Dancer or Wearina Hoops IN A
Hien Winv.—During the wind on Satarday afternoon, and while the dust was
circulating so thick that no one could
see more than the length of an eyelash
in front, a lady, dressed in the most elegant style, in coming round one of the
corners, was lifted off her feet by the
force of the wind acting on the great exanse of surface which she presented to
it. The wind unfortunately did not set
her down in the same position in which
she was before being taken up, but
turning her gently on one side, it laid
her endwise on the sidewalk, where she
commenced a series of astonishing gyrations, rolling over and over on the
hoops of the skirts, and exhibited a species of locomotion which is not generally appreciated, and which may come
into fashion with high winds and large
eirclets of light material. As the lady
thus rolled over and over, several persons were knocked down and passed
ever by the lady and hoops, without
ever knowing that anything had hurt
them. Fortunately for the lady, the
dust and the astonishment of the people
out of doors permitted but a few to witness this new method of getting along
in @ stiff breeze and keeping up full sail
at the same time. As we came round a
corner we found the lady wedged between a lamp post and a hydrant and
immediately assisted her to an upright
instead of a recumbent position.

{e" On the Western Reserve, Ohio,
lives an ossified man. His joints are
fast, and he is not’ capable of making
the slightest movement, except alternately opening and shutting two fingers
of his right hand. His body is as rigid
as iron, and it could not be bent forward
or backward without breaking some of
his bones. This singular process of ossification has been going on in his system for more than twenty years. Heis
now about 46 years of age, and has not
had the use of his limbs, so that he could
walk, since he was nineteen. Ossification commenced first in his ankle joints,
gradually extending itself through his
system until he was entirely hopeless.
If his nails be cut, blood flows from
them. He is blind, too, but is always
cheerful, and converses freely and intelligibly.
Direct Trade WITH Evrope.—The
success of the voyage of the Dean Richmond, from Chicago to Liverpool, haying demonstrated the practicability and
profit of the St. Lawrence route, some
of the Chicago business men are disposed to follow up the experiment. Messrs.
Cameron, Barry & Co., Foreign Marine
Brokers in Chicago, advertise for two
vessels for Europe, one to load lumber
on Lake Huron or Lake Erie for a port
inside the Straits of Gibralter, and not
higher up than Valencia, with return
cargo of fruit and wine, direct to Chica0; the other to load at Chicago and
Milwaukee for the United Kingdom,
immediately on the opening of navigation.
Wirtty.—Clergymen frequently administer personal rebukes from the pulpit. The best we can remember was
that of an Irish curate whose christian
name was Joseph. He had been promised a living by a member of the great
Butler family previous to his coming to
the title and estates. The promise was
not redeemed; and, on the first opportunity the curate had of preaching before the powerful nobleman, he selected
for his text the conclusion of the fourth
chapter of Genesis: “Yet did not the
chief butler remember Joseph, but forget
him.” The Irish Joseph speedily obtained the gift of a valuable living.—
London paper.
A Case.—Everybody is familiar with
the famous case of Builum vs. Boatem,
reported at length in “the Books,” in
which bull (an Irish one) of course.
went aboard a ferry boat made fast with
hay, and chewing up the rope, set the
craft adrift and the whole concern floated off down stream—the owner of the
boat bringing an action against the prorietor of the bull for damages for its
oss, and the owner of the horned “critter’’ a cross action against the boatman
for carrying off the bull.
A knotty case has arisen, in this region. A few nights since, the donkeys,
that are well-known to our citizens, especially the juvenile portion—and which
are possessed of the “freedom of the
city” by the courtesy, being an-hungered, and finding provender as scarce as
provisions in the winter of ’52, went
prospecting, “seeking what they might
devour,” when, after ruminating some
time, they came across a clothes-line,
(not the Clothes-Line Telegraph ;) now,
as “Jack” never “crosses the Line,” at
sea without running a saw—having a
regular sea-saw in introducing the greenhorns, bound “around the Horn,” to Old
Neptune ; so Jack, on land, strikes a bee
line for a good thing. An old donkey
who “knew the ropes,” and was like unto
Fremont’s muel, “only more so,” or the
famous animule of the renewned Squire
of Don Quixotte, espied the prize, and
blowing his horn, he and his followers
commenced the attack, andin a short
time lined their “innards” with a
coating of petti—(we had almost said
it, but we wont) -nd divers unmentionable garments. ‘hey not only cleaned
the clothes-line of all the clean clothes,
but literally “took the rag off the bush”
sweeping everything, “rod, hook and
line,” roping in the whole eoncern.
Now arises a question for our learned
disciples of Themis to settle. The
quandary is whether the clothes so
safely locked upin the peripatetic hair
trunk, safely covered up as they are,
can be recovered by an action of replevin—or whether the proper form 6f action
is that of Trespass, or case—breaking
the Plaintiff's close, or rather closing in
on his clothes-line. Our men “learned
in the law” are trying their best to digest this knotty point, and in the meantime the jackasses are trying their best
to digest the dry goods. ra
We asked the opinion of the learned
disciple of Confucius, who fills the double o
Oinisen office, and the getter-up of linen,

