ET IGHLY IMPORTANT to the SICK !—Is it not
Awful to Note the Haggard, Sallow, Cadaverous
Faces and Wasted Skeleton Form: we meet—Thisis
not confined to the old, but we see the young, ablebodied
and those in the prime of life, complain after being
here sometime of illness ; some grow unnaturally fat
suddenly ; others waste and grow thin; they cannot
localize or describe their disease, yet they feeluniversally unwell, mentally and physically ; some have pains
and weakness inthe breast, limbs or body; they feel
a wantof muscular and imental energy, a want ofanimation, and have fearful forebodings for the future,
poor appetite, Nervous irritability and sleeplessness ;
theirskin is dry, and occasionally flushed and heated,
thin, pallid gnd yellow.
Now Sudden Deaths, Lunacy and Universal Debility
is too. too prevalent here ; and who wonders when
combined with the climate like this, a dry air impregnated with elictricity and galvani-m? We have many
who have passed through sickness, whose life is IN
TEMPERATE and DEBAUCHED, or have seenothers
who have been nearly Doctored to Death by quack medicines, or by the advice of * The Faculty,”? who have
impregnated them with mercury, calomel, &e,

It is made from the best Barley that can be selected in
Europe, with tho essence of an aromatic Italian berry,
of acknowledged and extraordinaty medicinal properties, [thas long since acquired a higher reputation,
both in Europe and America than any other diuratic
beverage.
Analyzed, it is a perfectly pure Liquor, inits effects a
mild and whoisometonic. It is extensively used and
approved by the medical faculty, the temperance people,
heads of familtes, &c.
In Gravel, Gout, and Rheumatism, in obstructions of
the Bladder and Kidneys, and in General Debilty, its
effects are prompt, decided, and invariably reliable ; and
it is not only aremedy for these maladies, but in all cases
which they are produced by drinking bad water, wnich
is almost universally the cause of them, it acts asa sure
preventive.
For Fever and Ague it is one ofthe most efficacious
preventives that can be resorted to
The Aromatic Scheidam Schnapps,
consequently in great demand by persons traveling,
orabout to settle in new parts ofthe country especialiy,
as well as by many in every community, where it hax
become known, on account of its various other remedial properties.
In ali cases of a Dropsical tendency, it is generally
the only remedy required when adopted in the early
stage of the disease.
In dyspepsia maladies, when taken in proper quantities, as a diet drink, and especially at dinner, it is found
by uniform experience, to be eminently efficacious in the
most ¢bstinate cases, when even the best of the usual
remedies have faiied to afford more than temporary relief. In cases of Flatulency, itis an immediate and invariable specific, and it may be administered in diluted
and proportionate quantities, even to Ycung Infants, in
all those piroxyisms of griping painin the stomach and
bowels to whichthey are especially subject, as well as
the cholic of grown persons.
Its judicious adoption in connection with the principal
me¢als,or when a sense of exhaustion dictates ‘ts use,
never fails to relieve the debility attendant upon protracted chronic maladies.low temperament and exhausted vital energy, by whatever cause induced. These are
facts to which many of the most eminent medical men,
beth in England and tho United States, have borne testimony, and which are corroborated by the highest written authorities.

CERTIFICATE.
The undersigned, desirous of acquaintingthese who
may be unfortunate enough to be similarly afflicted
where a permanent relief of their sufferings may be obtained, feels it his duty to publicly express his sinecre
gratitude to Dr. L. J. Czapkay, for the permanent reeovery of his health. Borne down by the distressing
symptoms incideuttothe vicious habit of uncontrollable
passions in youth, depressed in body aud mind, unable
to perform even the most trifling duty imposed upon the
daily avocations of life, . sought the advide of many
physicians, who at first regarded my disease as of trifling importance, but, alas! after a few weeks, and in
many instances, mouths, of theirtreatment, I found to
my unuttersble horror, that instead of relief the symptoms beeam~ more alarmiag in their tert.re, and being
fiaally told by one that the disease, being principally
confined te the srain, medicines would be of little cons
quence I despaired of ever regaining my health, strength
and enerfiy ; and asa lastres rt, and with but a faint
hope, called upon Dr. Czapkay, who after having examined my case, prescribed some medicine which almost
instantly relieved me of the dull pain and dizziness in
my head, Encouraged by this result, . resolved to place
mkself immediately under his care, and by a strict obedience to his directions and advice, my head became
clear, my ideas collected, the constant pains ia my back
and groins. the weakness of my limbs, the nervous Feaction of my whole body on the slightest alarm or excitement, the misanthropy and evil forebodiigs, the selfdistrustana want of confidence in others, the incapability to study and want of reselutio., the frightfal, the
exciting and at times the pleasurable dreams at night,
followed by involuntary discharges have all disappeared
an i, in fact, in two months after consulting the Doctor,
I felt as if iuspired by anew life, that life which, but a
short time a o, lcoutemplated to end bym: own ‘and.
With a view to guard the unfortunate from falling into the snare of incompetent quacks, I deem it my duty
to offer this testimony to the merit and skill of Dr. Czapkay. and recomend him to all who may stand in need
of medicaia! ice, being assured by my own experience that, «ce under his care, a radical and permanent

