A Human Wrece.—An eastern exshange gives the following dark picture
of the misfortemes of human life :
‘Two daysxgo a carriage stopped before the railwvay station in Lyons, and a
man in saifor’s dress alighting, took out
a living hunan trunk. The persons
standing near at first thought it was a
vietim of the war in the East, but such
was not the case. It appears that the
unfortunate burden which ke bore was
aman named Barnel, a native of St.
IEtienne, who in 1849 had gone to California. An explosion of gunpowder
liad thrown him up into the air to a considerable height, and when he-came to
the ground he was found to be in such
z state as to render amputation of both
his legs aud both his arms absolutely
necessary. ‘The man bore the operation with great fortitude, and in the
course of time recovered. Since then
the sailor has devoted himself with unfaring kindness to the unfortunate man,
who brings back with him a fortune of
200,000f., and intends: settling at St.
Etienne.
Deav Hores.—Who has not got one
or more of these red and: arisped leaves
in his heart? The battle of life is close
and hot, and men have no time to pause
by their wounded companions. Yet it
is pleasant to recall the earlier days of
our earthly pilgrimage, for the» friends
were friends, and were not always in too
great a hurry to stretch out a helping
band to a fellow-comrade.
They are gone, those: dreamy days;
their rainbow hopes have faded into the
sullen gray of the cloudy skies.
“When the lamp is broken
The light in the dust lies dead.”’
An Asstrrese CALCULATION.— Mr.
O’Flaherty undertook to tell how many
were at the party. The two Crogans
was one, myself was two, Mike Finn
was three, and—and—who the mischief
was four! Let me see (counting his
fingers)—the two Cogans was one, Mike
Finn was two, myself was three—and-—
be-dad there was four of us; but St.
Patrick couldn’t tell the name of the
other. Now it’s meself that have it:
Mike Finn was one, the two Crogans
was two, myself was.three —aud—and
— be the powers, I think there was but
three of us after all —Punch.
= An “Out-West” editor thus moralizes on the routine of editorial duties:
The poorest blind horse, in the most uncompromising bark-mill,has his moments
of relaxation. To him the sound of the
tannery bell, announcing noon, is a tocsin of joy, and he looks forward with
grateful anticipation to his prandial oats
and mill feed. The wearisome round is
stopped; the unlubricated gudgeons
quaver out a last squeak and cease their
complaining; the trace chain rattles
ever the animal’s back, and he attempts
a youthful canter as he moves off, a happy old horse. With him there are no
ant cipatory wees: he worksina circle,
but a certain number of turns are sure
to bring a respite. But with the editor
it is otherwise ; his life is, as Mantilini
feelingly remarks, “one dem’d grind ;”
his mrachine never stops. Hot weather,
headaches, sickness at home are no relief to his perpetual routine—for the paper must come out, and “ copy must be
furnished,”
SKELETON oF A GianT Founp.—A
few days since some workman found a
ekeleton on the grounds of Sheriff Wick
man, at Wheeling, Va., which was that
“aman, and according to the Wheeling Times, must have been, in life, ten
feet nine inches im length! The jaws
and teeth were as large as those of a
horse.
tc “My dear madam,” said a doctor

the dose you left me.”

YANKEE LocomotTion.—The London

whether pleasure or profit, it is the same.

Dear Sir: Suchis the thankfulness I feel for the preservation of my health of both body and mind, and I believe of my life, that L hope I will not be considered intrusive in tendering my thankful acknowledgments for
restorihg-me to health and making my life a boon worth
preserving, when it had become a burthen too great for
me to bear. Victim as I was to vice that had underminded my constitution, and developed a train of uervous
symptoms, such as nervous debility, headache, distressing timidity, self-distrust, dizziness, Jove of solitude, loss
of strength and energy, which had made my waking moments wretched and my sleep unrefreshing and was fast
bringing me to the grave ; but thanks to your skill Iam
restored to health, vigor and energy. Hoping to gtide
others where they may find relief, you have my permission to make this public.