letters expressive of gratitude and thankfulness, some of
which are published below by permission—
SaCRAMENTO, May 15, 1856.
Dear Sir: Suchis the thankfulness I feel for the preservation of my health of both body and mind, and I believe of my life, that I hope I will not be considered intrusive in tendering my thankful aeknowledgments for
restorihg me to health and making my life a boon worth
preserving, when it had become a burthen too great for
me to bear. Vietim as I was to vice that had underminded my constitution, and developed a train of uervous
symptoms, such as nervous debility, headache, distressing timidity, self-distrust, dizziness, love of solitude, loss
of strength and energy, which had made my waking moments wretched and my sleep unrefreshing and was fast
bringing me to the grave ; but thanks to your skill Iam
restored to health, vigor and energy. Hoping to guide
others where they may find relief, you have my permission to make this public.
Gratefully yours, L. WHITE.
MARYSVILLE, June 3, 1855.
Dr. L. J. Czapkay—Sir : I have used the last of your
medicine, and do not think I shall need any more as I feel
very well, except that] have not entirely got my strength
yet, but soon will with the appetite I have. It is just
three weeks, you may reeolleet, since I called at your Institute, with my constitution as I thought, entirely broken, and never thought you would be able to cure me
perfeetly, but thought you might be able to do something
to ease the pain in ny back and head and strengthen
my limbs, which were so weak that they would almost .
give way under me when I walked, and to strengthen
my nerves so that I would not get excited and tremble at
every little thing. Now that yo . know what I expected,
you may judge of my satisfaction at my complete recovery from those symptoms, and the removal of those
splotches and sores from my skin and the ulcers from my
throat ; and the entire stoppage of those emissions which
you said were principally the cause of my sickness. I
can hardly tell you which is the greatest, my joy or my
surprise, for except not having fully got my strength, I
feel as well as any man can feel.
Enclosed I send you twenty dollars over your charge,
and think myself cheaply cured. If you think anybody
will be benefitted, you may put this letter in all the
newspapers.
Gratefully, yours, THOMAS HaYDEN.

Syphilis and Gonorrha@a.—Dr. D, J, Czapkay's extraordinary success in the treatment of Syphilitic and Gonorrheal diseases in the primary and other stages, induces
him to call public attention to the fact that of the great

Secondary Syphilis, which is so destructive of health
producing ulcerations of the throat, destroying the soft

A CARD.
PROMPTED by an honest desire of my heart, I wish to
lay before the public a case which deserves a light commendation, not only as an act of scientific skill, but that
of humanity, also. About two years ago, I suddenly and
from causes unknown to me, was seized with a fit of Epilepsy, which owing to my inabilit to meet the expenses
consequent upon a thorough medical treatment, and the
discouragement which I met with on attempting it, soon
bebome such (as I was then led to believe,) as to defy the
skillofa physician. I was frequently, while in pursnit o
my calling, thrown down to the ground without the slightest warning, and although insensible to the agonies, I yet
despised the miseries of my Ilfe, and soon learned to look
— —— who would — me assistance or shelter me
ager as enemies who sought to prolong misery
of my existence. While in this State, and —
vious to afflictions tasted the sweets of life, 1 once

early habits of youth, viz: Weakness of the back and
limbs, pain in the head, dimness of sight, loss of muscular
power, palpitation of the heart, dyspepsia, nervousness,
irritability, derangement of the digestive functions, general debility, symptons of consumption, &c.

