Towtixson.—Although . @ue notice was given of this gentlemen's lecture at the Court hotise, on Sunday last, yet, we ate sorry to say, his audience was exceedingly slim. The address was intended particularly for the ladies, but not a solitary female woman was present. And, although the eloquent sentences and finished diction of the apeaker were roundly applauded by the majority of the audience, we regret the necessity of saying that a few gentlemen (?) present (printipally from the lower ond of Main street) treated the venerable orator with—not to put too fine a point upon it—a want of due respect. . Tt seems that when, in these troublesome times, an aged and eminent citizen volunteers . his advice to the people, the latter ought io listen to his views, and endeavor to profit by . his counsels. We think, however, that the . Major's influence would be greater, if he would . putto you, as a man, whether a town of the = Se Correspondence of the Journal. Ovrea, June 23d, 1861. What with news of preparations for war, telegraphic dispatches, sensation items fights, arrests, trials, &c., from the Atlautic states, and accounts of Union meetings, Union flag raisings, and Union Conventions here at home, Omega has been almost entirely overlooked, and forgotten by reporters and letter writers. Even “Juniper,” no longer flavors the demijohn of the Transzript, @ad althongha northern plant, fumes and schnapps at the Union, (the Sacramento Union is meant) just as though it was net a great democratic institution, honest, reliable, and patriotic, and not just now engaged in the laudable enterprize, of rebuilding the zion of democracy, and gathering in the lost sheep: of the scattered tribes. Now, Mr. Editor, it is importance, enterprise, and population of Omega, is to remain in obscurity, and silence, while other towns are blowing their trumpets and tooting their horns all about their resources patriotism, &c.; for is not the population of the town of Omega numbered at five hundred? and is there not as many as twenty five or thirty citizens who have wives, more than half of whom have chilire:? certainly it is. To be sure there Of course they have. And has there not been five babies born within as many months; three boy babies, and two girl babies, three of them on successive days one after the other? and are they not the very pictures, of their Pa, or their Ma, There has. are. . They are. It might be interesting, and important, to the take more pains to adapt his ideas and lan. public to be advised somewhat, as tothe mining guage to the comprehension of the masses. Ricord is an illustri ousexample, a shining light among the philosophical stars ofhis 4 in Europe, and Dr. Czapkay has fully equalled him in this country, as a proof of which, the Philadelphia College of Medicine complimented him with a Diploma, and the honorary aD RUNDEM degree. Cne thing about the Major we admire—the persixtence with which ke follows up a determined plan. He gave notice that he would ad-j} dress the “ Ladies ;” he prepared his speech for the ‘ Ladies,” and he delivered it to the “ Ladies,” although there was nota single individwal of that particular sex in the room. It took . a powerful imagination to convert any one of . the ugly customers present inte a specimen of . Lawler’s,and many others on Diamond Creek, . female grace and beauty: but the Major—mene . aqua in ardnis—accomplished it. Tetescoric Virws.—Iundreds of our citi. zens have been delighted during the last few evenings by looking into other worlds through George Mieira’steleseape. Seen through this . fine instrument, Jupiter oxpands into immense proportions, and Saturn displays her hoops. But the “yellow Moon ” is a sight worth secing When you come te examine her closely by aid of this eye-helper, ycu find that “ distance lends enchantment &c.” and that she dont look “so modest all the while” as when Byron saw her smiling on mischief. She bas a bold rough eLeek, and looks like a hardened sinner; also like hardened pewter that has beeu melted onto a frozen pond. We are sorry that we examined her s> minutely. We always had great respect for the Moon. Weused to grow romantic under her mellow glanees. Wo “rit a pome’”’ to the Moon, ouce, when we wero a boy, calling her “silver Queen of the night,” and sich like. . Catch n« taking such a seragyled-faced coneern for a theme, again, will ye? HATISPACTORILY ARRANGED.—For some days . past it was greatly feared by our citizens that a hostile meeting would take place between a noted politician of this city, and a well known geutieman who was an officer in the army that went to the Washoe Indian war. py to inform the public that the delicate quesWeare haptions involved in this most unhappy affair have, . through great exertions on the part of their factorily arranged. We are sorry, however to learn that some meddlesome persons have ween impeaching the courage of the ex-military gentleman above roferred to, and insinuating that he has como out of the affair with his Loner slightly tarnished. This is all wrong, and uafounded; and, if, persisted in, may remew the difficulty and cause it toend in blood, The lives of raluable citizens are too sacred te be thus trifled with. Curar Jony.—This establishment, at the corner of Pine and Commercial streets, contains, we suppose, as fine an assortment of goods as ean Le found anywhere in the State, out of San Francisco. The man who goes there to get any thing te put on his person, from the crewn of his head to the sole of his foot, and ean’t please himrelf, either as to the quality of. the article, or its price, will never be contented with anythiog in this world. Axotaxr Frac.—The patriotic !adies of Piety Will made up a purse among themselves on . ° i] Friday last, purchased the material and made a oe 4 Se : flag which was hoisted cn Monday last. The . ATER AxD GAs.—Our streets have present . flag is eighteen feet in length by twelve in breadth, and gaily floats from the top of a tree en the hill. The ladies of that locality are all} for the Union. Tae 4th Ar Ownca.—Mr. G. Pierce, we un. derstand will give-a grand bill at Omega, on the coming National Anniversary. The preparations aremade on a grand scale and a glotious time is anticipated. The ladies and gen. . resources, and business prospects, of this town. . \ that heretofore were comparatively worthless, by the new and impreved methods of working are now paying well. . . Matteson’s Water Power Derrick is a great . improvement in labor saving. Nearly all the company’s who have their claims opened, are runping and making money; among which can . be mentioned, Marvins’, Perkins,’ Halegan’s Payne's, Bates & Shafer, Palmer's, Pierce's, Sherbourne’s, Merrill’s &c. The claims of Templar and Colbert, Kirtly & Wilson, and ars, payihg largely this season, Kelsie & Co’ have struck rich pay at the head of Scotchman’s Creek; it is thought to be the outcropings of a blue lead, runniug back into the main ridge. Among the miners who still have surface claims, Halverson & Co., and M. Forest are the principal company’s whose claims have paid clear of all expense, from six to twenty dollars per day to the hand, all this season thus far. The town supports the usual amount of business in the line of mechanics, stores, hotels, restaurants, saloons, markets, &e,; two lines of express. ,The town is frequently visited by distinguished citizens of the County and State, who are traveling for pleasure, information, or Last week a celebrated democratic member of the Nevada bar, on atour through, the county, stayed over right in Omega, the . briefnees of hia visit precluded the possibility on business. of any public demonstrations, as also at Wash. ington; but at Alpha, these who bad the honor of attending the receyt on and Ball, speak of it . as a brilliant affair. Some enthusiastic individuals, are raising a brigade . here for the use of the State, to keep Great . Britain from taking San Francisco. They have . thirty already. The balance will be filled up in . a few days, no doubt. The country may rest assured that the great big hoart of Omega . throbs, beats and palpitates for the Union and the Constitution. DERRICK. His lectures are re. fined, eloquent, grand and intellectual in the . highest degree: We extract the following paragraph from a pritaté letter from a lady showing; that the war spirit is raging there.