DR. C. H. TOZER,
The Great Eradicator of

OULD most respectfully inform those afflicted with

A Practical Treatise on VENEREAL.
By Dr. C. H. TOZER, Sac: amento.
There are No maladies towhich the human fami'y is
liable of Deeper Importance either in a medical e~
moral point of view, than those arising from impure
sexual intercourse. {
As medical men, it is ourbusiness to look at diseases
merely asit affects Lite and Health; and our efforts are
directed, notto the reformation of man’s vici us prepen-ities, but tothe mitigation ofhis BoDILY SUFFERING.
It is in this abstract sense that we write of Venereal Affections. And itis inthis sense tifat the Doctor shegid
address himself to their study. If his feelings areallewed
toinfluence his professional pursuits, bs qualifications:
will necessarily be limited to those subjects that are
mest agreeable to his tastes. To become an enlightened
Practitioner, it is essential that he should be a liberal
and ardent one; and affections, in their nature repulsive
to delicate sentibilities. must be regarded in no other
light than as morbid phenomena of the Living Body.
The whole business of the Medical art, when we takes
low view of it and regard it only as labor, is a disagreeableone. In any form, disease is unpleasant to look
upon. The sick chamber affords no pleasant sights. —
The physician is made the witness both -f physical paim
and meral infirmity, Struck by disease, the attree
tive part of man’s nature are clouded over ; bis pride
is humbled: his intellect is disturbed ; his whela
characcer, ina word, is transformed. Toc often, alae,
is sickness the consequence of his own folly . self-im
dulgence, the gratification of appetites, the eabayes.
ing toil ofavarice, the feveris» Jabors for human sp
plause, all produce their baneful effects upon the Con
stitution. Brttothe medical attendant, the moral ag.
pect of these facts are not to have any influence uper
his -kill or his oares.
At the best, human nature is buf weak. This ie the
first truth for a medical man to learn: and in whatever way this weak ess is exhibited, the philar thre
phic heart willfeel that it isa pleasure, as well
duty, to relieve bodily infirmities, whenever and
however they appear. This isthe higher and nobler
view of medical science, It devotes itself to the mitigation of pain, the abatement of disease, the resterationtohealth. In doirg this, its ministe. must be the
. spectater of much that is disagrecable. But he is rewarded by the lofty satisfaction of feeling that althouga
personal comfort is sacrificed and sympathy is oftem
painfully excited, yet itis throngh sucha road that
Wenevolence has the widest scope, 2nd meets with
the richest return for its Jabors.
Ta this view, a}] diseases are alike to the faithful
physician. He makes nodistinction between the causes
that have developed them. He sees man suffering,
and all his facilities are employed to give him health.
Disease he regardsasa misfortune, and not as a pun.
ishment
Ofall theaffections that affict man, there is ne exe
more terrible in i:s consequences than SYPHILIS,
Dreadful as it is te the person who first contracts it,
frightfulastrequently areits ravaes in his constitu
tion, sending occasionally, in destruction ; yet is a diaease of deeper interest, and more te be lamented wh
itis trensmitted tooffspring Childrenoften come in
the world with the disease hideously tothe eve ; eeyered with blotohes and sores ; with wrinkled fa
having the appearance of old age: and itis ;retable
thatevery particle ofthe living organism is equal)
tainted with the poison’ When such a condition exists, it cannot be doubted that life will too frequently
be short and full of pain.
SCORFULA. CONSUMPTION, and other diseases
that are sojaetimes hereditary, are in many cases, its
fruit; and one way tostay the devastating mareh of
those fearfully fatal affections, is, as far as practicable
to ERADICATE SYPHILIS FROM THE WORLD,
Would it notseem that a disease so prevalent and ce
direful, ought to excite the deepest interest among
the mediea] men, both as respects its true patholegy
and its treatment ‘—What excnse can he offer for his
deficiency, whocalls himself a surgeon, and yet dees
noteven recognize the disease when he secs it, and ie
ignorant ofthe best means of checking d preventing any future evil consequences? Is it cnough fer
him te say thatto the imagination the discase ie a loath
some one ? thatisa disreputable one to have, and 9
disgusting one to treat? Such an cxeuse may, pree
bably, satisfy him whohas nobetter, but will net satiefy science nor philanthrupy.
Whoever undertakes the medical profssion with 6
true spirit, will never rest contented with knowing
only a limited partof it. There is no object that he
thinks unworthy of investigation and study. Hecas
not be satisfied witha smattering knowledge of what
he is bound to nnderstand well. He feels Festia
upon hima double obligation—one, the daty Be ewee
to the public. to whom he announces that he ix aqueli
fied membor of a noble profession; the other, the
duty he owes to himeclif. to make and maintaina re.
putation for attainments and skill. There are seme
practitioners, indeed there are many, who ere ignerent
of several dicases, because they fancy it is not respeetable to treatthem. Of all such persons it may be
serted as beyond dispute, that their ignorance is
confined to these diseases alone ; they will be found deficient in all other pe and are not properly quaiified for the responsibilities they have assumed. Wheever has a just appreciation of the medical art, will
not know any differance in the respectability of diseases.
All maladies are alike fit subjects for his care re
flection; and the only distinction which he acknewledges, ie that which arises from their greater or lees
gravity. Circumstance may, indeed, direct his praetice ina particular channel, so that his businese will
be inclined toone class of afflictions, rather than ane.
ther ; but this is not because he regards some ase beneath or unworthy of his notice.
_Quackery has profited by the megleet thatvemereal
diseases have experienced ; and it is notorious that
pretenders havesecnred alarge @aare oi such praetice. Itistime for the profession to free itself from
this reproach, The welfare of society is as deeply eeg~
cerned inthis as it can possibly be with.any ether die
tase that affiictsthe human family.
