New York, August I, 1858. To WHOMIT May CONCERN ;—This certifies that Dr. Barlow J. Smith isa graduate of the New York Hygeio Therapeutic College, which college has a regular charter from the Legislature of the State. and is authorized to grant Diplomas conferring on its students all and the same privileges and immunitiesin relation to the practice of the healing art, that are conferred by the Diplomas of any Allopathic or other Medical College in this country. Or Smith has also devoted much attention to Phrenology, especially in its connections with Physiology and Pathology, a portion of the time under the instructions of Fowler & Wells of this clty, and has labored successfully as a teacher and lecturer on these snbj ects. R. T. TRALL,M. D. Principal N. Y. Hygeio Therapeutic College COMPLIMENTARY RESOLUTIONS, At the close of a course of ten lectures on Phrenology aud Physiology b Dr. Barlow J.Smith, at the Hygeio Medical College, N Y. the following resolutions were unanimously adopted by the medical class, with the request for their publication in the Phrenological and Water Cure Journals ; Whereas, We have listened with pleasure and profit to a course of lectures by our fellow student. Dr. B. J. Smith on Phrenology and Physiology, and as we deem the sci ence of Phrenology as connected with Physiology, of the utmest importance, therefore, Resolved, That in Dr. Smith we recognize a teacher of whoin this College may well be proud, and that he is capable of reficcting honor upon the sciences he so ably demonstrates. 5 Resojved, That his discoveries in Physiology claim our highest attentionand regard as reformers and students of nature. Resolved, That we highly appreciate Dr. Smith's application of Phrenology to the stuc y and diagnosis of disease ; and thatas students of mecipine we have derived principles of diagnosis which are of inestimable value being enabled to determine, from an examination of the hea {,to what particular disease a personis preposed. Resolved, That as the principles of Phrenology by which Dr. Smith determines the healthy or diseased condition of the body are original, not having been claimed or set forth by any other individual, he deserves great eredit for their discovery. Resolved, That as Dr. Smith intends to leave our in stitution soon for a permanent residence in California, with a view to the dissemination of these truths and the principles of Hygiene, as taught at this College, we hoartily recommend him to the friends of our cause Wherever he may locate. {Signed,] A. Homeopathy or Movement cure.—Of Motorprathy, itis only necessary to say here that Peter Henry Ling, the originator of this system was a Swede, and that his system has been practised in Swedenin an institution sustained by Government, for nearly forty years, and that it has received the highest commendations from several governments, commissions of inquiry, and physicians of the highest standing. Bayard Taylor who was treatedin the institution at Stockholm, thus speaks of it: “Ling’s system not only aims at reducing to ascience the muscular development ef the body, but by means of both active and pastive movements, at reaching the seat of the disease and stimulating the various organs of the body ina healthy actionIn the former ofthese, Ling has certainly succeeded ; thereisnoother system of muscular traming that will bear comparison with his. During the timeof my attendance I could not help but notice the effect of Tediscipline upon the patients, especially the children, yeth weak and Ilstless gradually strengthened them selves ; the pale and sallow took color and lively expres sion ; the crippled and paralytic recovered the use of their limbs—in short, all with the few exception of a few hypocondriaes, exhibited very marked improvement,— There was no voluntary exercise, everybody was being exercised upon. The resultof my observations and experience was that Ling’s system of physical education is undoubtedly the best in the world, and that as a remedial agent in ail cases of congenital weakness or deformity, as well as for these diseascs which arise from deranged circulation, its value can scarcely be over-estimated,” There are several institutions in the United States established upon this system, of which we will mention that of Charles F. Taylor, M. D. in New York city, the celebrated institution of Dr. Hamilton, of Rochester, N. Y. (exclusively for women) and that of Dr. Haisted, at Round Hill, Northampton, Mass. HYDROPATHY. The success and advantages of Hydropathy over the old system of poisonous drug medication are well known Inthe use of Water, Dr. Smith does not rely upon Cold water alone, but upon water of all temperatures, according to the strength of thepatient and the nature ef the disease, in connection with all other hygienic conditions, such as Air, Electricity, Diet, Rest, Fxercise, ete. Neither does he believe water will ‘‘wash out all diseases,” as some Allopaths are ignorant or malicions enough tocharge upon Hydropathists ; but as water enters more largely intothe constituents of the body than all other elements combined—the new born infant being composed of about NINETY per cent. of water, the adult of about EIGHTY per Cent., and as water forms about NINETY parts of one hundred of the blood, the fluid which supplies every part with its vitality—consequently the human system has more affinity with water and yields morereadily to its influence than to any and all other elements known to the materia medica. Those who have seenits power and given it a fair trial never go BACK todrugs. Wherever there is disease, there is generally inflammation, and what will absorb heat soreadly and surely as water? You who are sick, ask yourtelves ifthere CAN be any affinity ip cng hosel