Dr. L. J. Czapkay—Sir : I have used the last of your

very well, except thatI have not entirely got my strength
vet, but seou will with the appetite I have, It is just
three weeks, you may recollect, since I called at your Institute, with my constitution as I thought, entirely bro‘ken, and never thought you would be able to cure me
perfectly, but thought yoa might be able to do something
to ease the pain in ms back and head and strengthen
my limbs, which were so weak that they would almost
give way under me when I walked, and to strengthen
my nerves so that I would not get excited and tremble at
every little thing. Ifow that yo . know what I expected,
you nay jutge of my satisfaction at my complete recovery from those symptoms, and the removal of those
splotches and sores from my skin and the ulcers from my
throat ; and the entire stoppage of those emissions which
you said were principally the cause of my sickness. I
can hardly tell you which is the greatest, my joy or my
surprise, for except not having fully got my strength, I
feel as well as any man can feel.
Enclosed I send you twenty dollars over your charge,

will be benefitted, you may put this letter in all the

PRomr7E® by m honest desire of my heart, I wish to
lay before the public a case which deserves a light commendation, not only as an act of sciemtifie ski, but that
of humanity, also." About two years ago, I suddenly and
from causes unknown to me, was seized With a fit of Epilepsy, which oWing fo my inadilit to meet the expenses
consequent apon a thorough medical treatment, and the
discouragement which I met with on attempting it. soon
bebome such (as I was then led to believe,) as to defy the
skill of a physician. Iwas frequently, while in pursuit o
my calling, thrown down to the ground without the slight, est warning, and althongh insenkible to the agonies, I yet
‘despised the miseries of my Ilfe, and soon learned to look
upon those who would render me assistance or shelter me
from dager as enemics who sought to prolong the misery
of my existence. While in this State, and haviug previons to my afflictions tasted the sweets of life, I once
more was induced to attempt secking aid of a physician,
and, by recommendation, called on Dr. L. J. Czapkay. I
told him my cirenmstances, and my inability to reward
him for his services—regardless of which, however, he at
ofce ufMtlertook my case, and with the blessing of God, I
was once more restored to perfect heaith. Unable to reward him for the boon which I enjoy at present, and yet
conscious of my indebtedness, I consider it due to ntyself
and to all afflicted, to make the case public, in order that

Important
O Miners, Travellers, Ete. There is no malady of
deeper importanee, cither in a medical or moral point
of view, to which the human family 1s more liable than
that arising from impure connections.
As a medical. man it is the @mty of every physician to
look at diseases as it affects health and life, and his sole
object should be to mitigate, as far as lies in his power,
the bodily suffering. Human nature at best is but frail,
all are liable to misfortune.
Of all the ills that affect man none are mere terrible
than those of a private nature. Dreadful as itis in the
person who contracts it, frightful as are its ravages upon
his constitution, ending frequently in destruction and a
loathsome grave, it becomes of still greater importance
when it is transmitted to mnecent offspring. Such being
the case hew necessary it becomes that every one having
the least reason to fear that they have contracted the dis
ease, should attend to it once by consulting seme physician, whose respectability and education enables him to
warrant a safe, speedy and permanent cure. In accordance with this necessity, Dr. Young feels called upon to
state that, by long study and extensive practice, he has
become perfect master of all these di es which come
under the denomination of venereal, and having paid
more attention to that one branch than any other physician in the United States, he feels himself bettor qualified
to treat them,
Syphilis in all its forms such as Ulcers,
Swelling in the
eous Eruptions, Uleerations, Tertuary
in Children, Mercurial Syphilitie Affect
‘ictures, False Passages, Inflar
Bladder and Prostrate Glands, Excoriations, Tumors, Po
tules, ete. areas familiar to him as the most common
things of daily observation.
The Doctor effects a cure in recent cases in a few days
and finds no difficulty in curing those of long duration.
without submitting the patient to such treatment as will
draw upon him the slighest suspicion, or oblige hin t
neglect his business, whether within doors or without.—
The diet need not be changed, except in cases of severe
inflammation. There are in California, patients [amount
ing to over two thousand in the past year] that could furnish proof this : but these are matters that require the
nicest secrecy, which he always preserves.

