Wuat Nextr!—A writer who is reviewed in the November number of
Blackwood’s Magazine, announces the
startling discovery, which will no doubt
shake the whole literary universe, that
Sir Walter Scott was not the autkor of
the “Waverly Novels.” ‘The main reason which he gives for thus ruthlessly
destroying the splendid fame of the
great magician, is, that Sir Walter Scott
had not time to write them, but that
they are the productions of his brother,
Mr. Frances Scott. and his sister-in-law,
Mrs. Elizabeth Scott, both of whom resided in Canada. The writer should
have been more merciful. It is terrible
thus to demolish such a posthumous reputation as Walter Scotts. What boots
it to possess the highest order of
genius, and to bequeath thoughts to
posterity, expecting them to earry ones
vame downto the latest generation, if,
after we are dead, such fellows disprove
all we had lone. when living.
Daniel Webster made a mistake when
he said “the past at least is secure” and
it may yet be shown that all his grand
speeches were written by his grandmother. We shall next expect to hear
disputed the claims of eminent literary
eharacters yet living. We shall-not be
surprised tolearn that Bulwer is amyth,
that Dickens is not Boz—and that some
beautiful Indian maiden, too modest. to
ask for fame herself, presented Longfellow with the original manuscript of
Sliawatha.
fue Leoistarure. — This body is

control of both branches, will justly be
held responsible for all that is done.—
Last winter the Amerieans had a large
majority in the Assembly, while the
Democrats had a small but effective majority in the Senate. Such being the
ease, the Democracy claimed half the
credit for all the acts which happened
te prove popular, while they endeavored
to throw all the blame onthe Americans,
for passing the few measures which did
not meet the approbation of the people.
For instance, they are now loud in their
denunciations of the State Prison bill, in
the face cf the fact that a majority of
the democratic Senators voted for it,
while only oze democratic assemblyman
-oted against it. ‘This year, judging
from past democratic legislation, they
will have to father worse bills than an y
that werepassed at the last session.