systems and poisonous drugs. A few years since there was not an advocate of Hy@ropathy, now there are hundreds of thousands in the United Statesand Europe to testify in tsbehalf. Tay tT and you will bless the day. J. Czapkay, for the permanent reeovery of his health. Borne down by the distressing symptoms incident to the vicious habit of uncontrollable passions in youth, depressed in body and mind, unable to perform even the most triflingduty imposed upon the daily avocations of life, I sought the advice of many physicians, who at first regardec my disease as of trifling importance, but, alas! afteia few weeks, and ig sveral instances, months, of their treatment, I foundto my unutterable horror, that insted of relief the symptoms became more alarming in their torture, and being finally told by one that the diseue, being principally confined te the brain, medicines wuld be of little consequence I despaired of ever regainirg my health, strength and energy; and asa last resort.and with but a faint hope, I called upon Dr. Czapkay, who, after examining my case, prescribed some mediche, which almost instantly relicved me of the dull pain and dizziners in my head. Encouraged by the result, I resolved to place myself immediately underbis qre, and, bya strict obedience to all his directions amc advice, my head became clear, my ideas collected. the constant painin my back and groins, the weakness of my limbs, the nervous reaction of my whole body on he slightest alarm or excitement, the misanthropy anc evil forebodings, the self distrust and want of confideice in others, the incapability to study, and want ofreolution, the frightful, exciting, and at times, pleasumble dreams at night
fellowed by involuntary dishargeshave all disappeared, and, infact, intvomonths after .aving consulted the Doctor, I felt as if inspired by . new life—that lifa which a short time ago, I contemplted to end with my own hand. With a view toguardthe anfotunate from falling into the snares of incompetent quaks, I deem it my duty to offer thistestimony to the meits and skill of Dr. Czapkay. and recommend him toill who may stand in need of medical advice, being assred by his own experience that, once under his carea radical and permanent cure can be effected, 3 R. Carp.—Prompted by an hones desire of my heart, J wish to lay before the pubhe a cse which deserves a commendation, not only as an Act ¢scientfic skill but that of humanity also. About two yeas ago, I suddenly and from eauses unknown tome, was sized with a fit of epilepsy. which, owing to my inabilty to meet the expenses consequent upon a thorough redical treatment, an the discouragement which I met ‘ith on attempting it, soon became uch (as T was then 1d tofbelieve) as to defy the skillofany physician. I was frequently, while in pursuit ofmy calling, thrown dom to the ground without the least warning ; and although insensible to the agouies, I yet despised the miserts of my life, and soon learned to look upon those who wuld render assistance or shelter me from danger, as evimes who sought to proiong the existence of my misries. While in this state and having, previous to my affliction, tasted the sweets of life, I once more was inaced to attempt seek ing aid of 2 physicien. and by reommendation, called upon Dr. Czapkay, . told him ef m: circumstancesand of my inability to reward him for serrices--regardless of which, however, heat once undetuak my CaSe, aud with the bless ng of God, I was once more restored perfect health. Unable to reward him for the boonwhich I enjoy at present, and yet conscious of my indelttedness, I consider it due to myself and all afthheted, to nakethe case public,in order that those in need of medica advice may find a physician in whom every confidence can be placed. BARRETT & SHERWOOD, 135 Montgomery St. San Francisco. LONDOW CLUB HOUSE GIN, TO THE PUBLIC. I~ This celebrated Gin—pretending to nothing but what it is, viz: a pure and unaduiterated arti ticle, and assuming no artifteial merits of what iti not, as some of its rival imitators do—after five years of public approval and very extensive sales in California, has been pronounced by the public to be superior, not only as a beverage of general ase, to any other article competing against it, but is Unrivalled in its Medical Efficiency in most cases of complaints. To persons travelling in these days ofrapid transit from Kast to West, North to South, who are constantly changing their water as well their climate; whe are dsizking, indeed, a dozen kinds of water in every twenty-four hours, and each draught containing some property acting inchemical antagonism to the preceding one thereby causing an unnatural degree of excitement to the stomach—it is positively and absviutely necessary to use a counteracting agent. From the fact that the “London Club House Gin,” is prepared expressly to meet such exigencies, and to act as we know it will act, as an antidote we cofidently prescribe it as the very best article in the country. The name of “Aromatic Schcidwm Schnapps” has never been attached in any way to this article. In first presenting the & “London Club House Gin,” to the public, my aim was to give them a pure end unadulterated article of Gin, and te eal) it by its right name. The success attending its introduct i: n and extensivefsale in California is a sufficient gusrantee of the high appreciation of the article by ew»sumere. Various parties have from time to time put ns and shipped to California an artiele which they ca! “Crus Hovse Gin.” My Gin, which bas gained such a reputation in California, is branded on ih: cases, «Old London Club House Gin, W. H{b” The bottles also have a white labe! witi a fae aim:!ie ofimy signature. I caution all partiesto beware Jf d24-3m imitations. WM. H.