R. J. ©. YOUNG, Dear Sir—Please send me some of
the medicines you preseribed in my case. Lhavea
friend here who is troubled in exactly the same way that
Iwas. He has nightly emissions, ringing noise in his
head, weak back, loss of memory, and is generally debilitated ; he is discouraged and has not contidence enough
to enable him to call and see you, I told him how I was,
and that my friends all said I was in conswmption, and
the doctors up here gave me up, and advised me to go
home and die, but instead of going home, I called npon
you, aud here I am as well as any of them and likely to
live a long thne yet, with strength enongh to work with
the strongest of them. Doctor, I will send e¥xerx one to
you that looks to me as though he sweded aphysician. It
shall not be my fault if any one dies for want of medical
treatment. I will do all I can to keep the afflicted away
from these pests of society, yclept professors and high
men who left their country for their country’s good.
Publish this letter, Doctor, if you wish, and I hope some
of those that humbugged me may see it, and sleep bad
for one night. Truly yours,
GEO. DAVIDSON,
Grass VALLEY, June 34d, 1855.
EAR SIR—The last medicine you sent me has done
the business. I am now perfectly well, and wish to
give ny testimony to the public in favor of your skill. I
was troubled with a complication of diseases brought on
by that soul-destroying habit of self-pollution, and complaints caught by connection with bad persons, of the opite sex. I have been treated by some of the best physicians as well as those quacks who infest the State, and
by them all given up as incurable ; but being advised by
a friend who had been benetitted by your scientitic treatment, to call upon you. I did so, and feel grateful to him
for the information, but still more thankful to you for the
care and good advice you gave me, as well as the eflicacious medicines you prescribed. If any of the afflicted
should see this, let them be sure that it is a voluntary offering in gratitude for the blessings of health received
from you, and also given with @ fervent wish that it may
be of service to those suffering as I did; and now may
God bless you in your effort to lessen the suffering of the
human family, and may all good citizens assist you to
drive from the community those leeches that prey upon
the public by false pretensions of eminence in the medieal world. Yours eternally,
To Dr. J. C Young. JOHN BURGESS.
PLACERVILEF, May 28th, 1855.
R. B. ©. YoUNG—Dear Sir; Words cannot express
the-gratitude I feeb & due to you for the benefit I
have receivedé rom your truly invaluable course of treatment of my case while preseribing for me. I think I cannot justify myself without giving this small token of my
thankfulness and esteem, for you have been the means
of saving my life, and restoring to me that health which
Ihad so long despaired of again enjoying. I had for a
long time (four years) been troubled with that most dreadful scourge of young people, seminal weakness or noctural emissions which so weakened me both body and mind,
that I was obliged to give up mining altogether. 1 consulted one of the best physicians (so called.) in the mountain districts, and after a careful examination of my case
he gave me medicines. [ continued under his treatment
for three months without receiving any bencfit, in fact I
grew worse from week to week, until at last I got discouraged and asked him for his opinion. I told him not
to fear to tell me the whole truth, for I should rather know
the worst at once, than to live in suspense. I had lost
about thirty pounds of flesh, and that he at least could
not cure me and as I was then going on, death must soon
count me as one of its victims. This physician then told
me that my case was incurable ; that I had better not
take any more medicines. He said I was ina decline
which was fast tending to pulmonary consumption.
I then despaired of obtaining any relief, and saw that
unless something was done to mitigate the complaint that
I should be numbered withthe dead, or whatis worse,
be a raving maniac. Happening to sce one of your books
the Pocket sculapis, I made up my mind at once to call
and consult you with jhe determination of trying once
more to get relief if you would undertake the case. Oh
how thankful I am for that determination. 1 commenced
taking the medicine prescribed by you, and I am now,
through their healing powers, restored to perfect health.
shall not fail to recommend you to any of my friends that
require assistance, for a man that ean cure a case as bad
as mine was, can cure every disease that flesh is heir to,
if there is life enough left in the system to build upon.
Receive my most sincere and ‘hearfelt thauks and es8S. W. REIGHDEA.

