Geares AND WINE.—A correspondent
writing from Los Angeles to the S. F.
Bulletin, says :
In connection with the dry season we
are reminded that the crop of grapes
this year is more abundant than ever
before. The quantity sent into the
market exceeds that of any previous
year, as does also the quantity of wine
and aguadiente. A friend of mine himself a vintner, has taken the trouble to
go around to the different vineyards, and
obtain an approximate estimate of the
quantity manufactured. He estimates
the manufactured wine at 200,000 gal.
lons, and the quality is believed to be suerior tothat of any previous year.—
Now of the Californians rofused to give
him any information, becanse they did
not understand his object, and feared he
might be an assessor.
Way Inpians Are ‘T’rEATED.—The
following extract from the San Diego
Herald will convey some idea of the
treatment to which the Indians are subjected in some parts of the country. It
is not surprising that we have Indian
wars and bloody massacres:
“A lot of “greasers” had a balie the
other evening and as if that was not
enough for one night, they turned to
and stoned a poor Indian, belonging to
Mrs. SLarron, till he quietly lay down
and died. ‘This is considered fine sport,
and as our magistrates don’t trouble
themselves about such little matters,
the play will probably be repeated on
the next occaslon, with perhaps slight
variations.”
fe" A Cape Cod paper is enthusiastic
in its praise of the Fire Department of
that place, on the occasion of a late fire.
The “department” consists of a washtub,
seven pails and a large sized syringe.
