Mcraper 1n Cataveras County.—
A man, called Scotch Mack, was killed
Inst Tuesday evening, at Indian Gulch,
near San Antonio, Calaveras county. by
William Lamott. The affair was the result of a drunken carousal. Lamott
went, next morning, and found the dead
body of Mack in the bushes, and reported to the authorities. The skull of the
deceased was broken in and his brains
exuding. Beside the body lay the implement with which the deed was done
—a large pine club, all clotted with
blood. Lamott was examined, and committed on acharge of murder.
Peacues AGatn.—Thanks are again
tendered to Mr. G. H. Beach, the proprietor of the “New England Orchard,”
Marysville, for a box of the finest peaches of a variety of his own raising styled,
‘‘Beach’s Mammoth Early.” The variety is certainly one of the most valuable in the State. The truth is, while it
is the most luscious, it is very beautiful
and uncommonly large for so early a
peach —its first ripening being about .
the Ist of July. A sight ofa collection
of this variety of peach could not fail
to eure homesickness in its most chronic
form. One glance and you would forget the flesh pots of Egypt forever. If
any of our friendszare longing for home
and disparaging the claims of California to their regard, Ict them try the
sight, taste and capital enjoyment of
‘Beach’s Mammoth Early.” They will
complain no longer of an “aching void .
the world can never fill.”
The types made us say last week
that the New England Orchard would
turn out three hundred trees of the variety. Itshould have been three thousand. H. A. Hawkins is the agent for
this place and Grass Valley.

S* There isan opinion prevalent in
this office that MceGinagen & Downey .
keep mighty good champaigne. The
idea has grown out of a glorious wet the
typos indulged in yesterday atthe expense of the aforesaidfirm. The soggy
old boy at the case was stuck after
streaks of ancient mythology immediately and talked inecherently of ambrosia and nectar,—food and drink of immortal gods—comparing Fosters’ peach.
es favorably with the former and McG
& D’s champaigne with the later.
McGinagen & Downey have opened
a saloon, corner of Broad and Commercial streets. Foster can be found at his
fruit depot next doorto American Exchange, Main street.

will find Bob McGrath ready and waiting at Tom Holmes’ saloon on Broad

Give ’em a call, for thar’s the place to
“get your money back.”
zine man honored us with a call on Wednesday last. No wonder he gets up a
good magazine, he js a capital gentleman himself.
Goop Luck.—A gentleman arrived in
this city afew weeks since with fifty
dollars in his pocket, and sought a place .
to dig immediately. He located on

with $5,500 on his way to the Atlantic

To the Citizens of California!
IFPCAUTION! 4
AM INFORMED that various liquor-mixers of New
York, Boston, and San Francisco, are extensively engaged in putting up in square bottles, under various titles, cheap imitations of my long established and renowned
Wolfe’s Scheidam Aromatic Schnapps.
Which adulterated compounds are intended to scll in
California against my genuine article. .
My object is toannounce thatI have recently established an AGENCY IN SAN FRANCISCO for supplying
the State and Oregon with my Schnapps. and that hereafter I will always keep said agency supplied with a
large stock ; so that respectable druggists and liquordealers throughout California can always supply themselves at a regular price, merely enough over the New
York price to cover cost of freight and charges; thus
avoiding complaint as heretofere, of occasional searcity
and extreme high price
Itis now many years since I first imported these
£chnappsfrom the celebrated distillery in “cheidam, Hol
land. in which I am interested. It is now conceded that
no Gin was ever imported into this country which has
approached my Schnapps in regard to PU RIT Y,
HEAL PHFULNESS, and EXQUISITE AROMA or flavor. This Ielaim, and for proof, point to their universal popularity and the immense and increasing consumption by all classes, north and south, east and west, comprisingthe temperance people, medical faculty, &c., to
such an extent that my establishment, packing the enormous quantity of 8,000 botdes per day, is barely able to
fill its orders. “
Also, the Wolfe’s Schnapps have been analyzed by
the most celebrated Chemists, Drs. Mott and Deck, of
New York, and others who will certify that they are a
Perfectly Pure Medical Tonic.
Invalnable asa femedy against Bad Water, Gravel, Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Debility, &c. They also certify
that they found my Schnapps to be free from Arnylie
Alcohol or Fusil Oil,an exceedingly hurtful ingredient,
fonndin allcommon Gin, which Pr. Mott describes as
fetid, acrid, and Asthmatical and productng irreparable
effects upon the nerves and stomach.’ The certificates
also prove my Schnapps perfectly clear of “the second
or heavier Essential Oit or Juniper, also a dangerous
component, produced by the over distillation practiced
to increase the quantity in making ordinary Gin.”
These statements are made with a view to invite com
parison in California between the genuine Welfe’s
Schnapps, and tie various brands of bogus imitations,
mixe l, doctere 1 up, or sweetened Gin; in square, black
boitles, (imtation of my style of bottles) under different
names and labels, whether marked London, Ge: many,
Holland Scheidam ~chnapps. &c., in_ infinite veriety—
confident that the trial will result in California just as it
has fong since done in all the older States, in repudiating all the bogus, unwholesome imitations referred to,
and the complete triumph of my pure Scheidam
Schnapps.
I desire briefly to notice two facts which have lately
added largely to the use of Wolfe's Schnapps is the city
of New York and elsewhere. lst, Pure French Brandy
it is now almost impossible to obtain—nearly all the
brandy imported from France being American raw spirits sent there, made into brandy. and shipped back again
2d, Many people are abandoning the use of American
whisky, brandy ani gin, since it has been discovered
that STRYCHNINE, a deadly poison, is in use at the
west in distilling, thereby increasing the yield of liquor
about one-third.
In conclusion, 1 will say to all who desire a wholesome,
agreeable tonic and stimulant, give a fair trial to