evils produced.
All persons who are afflicted with the above symptons

© Miners, Travellers, Ete. There is no malady of
deeper importance, cither in a medical or moral point
of view, to which the human family 1s more liable than
that arising from impure connections.
Asa medical man it is the duty of every physician to
look at diseases as it affects bealth and life, and his svie
objeet should be to mitigate, as far as lies in his power,
the bodily suffering. Human nature at best is but frail,
all are liable to misfortune.
Of all the ills that affect man nene are more terrible
than those of a private nature. Dreadful as itis in the
person who contracts it, frightful as are its ravages upon
his constitution, ending frequently in destruction and a
loathsome grave, it becomes of still greater importance
when it is transmitted to innocent offspring. Such being
the case hew necessary it becomes that every one having
the least reason to fear that they have contracted the dis
ease, should attend to it once by consulting some physician, whose respectability and education enables him to
warrant a safe, speedy and permanent cure. In accordance with this necessity, Dr. Young feels called upon to
state that, by long study and extensive practice, he has
become perfect master of all these diseases which come
under the dcuomination of venereal, and Naving paid
more attention to that one branch than ot other physician in the United States, he feels himself better qualified
to treat them.
Syphilis in all its forms such as Ulcers, Swelling in the
Groins, Ulcers in the Throat, Secondary Syphilis, Cutaneous Eruptions, Uleerations, Tertuary Syphilis, Syphilis

Gleet, Strictures, False Passages, Inflammation of the
"Bladder and Prostrate Glands, Excoriations, ‘Tumors, Postules, ete. areas familiar to him as the most common
things of daily observation.
The Doctor effects a cure in recent cases in a few days
and finds no difficulty in curing those of long duration,
without submitting the patient to such treatment as will
draw upon him the slighest suspicion, or oblige him to
neglect his business, whether within doors or without.— .
The diet need not be changed, except in cases of severe
inflammation. There are in California, patients [amounting to oyer two thousand in the past year] that could furnish proof this : but these are matters that require the
nicest secreey, which he always preserves.

