NEVADA JOURNAL
FRIDAY MORNING, Jan. 27, 1360.
eee
Tagatte.—Mr. and Mrs. James
Rtark and troupe played to good housvs up to their closing piece on Tuesday night last. The character of
Richelieu was sublimely enacted on
Friday night of last week. The perbonation of the great Cardia is
Btark’s forte. Efe was made for that
character. ~ :
On Saturday night Schiller’s thrilling drama of the Robbers was performed Wit success. Monday night
the piece was Othello, in which Stark
as ever figures to advantage. The
gerio-comedy of Heary IV, was enacted on Tuesday night. Stark makes
an excellent Falstaff. Indeed who
ean take the varieties of character
that Stark does and do them better ?
The company went to Grass Valley
ou Wednesday evening where they
are now playing to fine houses. We
have heard the wish expressed by
several of the best judges of stage
performances our town affords, that
Stark may return to our boards again
when his engagement at Grass Valley
haseeneiuded. He has by no means
tpfayed out” here. We unite in the
wish of better judges than ourselves,
‘and would be glad to welcome the
company to Nevada again. Their
return would be cordially greeted by
all true lovers of the drama.
Fearecx Accipent.—Two miners
were badly bruised af Walloupa on
Tuesday, in Dale & Webber’s claims,
under the follcwing circumstances:—
A tunnel into Brown’s Hill had been
in progress some months to reacii the
aforesaid claims, on which a shait 59
feet in depth had been sunk. After
reaching a length of 350 feet, the tunnel reached the vicinity of the shaft
‘on Tuesday. The shaft was full of
water. Suddenly the water burst
through into the tunnel and the mihers, named Wim. Maclefee and Wm.
Hill, were earsied With tremendous
force the whole length of the tunnel
wherethe water spreading out allowed
them to lodge. Dr. R. M. Hunt,
from whom we obtained the above
facts, reportsthe men to be very badly
lacerated, but not ina dang*rotis eondition.
New Silver Mines.-—Silver mines
‘ef extraordinary richness are reported to have been discovéred about
fifteen miles sotthward of Virgizia
‘ity. A gentleman living near the
Bpot wrote to a brother in this vicini‘ty to come over the mountains and
secure claims without delay, The request was complied with instanter. It
is rumored the lead discovered with
tival the cettbrated deposites at VirBinks city.
Nekraska.—The Nebraska Compa-~
ny took from their claims dst week
‘$11,706. Thecompany work 75 men
and the weekly expenses are not far
trom $2,000. The gold varies in valthe from $17,50 to $17,80 per oz.
Live Oak.—The Live Oak shaft
yielded last week $6,400. Forty men
fire ¢mployed and the weekly expen&e8 are about $1,300.
Music.—Mr, & Mrs. Grunwald, we
learn, aré preparing for a concert
tour throngh the $rincipal towne of
this county. They are decidediy
good in their line and cannot fail to
give pleasure to those who patrorize
hem. They give a concert at Artists’ Hall on Saturday evening next
Chinese Neié Year —Thé new year
of the Chinese began on Saturday
last, and was ushered in by innumerable fire crackers by the children of
the Central Flowery Land. Tables
were ét with’ Chinese delicacies, and,
other rites were ovserved. The festivities closed on Tuesday.
Pub. Docs—We are ixdébted to
Hon. 8. H. Chase for Gov. Weller’s
faréwell to public life or last annual
message; algo to S T. Curtis, C.
F. Smith and M. P. O'Connor, of
the Assembly, for ?atuablé State documents.
Nevada has contributed $101 to
the Washington monument—thus far
exceeding that of any other town in
the United States.
Fax on Spirit-ualists—Mr. Fattchilds of El Dorado, has taken steps
to compel'spiritual exhibitions to pay
licenses, the license to go to the State
Lunatic Asylum. The next move
WH he to prohibit the use of “ardent
spirils:”
Wooi.—T#e wodl grown in Mon~

fast becoming an importaitt'atticle of
export from Californiai
A wire suspension bridge has been
completed over the Mokelumne river,
at Poverty Bar. The span is one
hundred’ and.eighty feet.
_ Bayard ‘Taylor writes that the view
from Rincon or Telegraph’ Hill, in
San Fraiicisco will rival that of Genox, Napics or Constantinople.

fire thé = A Hight was discovered
undér a house of ill fame on Commercal street by Mr. Dickerman and
was yery promptly extinguished On
examination a quantity of shavings
were found under the house which had
been ignited. Officer Rider arrested
the probable cascal but in the absence of direct roof he was discharged, Oi Wednesday night the
blacksmith chop in the rear of the
store of J. S. Wall was found to have
a quantity of split wood init aud on
fire. The wood had evidently heen
carried in for the purpose of kindling
a fire.
A taste of Judge Lynch will surely
be given if the rascals are found
out.

Art IN Virainta.—The. apecial correspondents and artists of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated newspaper, lately at
Harper's Ferry, desire to return their
thanks to the citizens of Charlestown, ¥Va. for their as-iduous attetions. They say, ‘we were nev r
left alone for so much as five minutes
at atime ; and we should have been
happy to enjoy this pleasing state of
society much longer, but for a sudden
conviction that hanging by, a mob
might injure the graceful ptoportion
of our necks; that riding on a rail
might jolt our systems seriously out
of order, and that a coat of tar and
feathers would be infinitely unbecoming to our complexions. Being now
gafely on the soil of New York, we
‘ca do no less than apprise the anxious friends we have left behind us of
the intexesting fact, and regret the
immediate impossibility of renewing
our relations with themselves and
their affeetionate watchfulness.”
