For the Nevada Journal.
TO MRS. JULIA DEAN HAYNE.
Whenever day is done, and evening comes,
It is another day, to sit, and trace
All woman’s feeling in your music tones —
All woman’s passion on youryglowing face ;
And, watching the emotions of a life
In quick succession, pass across your brow—
Now, the perplexity of passion’s strife,
_ Tho sad serenity of sorrow, now —
IT cannot degea yours is an acted part,
But fresh and warm from a true, woman’s heart.
}
Touched by the wand of genius so divine,
Dreams of fair women fill my throbbing brain.
Af the bright visions of the early time,
Are quickened into glowing life, again.
I feel the silent sorrow that could make,
An erring wife—a suffering angel still ;
I trinmph at Ginevra’s vanquished hate,
And grieve beside the death-bed of Camille ;
I shudder at Lucretia’s fearful doom,
Aud drop a tear at loving Juliet’s tomb.
Thanks to God’s gift of genins, that we may,
Even if only ina happy dream,
Steal a brief half-honr from the working-day,
And walk with poets, in the world unseen —
The fair, ideal realm—where life is love—
Where faith is strong,and hearts are free from guile;
Where manhoods truth, and knighly valor prove
The worthiest gifts, to win a lady’s smile.
And woman’s fond devotion, ranks in worth
Above the glittering baubles of the earth.
A BAD FIX.
Once on a ‘ime, in the village of B—,
and state of Massachusetts, lived a
beauteous maiden of seventeen, whom
we will call Fanny L—, and George
B—, was her accepted and devoted lover. The course of true love ran smooth,
and in due process of time came the usual happy termination of their wooing,
and the twain were made one, by the
benediction of Holy Church. They
were married early one summer’s morning, and the same day traveled cozily
and happily together to New York, as
the first stage of their wedding tour.—
As a companion du voyage, a younger
brother: of the bride, a misehievous
young rascal of sixteen, accompanied
them; and well would it have been for
the happy pair, if they had trusted .
themselves to their own society, and
left James at home, to ornament seal
eri illo tetennenanasacansna acne is ssa caspian
tails and snow ball the schoolmaster.
Well, the party arrived at the city, .
and went to the St. Nicholas Hotel.—/
While George was dutifully attending
to the comfort of his young wife, James,
in the performance of his duties as a/
groomsman, went to the office ot the
hotel, te enter the names and select appropriate apartments. Pen in hand, a)
brilliant idea struck him, and in pursv.
ance therewith he entered their names
upon the register thus :
“James L—,
Miss Fanny L—,
George B—.”
and selected three rooms for their accommodation.
Fanny retired early, being somewhat .
fatigued with travel. George smoked .
his cigar for an hour or two, and dream.
ed of —his bachelorhood, we suppose,
and finally requested to be shown to his
apartment. An obsequious waiter came, .
candle in hand, and asked, “What number, sir ?’”’
“With the lady who came with me,”
George replied, slightly blushing.
The waiter smiled, hesitated,
then approached an exquisitely dressed
clerk, and whispered in his ear.
The clerk stepped up to George, and
repeated, “ what room did you say, sir?”
“With the lady who arrived with
me,” George ancwered again, blushing
now to the tips of his ears.
The clerk smiled, end shook his head
as ifin pity at the young man’s igno.
rance. “It won’t do, sir; you have
mistaken the house, sir.
are not allowed here, sir.”
“ What things ?” said George, in amazement.
* You understand me,” said the clerk,
and
.
Such things
winking knowingly; “ this sort of thing . 33
.
wontdo. This isa respectable house, .
sir; only a slight mistake on your part, .
sir; it wont do, sir.”
“Wont do! why, I only want te go
to bed.”
“That you may certainly do—in
your own room, sir; but not in the lady’s apartment, sir.”
“ The /ady’s apartment !
lady is my wife.”
The clerk bowed ironically. “ All
very fine, sir; but it wont go down, sir;
here is the entry, sir.”
George looked at the register, and .
there was the entry, sure enough :—
“Miss Fanny L—,” — “George B—.”
He saw the whole secret at a glance. .
He protested and entreated —but it was .
ofno use. He called on James to wit-!
ness to his veracity——but James was .
no where to be found. The by-stand.
Why, that
ers laughed, and the clerk was inexorabig; and the poor fellow was forced to
retire to his solitary chamber, to pass
his bridal night invoking blessings on
the whole class of “respectable houses”
and younger brothers.
How George justified his conduct to
the disconsolate Fanny, this veritable
history doth not state.
Love’s Sacririce. — When the late
contract between Broderick and Gwin
was about completed, and the bond was
about being sent to the latter for signature, a somewhat celebrated political ;
friend of Broderick, from the mountain, .
suddenly made a new suggestion, and
the following additional clause was inserted ;
And I hereby further promise, ecov.
enant, and agree, that na member of
family, shall in any way interfere, or attempt to interfere, with the disposition
of Federal patronage in California.”
Gwin said it was d—d hard — but he
~igned it.