'O the afflieted—Persons troubled with disease should
peruse the following Letters of Recommendations,
from Dr. J. C. Young's patients. They are voluntary offerings of gratitude to him for benefits received, and are
proofs strong as Holy Writ of his scientific attainments.
No one can read them without at once having confidence
in him, and we confidentially make the assertion, that
people afflicted with private or other diseases, will call
upon him in preference to any other physician in the
country. Read them carefully, ye that need medical assistance, and then loose no time in consulting him while
there is time left to cure you.
MARYSVILLE, June 10th, 1855.
R. J. C. YOUNG, Dear Sir—Please send me some of
the medicines you preseribed in my case. Ihavea
friend here who is troubled in exactly the same way that
Iwas. He has nightly emissions, ringing noise in his
head, weak back, loss of memory, and is generally debilitated ; he is discouraged and has not confidence enough
to enable him to call and see you, I told him how I was,
and that my friends all said I was in consumption, and
the doctors up here gave me up, and advised me ‘to go
home and die, but instead of going home, I called upon
you, and here I am as well as any of them and likely to
live a long time yet, with strength enough to work with
the strongest of them. Doctor, I will send every one to
you that looks to me as though he needed aphysician. It
shall not be my fault if any one dies for want of medical
treatment. I will do all I can to keep the afflicted away
from these pests of socicty, yclept professors and high
sounding titled men who, if the facts were known, are
men who left their country for their country’s good.
Publish this letter, Doctor, if you wish, and I hope some
of those that humbugged me may see it, and sleep bad
for one night, Truly yours,
GEO, DAVIDSON,
Grass VALLEY, June 3d, 1855.
EAR SIR—The last medicine you sent me has done
the business. I am now perfectly well, and wish to
give my testimony to the public in favor of your skill I
was troubled with a complication of diseases brought on
by that soul-destroying habit of self-pollution, and complaints caught by connection with bad persons, of the opposite sex. I have been treated by some of the best physicians as well as those quacks who infest the State, and
by them all given up as incurable ; but being advised by
a friend who had been benefitted by your scientific treatment, to call upon you. I did so, and feel grateful to him
for the information, but still more thankful to you for the
care and good advice you gave me, as well as the efficacious medicines you prescribed. If any of the afflicted
should see this, let them be sure that it is a voluntary offering in gratitude for the blessings of health received
from you, and also given with a fervent wish that it may
be of service to those suffering as I did; and now may
God bless you in your effort to lessen the suffering of the
human family, and may all good citizens assist you to
drive from the community those leeches that prey upon
the public by false pretensions of eminence in the medical world. Yours eternally,
To Dr. J.C Young. JOHN BURGESs.
PLACERVILLE, May 28th, 1855.
R. J. C. YounG—Dear Sir; Words cannot express
the gratitude I feel is due to you for the benefit I
have receivedf rom your truly invaluable course of treatment of my case while prescribing for me. I think I cannot justify myself without giving this small token of my
thankfulness and esteem, for you have been the means
of saving my life, and restoring to me that health which
Ihad so long despaired of again enjoying. I had for a
long time (four years) been troubled with that most dreadful scourge of young people, seminal weakness or noctural emissions which so weakened me both body and mind,
that I was obliged to give up mining altogether. I consulted one of the best physicians (so called,) in the mountain districts, and after a careful examination of my case
he gave me medicines. I continued under his treatment
for three months without receiving any benefit, in fact I
gtew worse from week to week, until at last I got discouraged and asked him for his opinion. I told him not
to fear to tell me the whole truth, for I should rather know
the worst at once, than to live in suspense. I bad lost
about thirty pounds of flesh, and that he at least could
not cure me and as I was then going on, death must soon
count me as one of its victims. This physician then told
me that my case was incurable ; that I had better not
take any more medicines, He said I was ina decline
which was fast tending to pulmonary consumption.
I then despaired of obtaining any relief, and saw that
unless something was done to mitigate the complaint that
I should be numbered withthe dead, or what is worse,
be a raving maniac. Happening to see one of your books
the Pocket sculapis, I made up my mind at once to call
and consult you with jhe determination of trying once
more to get relief if you would undertake the case. Oh
how thankful I am for that determination. I commenced
taking the medicine prescribed by you, and I am now,
through their healing powers, restored to perfect health.
shall not fail to recommend you to any of my friends that
require assistance, for a man that can cure a case as bad
as mine was, can cure every disease that flesh is heir to,
if there is life enough left in the system to build upon.
Reeeive my most sincere and hearfelt thauks and esteem, S. W. REIGHDEA.
San Frascisco, Jure 2d, 1855.
Dear Sir—I have not had one single fit since I
commenced taking your medicines; [am also gaining
strength every day. The trouble that I had, which was
the cause of the fits is also leaving me very fast. In fact,
I think I am entirely well, but if you think best, I will
take medicines a short time longer. It is only about two
months since I commenced taking your prescriptions, and
although you told me it would take from three to four
months, yet I feel perfectly well already. I feel sorry that
1 did not visit you at first, and not allow myself to be led
aceay by the vain boasting of those quacks that copy your
style of business, and thereby impose upon the public.—
They despoiled me of my money, and if I had not stopped taking their vile stuff, they would have robbed me of
my life also. Thanks to your superior medical skill I am
beyond danger, and I shall always consider you the savieur of my life.
Dear Dr.—Publish this if you consider it worth your
while, for I wish to proclaim to the world _~ worth,
that every one who needs a physician ma yw where
to call, and be sure of avoiding deceit and imposition.
Yours, till death, GEO. MARSHALL.

This Winc is acknowledged at the East to be the BEST
RESTORATIVE NOW IN USE where general prostration of the system exists, or derangement of the functions of the digestiveorgans, as it braces the nerves anew,

It will instantly cheek the ague in persons who have suffered for any length of time, from one day to twenty years
so that they need never have another chill, by continuing
its use according to directions.
It will immediately relieve all the distressing results of
billious or ague diseases, such as general debility, night

fag INVALU ABLESPECIPFIC, first introduced into
Visa, some fifty years since, secon beeame so well
known as a CERTAIN AND SPEEDY CURE, that in every
town and city not only on the Continent butalso in Great
Britain, the demand for it was se great, its merits se
astounding, that in less than one year from its introduetion it had supplanted all ether remedies, The Medical
Faculty of the different cities of Europe were compelled
to acknowledge its wonderful mastery over disease.—
Proprietors of other medicines, jealons of its sway, vainly
endeavored to stay its progress, Like grass before the
mower, their efforts fell to the gronnd ; and like fire on
the prairies, sweeping all before it, its onward march
became triumphant. It stood forth upon its own merits.
A discerning public saw, tried, and were convinced of ite
magical virtues.
‘The massive fortune acquired by Dr. Pareira, from
the sale of the above Medicine during the six years he
prepared it, alone bore witness to its miraculous merits.
At the death of the Doctor, the receipe was bequeathed
to his son, who lately introduced the remedy into the
United States. ‘The number of CuREs it has already
made is astonishing. Thousands and tens of thousands

