haif-past one o’eloek, he, haying had
the coin counted out to him, put it himselfinto the Express wagon, took it to
the San Francisco boat, and conveyed
it to that city. On the dock he found
Edward Jones, of the firm of Palmer,
Cook & Co., and told him he hgd some
money to putin his keeping. “Mr. Jones .
took the $124,000 and carried it away,
and about an hour thereafter brought
hima receipt therefor, tothe office,
which receipt is now in San Franeisco.
It was placed with Mr. Jones for safe
heeping, and was given him because
their safe was superior, and Mr. Jones
4 perfectly responsible individual. He
had never madea demand since that
time for the money, ashe bad not wanted it, but had no doubt it would be
promptly paid when called for. Mr.
Jones went to New York a month after
the money was paid him, and he had
not seen him since that time. Rowe
was ready to pay the money to the
State whenever proper parties were
ment. The reason he had not told this
before, was because he was concerned
with the Pacific Express Company, and
it would have injured its business at the
time.
“Just So.”=-Says an exchange :
“At the cominencement of a new year,
nearly every one engaged in business .
seeks to add to his chances for suecess
by adopting such additional means for
his advancement as circumstances may
dictate. Many are disposed to try the
merits of advertising, andit isa most
judicious choice. Advertise freely,
liberally and long, and its returns will
be four-fold. Like seed snow in spring
time, it will bear fruit after many days,
as well as its immediate results. Spasmodic advertising is not the thing to
thoroughly test its virtues, Ask our
constant advertisers, and they will declare that it grows as it goes. and ult!mate'y benefits the advertiser beyond
his first expectations.”
New Paryr~~The Marysville News
says that a portion of the democratic
party in that county are now industriously engaged in establishing another
daily journal in our midst, which shall
bear aloft the interwined flags of Broderic Democracy and Republanism. Dr.
FE. A. Theller, late of the San Francisco
Argus, is to be editor of the new journal.

A Medicinal Diet Drink, of eminently salutary qualities, manufactured by himself exclusively, at his factory
at Schiedam, in Holland7
It is made from the best Barley that can be select d in
Europe, with the essence of an aromatic Italian berry, ot
acknowledged and extraordinary medicinal properties.
It haslongsince acquired a higher reputation, both in
Europe aud America, than any other diuretic beverage.
In Gravel, Gout and Rheumatism, in Obstructions of
the Bladder and Kidneys, and ingeneral Debility, its
effects are prompt, decided, and invaiiable reliable And
it is notonly a remedy ter these maladies, but.in all
cases in which they are produced by drinking bad water,
which is almost universally the cause of them, it operates
as @ SURE PREVENTIVE,
The distressing effect upon the stomach, bowels, <
bladder, of travelers, or new residents, and all pers
unaccustomed to.them, produced by the waters of nearly
all our great inland rivers, like the Ohio, Mississippi and
Alabama, from the large quantity of decayed vegetable
matter contained in them, in a state of soltttion, is well
kvow®, as is also that of the waters oflimestofie rcgions.
in producing Gravel, Calculi, and Stcne in the Bladder.
The AROMATIC SCHIED'¢M SCHNAPPS jis an absolnte
corrective of these ihjurious pre rties of bad water,
and consequentiy prevents the diseases which they oecastone Ftis also fouud to be a cure-and preventive of
Fever and Ague, a complaint caused by the conjoint
effects of vegetable malaria inthe atmosphere, and vegetable putrescences in the waters of those districts in
which it principally prevails. The AROMATIC SCHIEDAM
SCHNAPPs is consequently in great demand by persons
traveling, or about to settle in those parts of the country, es) ecially, as weltas b} whan}in every community
where it las become known, on account of its various
other remedial properties,
Inall cases of a Dropsical tendency, it is generally the
only remedy required, when adopted in the early stages
of the disease. In Dyspepsia maladies, when taken in
proper quantities, as a diet drink, and especially at din‘r, itis found. by uniform experience, to he émmentiy
efficacious in the most obstimate cz When even the
best of the usual remedies have failed to affurd more
than temporary rélief. Incases of Flatulency, itis an
immediate and imve riable specitie sand it may be administered in dilnted aml proportionate qiiantities, even to
young iafauts, in ail those paroxysmsof griping pain in

CONSUMPTION CURED.
San Francisco, Nov. 10th 1856.
Messrs. Park & Wuire—Gents :—Itis with pleasu e
I a sure you, that I am able to ald my testimony in favor of Wistar’s Balsam, of Wild Cherry. For over a
year I have beenafilicted with a congh and pain it my
side and brexst, which originated with acold. I had
taken Cherry Pectoral, Jaymes’ Expectorant, Cod Liver
Oil, and many other, popular patent medicines of the
ay—also' spent over one hundred dollars with our phy
sicians, But all proved of no beneficial effect. Read
ing your almanac of 1855, I was induced to try you
Wistar’s Balsamof Wild Cherry, I was, at the times
commenced using it, laboring with every sym: tom o
consumption of the lungs. I found, that after using one
bottle, it gave me relief, and as I considered my case a
hardone,; I sent to your store and bought half a dozen
bottles ; and snflice it tosay. before I had taken it all, I
was well. I must say, that it appeare! to reach the
very place affected,in which all other medicines failed.
IT am now in fallenjoyment of good health, believing,
that had I no‘ made use of your truly valuable Ba
of Wild Cherry, T should now have been past recovery,
if not dead.
I ehall always take pleasare in recommending to
those who are afflicted with coughs, colds, difficult
breathing, pain in the side, or any lung diseases, your
Balsam of Wild Cherry, with the signature you advertise, “Sanford & Park, Cincinnati, Ohio,” as I am informed there is an imitation put up with some other signature. Respectfully yours,

BY INHALING
MEDICATED VAPOR.
DR. S. M. TIBBITS.
DR. S M. TIBBITS, would present the following
facts for the earnest conslderation of those afflicted
with diseases of the lungs.
Medicated Inhalation will eure ConHY?
sumption.
\ Because the remedy is applied dircetly to
the Skat of DISEASE. The medicines being preared in the form of vapor, are conveyed in the air we
reathe to the most minute air cells in the lungs. The
rst effect is to dissolve and render easily expectorated
he secretions in the air cells. This at enec relieves
he lungs from the matter collected there, and the va
pors being composed of healing gums and balsams, a
new state of the parts takes place, the weak air cells
are stimulated and strengthened, the ulcers and cavities heal, and the patient rapidly passes from a state of
disease tohealth. This is the only means that can be
with any certainty relied on tocure Consumption, Asthma, Bronchitis, or any case of .Lnng disease.
The prominent s#fiptoms of Consumption are: slight
hacking cough, mo_tly perceptible on rising in the morning or on going to bed ; tiekling in the throat; sensible inerease of the congh accompanied by @ heavy, yellow mucus expectorations ; hacmoptysis or raising of
blood, which is one of the worst symptoms, as it indicates that tubereles have already formed in the lungs:
painin the chest or si@ts attended with difficulty of
breathing ; chills running up the back and through the
limbs ; heetie fever; night sweats; loss of appetite
diarrhea, ete., ete. F
Tam satisfied that consumption iti its incipient stage
can be cured, but becomes morta! by negicet, and hence
any one suffering from long disease should lose no time
in seeking the aidof this treatment. I would therefore
invite all who are suffering from the abovo described
symptoms to try MEDICATED VAPOR, as the best
remedy, It will certainly do no harm, aud if you desire to regain health, J assure you it is the only effectual
and rational treatment ever employed to relieve these
deplorable maladies,
