taken yesterday for and against Terry. His
friends are making a desperate effort to create
pablic opinion in his tavor. His official posi:
tionghis education, his former character, his
off.cial relations and family ties, are all paraded
before the community, as reasons that should
exempt him from the doom of one of less pre:
tensions to these qualifications. They generally fall still born, however, upon the ears of
our citizens, as in this reformation they are
no respecters of persons or positions. ‘Terry,
in the first place, had little respect for his own
position or family, else he would have remaincd at Sacramento, where both demanded his
attention; and since he has voluntarily chosen
‘o come down from the proud position of the
Supreme Bench, to mingle with and protect a
set of rowdies from merited chastisement, in
which he has unfortunately thrust himself into
» dungeon, let him take the consequences. It
1s too late to talk ofsympathy. It is too
late to oS merits of his position. He
abandon jose very fuolishly, and disgraced
both his official and private position, avd comes

Committee, and unfortunate as it would be to
visit severe punishment upon aman like Terry,