BARBIER'S MEDICATED
Aromatie Scheidam Schnapps.
N PRESENTING THE ABOVE JUSTLY CELEbrated Cordial to the pubtic in its present form, the undersigned, sole proprictor, deems it necessary to address
a few words to Lis numerons patrons,
Ist. As will be seen below, this is no new invention,
for the first tine brought foward, nor ls it an imitation
of any other compound, but the application of acquired
knowledge,
2nd. The proprietor earnestly entreats the publie not
to beled away by calumuious reports, industriously cireulated by parties interested in underrating the valuable
medical qualities of his “‘Schnapps,”’ but to read this no
tice, and then try, and judge for themselves.
3d. The proprietor will detail the means by which he
beecaine possessed of the knowledge of the virtues of
of this preparation, the applicaton of whch has rendered
Schnapps so deservedly famous,
From time immemorial good and holy men have retired
from the world and its cares and tumults, and have passed the rest of their days in meditation, study, or the
practice of religious duties. Perhaps no occupation has
been more followed by these recluses, than the culling of
simples, the study of botany, and preparation of herbs
for medicinal purposes, and by no religious order or seet,
has this study been more pursued than by the Carthusian
monks, When, in A. D. 503, St. Francis d’ Assis, their
founder, returned from his missionary labors in Afriea
and Asia, he brought with him a profound knowledge of
botany; on his death bed he ineulcated the study of herbs
on his diciplins, and enjoined it as a part of a monastie
discipline, as a means of alleviating the pains and diseases of suffering humunity, and the result was, the production by the monks of the monastery of “La Grange
Chartreuse,” (one of the largest and most important institutions in France) of the world renowned Cordial that
bears their name. ‘‘Chartreuse,” composed entirely of
flowers and aromatic herbs of medicinal qualities.
An ancestor of the present proprieter was the superior of this religious order—by him the secret of the preparation was transmitted to his descendants It has
remained in the family, handed down from father to son,
and now for the first time applied to
Barbier’s Aromatic Scheidam Schnapps
And it is the judicious admixture of Chartreuse with
the medical property of Scheidam Schnapps that renders
Barbier’s preparation so eminently qualified to take the
lead of all other Schnapps—already favorably received.
It possesses all the virtues of Chartreuse, grafted on
the previously acknowledged beneficial qnalities of
Schnapps.
The public will thus preceive that this is no new preparation, no piratical imitation of any other so called
**Schnapps,”’ ephemeral in its nature, and deleterious
in its effects; but a precious discovery, the resnit of
years of study and experiment, appreciated by the
whole medical faculty of France, to be found in the mansion of the noble and the hut of the peasant, nourishing
childhood and sustaining the feeble limbs of old age,
shedding its blessings alike upon all, like charity, and
a fit monument of the good man who first sent into the
world, and it 1s this that renders Barbier’s Schnapps
suderiatively tonic, diuretic, anti-dyspeptic, and invigorating, grateful to the palate, and good forthe system,
and the undersigned alone possesses the secret of this
compound, and he or his agents alone can sell,
BARBIER’S AROMATIC SCHEIDAM SCHNAPPS,
For sale by all respectable Druggists and Jobbers in
California, and by A. BARBIER,
148 Washington street, San Francisco.
Notice.—Notwithstanding that the alcoholic nature
does in some respect prevail in these Schnapps, yet the
inebriating a— is so neutrallized by the admixture
of aromatic flowers and herbs, and its general effect is
so beneficial to the human frame, that the advocate of
temperance can hardly object to its use.
It is not a noxious compound, like many that are announced, but simily, as it is intended by the proprieto;
to be, a vegitable stomachic; a remedy against disease r
a pain killer, and as such, no family of whatever persuasion should be without it decl8-3m