Dear Sir—I have not had one single -fit
commenced taking your medicines ; Iam also gaining
strength every day. The trouble that I had, which was
the cause of the fits is also leaving me very fast. Ty fact,
I think I am entirely well. brt i¢ you think best, 1 will
take medicines a short time longer. It is only about two
months since I commenced taking your prescriptions, and
although you told me it would take from three to four
months, yet I feel perfeetly well already. 1 feel sorry that
I did not visit you at first, and not allow myself to be led
aceay by the vain boasting of those quacks that eopy your
style of business, and thereby impose upon the publie.——They despoi me of my money, and if I had not stopped taking their vile stuff, they weuld have robbed me of
my life also. Thanks to your superior medical skill I am
beyond danger, and I shall always consider you the savieur of my life.
Dear Dr—Publish this if you consider it worth your
while, for I wish to proclaim to the world your worth,
that every one who needs a physician may know where
to eall, and be sure of avoiding deceit and imposition,

BARBIER'S MEDICATED

Aromatic Scheidam Schnapps.
N PRESENTING THE ABOVE JUSTLY CELEbra‘ed Cordial to the pubtie in its present form, the undersignued, sole proprietor, deems it necessary to adress
a few words to Lis numerous patrons.
Wt. As will be seen below, this is no new invention,
for the first time brought foward, nor Is it an imitation
of avy other compound, but the application of acquired
knowledge,
2nd. The proprietor carnestly entreats the public not
to be led away by calumnious reports, industriously cireuInted by parties inte-este . in underrating the valuable
medical qualities of his ‘‘Schnapps,”’ but to read this no
tice, and thea try, and judge f or themselves,
3d. The proprietor will deiail the means by which he
became possessed of the knowledge of the virtues of ~EEPS constantlyon hand, at the American Exchange
of this preparation, the appliccton of whch has rende-ed
Schnapps so deservedly famous,
From time immeimorial good and holy men have retired
from the world and its cares and tumults, and have passed the rest of their days in meditatio’. study, or the
practice of religious duties, Perhaps ro occupation has
been more followed by these recluses, than the eulling of
simples, the study of botany, and preparation of herbs
for medicinal purposes, and by no religious order or sect,
has this study been more pursued than by the Carthusian
monks,
founder, returned from his mission’ ry labors in Africa
and Asi, he brought with him a p-ofound knowledge of . Real Estate, and every description of property
botany; on his death bed he ineulcated the study of herbs
on his diciplins, and enjoined it as a part ef a monastic
discipline, as a means of alleviating the paias and diseases of suffering humanity, and the result was, the production by the monks of the mopastery of “La Grange
Chartreuse,” (one of the largest 2.4 most important institutions in France) of the world renowned Cordial that . General Dealers in Hardware, Iron, Stepl,
bears their name. ‘‘Charivease,” composed entir ly of
flowers and aromatic herbs of medicinal qualities.
An ancestor of the present propricter was the supcrior of this religious order—by him the secret of the preparation was transmitted to his descendants It has
remained in the family, handed down from father to son,
and now for the first time applied to
Barbier’s Aromatic Scheidam Schnapps. WWENTER & G&G R OCE,
And it is the judicious admixture of Chartreuse with
the medical property of-Scheidam Schnapps that renders
Barbier’s preparation so eminently qualified to take the
lead of all other Schnapps—already favorably received.
It possesses all the virtues of Chartreuse, grafted on
the previously acknowledged beneficial qnalities of
Schnapps. _
The public will thus preeeive that this is no new preparation, no piratical imitation of any other so called
*Schnapps,’? ephemeralin its mature, and deleterious
in its effects; but a precious discovery, the result of
years of study and cxperiment, appreciated by the
whole medical faculty of France, to be found in the mansion of the noble and the hut of the peasant, nourishing
childhood and sustaining the feeble limbs of old age,
shedding its blessings alike upon all, like charity, and
a fit monument of the good man who first sent into the
world, and it ls this that renders Barbier’s Schnapps
suderlatively tonic, diuretic, anti-dyspeptic, and invigorating, grateful to the palate, and good forthe system,
and the undersigned alone possesses the secret of this
compound, and he or his agents alone can sell,
BARBIER’S AROMATIC SCHEIDAM SCHNAPPS,
For sale by all respectable Druggists and Jobbers in
California, and by A. BARBIER,

Notice.—Notwithstanding that the alcoholic natnre
does in some respect prevail in these Schnapps, yet the
inebriating quality is so neutrallized by the admixture
of aromatic tlowers and herbs, and its general effect is
so beneficial to the human frame, that the advocate of
temperance can hardly object to its use.
It is not a noxious compound, like many that are announced, but simily, as it isintended by the proprieto ;
to be, a vegitable stomachie; a remedy against disease r
a pain killer, and as such, no family of whatever persuasion should be without 14 decl18-3m
