aL. woe a a a Pearis.—The N. Y. Herald has the following :—We publish in another place a graphic account of the pearl fishery in New Jersey. That the muddy brooks of our neighbors are producing real pearls is no hoax, but a veritable truth, as the well filled purses of some of the muscle diggers will testify. The principal places where the pearl growing muscles have been found are the Great Notch brook, the Rock road brook, and Hoboken stream; but this species of shell fish, containing pearls of greater or less size, de not appear to be confined to these alone. ‘They are said to be found in all the brooks and rivulets in Bergen county, if not in all of the entire northern part of the State. This discovery has of course created an immense excitement throughout the neighboring districts of New Jersey. The people are rushing to the brooks to dig for pearls. One curious feature of the matter is, that pearls have been frequently found in these streams for the last half century, and sometimes sold, but more frequently lost or thrown away, the people being entirely ignorant of their nature and value. Tue NationaL ScuootMAsTeR.— When our Republic rose, Noah Webster beeame its schoolmaster. There had never been a great nation with a universal language without dialeets. The Yorkshireman cannot now talk with a man from Cornwall. The peasant of the Liguarian Appenines, drives his goats home at evening, over hills that looked down on the six provinces, none of whose dialects hecan speak. Here, 5,006 miles change not the sound of a word. Around every fireside, and from every tribune, in every field of labor and every factory of toil, is heard this same tongue. We owe it to Webster. He has done for us more than Alfred did for England, or Cadmus for Greece. His books have educated three generations. They are forever rultiplying his innumerable army of thinkers, who will transmit his name from age to age. ik Human affections are the leaves, the foliage of our being—they catch every breath, and in the burden and heat of the day they make music and metion ‘in a sultry world.
