VatuaBLe OLp Doccments.—A a# Sacramento correspondent of the S. . F. Times says: “Up stairs, over the office of the Secretary of State, ina small room devoted to rublih and stationery, in the sleep. frmidable list of mal-eontents, some of ing room of one of the porters of the . Capitol, are stowed away in the wildest . confusion some of the most valuable paers in the State. They forma mass . > P He es ~. to move for fair play towards Kansas. Young Men’s Democratic Jey of documents which were transferred by Gen. Riley to the new State Govern. ment in 1849, at Monteiey, on the adop. tee, of Detroit, Michigan, has tion of the Constitution. These recor s are in Spanish, and date back as far 4 1719—one hundred = and Ciitty sine . ‘years ago! Among them may be found pronunciamentos from Old Spain and present Mexico; orders, decrees, e xpethe State ; custom house rece ipts, records, manifestos. ecclesiastical papers, judicial processes, private letters, and a } host of interesting and extremely valuable information, which some day or . other will be raked over by book-makers insearch of material for the early history of California. They are tied up . in tundles, and as there is no use for them, very little care is taken of them, though Col. Forman, Secretary of the Sate, will take good care they «re not destroyed or mutilated. These papers ought to be transferred to the office of the United States Surveyor General, . and I understand that Mr. Holliday of’ San Francisco is preparing a bill for that purpose. There is no proper place to keep them here, and as there are al-. ready a large quantity of similar records in the charge of Mr Mandeville, it would . add to their security to transfer them at once tohis keeping. ‘There is an immense quantity of old Spanish p: pars in } the Recorder’s oflice at Monterey which . might take the same course with pro. priety. Dearnh Unper Sincurar mes STANCES.—The Marysville News fur. nishes an account of a death which oeeurred under singular circumstances . recently, at a place called Delor Gulch: . Two men, John Thomas and Ephraim Maringer, made a bet of ten dollars as to who could hold his breath the longest. At the word both drew in their breath, but Maringer soon gave out; Thomas gave no sign or motion to show that he was aware of his having won the w: ager, but sat with his head bowed upon an. breast, still, immovable! “Halloa, Thomas, old fellow —you've won! What . are you setting there for? Get up and stand treat,’? some one said to him Not replying the company became my armed. They shook Aaa. raised him from the chair—he was dead! Dr. Springall was immediately called in, but life had become entirely extinct. Dr. Springall, assisted by Drs. Wells and Glanbein, held a post mortem ex: oetion upon the body of the deceased, result of which showed that the ts art . had been completely burst asunder, eausing death instauntly. Marinee ry expresses a deal of sorrow for the loss of his friend, cursing his folly and protes. tine he can never more be happy. > i Tuk Mormon Qvuestiox.—General . Allen, of the Marysvilie News, takes a . most virtuens view of the Mormon ques E tion. ‘The argument pri sented in the subjoined paragraph is irresistible : The po'ygamist not only violates a . great natural Jaw, but is, besides. a. beastly mi mopolist, wko robs his fellow men of their equitable rights. ‘To put . the whole matter in a_ nutshell . pose that a hundred men and a hundrey women were the inhabitants of an islan¢ inaccessible to strangers. Su ppose that . . ten of the men should each take ten . a RP would then be ninety men . condemned, by the monopolizing tyranny #f these ten, to the horrors of celibacy. This is as plain as the nose on Old . Block’s face, and needs no further amplification. 3 Senator Seward, in secret session . on the 10th of December gave the administration fits for the introduction into our Government of the Japanese sys. tem of espionage. The administration has a secret agent in San Francisco, one Kansas, and others seattered over ! the country wherever Federal officers extend It simply means when correct. Ix interpretted that the best of Democrats who of course and no other receive appointments, will bear watching. R. J. Watker on Kansas.—The letter of Walker, tendering his resignation . . J TOYS +: qf _ as Governor of Kansas, is a complete . WINTER ELCT ING . : vindication of his course in the unfortu} nate troubles in that Territory. The Democratic presses of this State can . find no room to publish it, or the speech of Douglas. Both these documents tell too many truths to be presented to the people and insure respect for the course of the President. Horrisie Dearu.—Inthe Crockett (Texas) Printer, of the 25th ult,, we find the following : Two cases of that most horrid of all deaths, burning, occured in our count y last week. The little son of Mrs. Dupree, aged six yenrs, was playing around where the men were killing hogs, for the . sealding of which a barrel was sunk in the ground, filled with boiling water, and a blanket thrown over it. The child fell on the barrel, and went head foremost into the scalding water—he was scalded to deathCouNTING THE TRE ASURE.—Monday, the arduous duty of counting the funds in the State. Treasury, was complied . with by the Governor and Secret: ary of . . State, the Attorney General being absent on business in the Supreme Court. It was a day of severe labor, as the entire amount had to be counted, which . was $479,917 58. Of this sum, $1.728 . was in silver, the balance in gold. {e Owing to business different from editorial duties we have not examined the accompanying documents to the Governor’s Message. At a glance we judge one of them needs a blast which it will get ifit prove necessary after a more thorough perusal. An exchange paper says forty-nine SHEREFF sALES. Zand Storage. “MAR y; SVILLE. .
