Sickness and Disease in this California
Climate.
Sold by all Druggists in the State.
IGHLY IMPORTANT to the SICK !—Is it not
Awful to Note the Haggard, Sallow, Cadaverous
Faces and Wasted Skeletor Forms we meet—Thisis
not confined totheold, but we see the young, ablebodied
and thore in the prime of life, complain after being
here sometime of illness ; some grow unnaturally fat
suddenly ; others waste and grow thin; they cannot
localize or describe their disease, yet they feel universally unwell, mentally and physically ; some have pains
and weakness inthe breas:, limbs or body; they feel
a wantof muscular and mental energy, 4 want of animation, and have fearful foreb:dings for the future,
poor appetite, Nervous irritability and sleeplessness ;
theirskin is dry, and occasionally flushed and heated,
thin, pallid and yellow.
Now Sudden Deaths, Lunacy and Universal Debility
is too. too prevalent here ; and who wonders when
combined with the climate like this, a dry air impregnated with elictricity and galvani-m? We have many
who have passed through sickness, whose life is IN
TEMPERATE and DEBAUCHED, or hare seenothers
who have been nearly Doctored to Death by quack medicines, or by the advice of “The Faculty,’’? who have
impregnated them with mereury, calomel, &e,
For all such cases is Dr. Jacob Webber’s Invigoratingcordial Sanguifier most especially adapted, inas
much as the above cases and symptoms did Dr. Webber minutely »stuuy in adapting his Cordial totheircure.
It enlivens the Torpid Liver, ejects all Bilious matter
from the System, causes “udation. or Free Perspiration
(so necessary to health), it purifies and Enriches the
Blood, gives Strength to the limbs and Body. and is
positively infallible ingll Nervous Diseases, Trembling
or Wak efulness,
What Constitutes Health ?
Rich Pure Blood, Natural Perspiration, Good Appe
tite for food, Sleep, Exerciseand the Enjoyments of Naty of the Liver, and all other natnral Functions ; sucha
stateis felt by all, after using this—Sea sickness and
Delirium Tremens. It is a preventative and absolute
remedy for these. It removes all longing or taste for
liquor. Many imebriates have found that after ithas
renewed and strenghtened them, quieted their nerves,
it has caused aversion to spirits I have seen it cure
some of the most frightful cases where delirium tremens
have actually occurred.
. :
How One Feels After taking it.
FTER taking ita genera glow of warmthis felt
through the chest and body, a strength inthe limbs
amental clearness cf ideas, memory, and exhilaration
of spirits; in afew days the patient finds that a univearl
strength, mentally and bodily,-has gra¢ ally assumed a
part of him; that disease of every kind has left him ;
that his blond courses throrgh his veins thin, rich, and
pure ; his liver, before torpid. is now active ; his ideas
clear andIncid ; his hand and nerves firm, he feels capable ofany exerciseThus haveIseen many very low

both in Europe and America than any other diuratic
beverage.
Analyzed, itis a perfectly pure Liquor, inits effects a
mild and whoisometonic. It is extensively used and
approved by the medical faculty, the temperance people,
heads of families, &c.
In Gravel, Gout, and Rheumatism, in obstructions of
the Bladder and Kidneys, and in General Debilty, its
effects are prompt, decided, andinvariably reliable ; and
it is not only aremedy for these maladies, but in all eases
which they are produced by drinking bad water, which
is almost universally the cause of them, it acts asa sure
preventive.
For Fever and Ague it is one ofthe most efficacious
preventives thatcan be resorted to
The Aromatic Scheidam Schnapps,
consequently in great demand by persons traveling,
orabout to settle in new parts of fhe country especially,
as wellas by many in every community, where it has
become known, on account of its various other remedial properties.
In ali cases of a Dropsical tendency, it is generally
the only remedy required when adopted in the early
stage of the disease
In dyspepsia maladies, when taken in proper quantities, as a diet drink, and especially at dinnef, it is found
by uniform experience, to be eminently efficacious in the
most cbstinate cases, when even the best of the usual
remedies have faiied to afford more than temporary relief. In cases of Flatulency, itis an immediate and invariable specific, and it may be administered in diluted
and proportlonate quantities, even to Young Infants, in
all those piroxyisms of griping painin the stomach and
bowels to which they are especially subject, as well as
the cholie of grown persons. 11 ee
Its judicious adoption in connection with the principal
meals,or when a sense of exhaustion dictates its use,
never fails to relieve the debility attendant upon protracted chronic maladies.low temperament and exhansted vital energy, by whatever cause induced. These are
facts to which many of the most eminent medical men,
beth in England and tho United States, have borne testimony, and which are corroborated by the highest written authorities.

DR. C. H. TOZER,
The Great Eradicator 0 of
SECRET DISEASES!
And Founder of the z
HUNTERIAN MEDICAL INSTITUTE
Sixth Street, between J and K, Sacramento.
\ 7 OULD most respectfully inform those afflicted with
Private Complaints, such as Syphil-s, Genorrhoea, Nocturnai Emisslous, and all the consepuences of
Self Abuse, that he was formerly Practical Physician of
Loeke Hospital.in the City of London, where there are
at all times under medical treatment. from fifteen hundred te two thousand, and for the last four years of the
city of -acramento Thousands can testify tothe many
radical and pertect cures effected; and it is well known
that he is the only onein the State who has mace a
thorough and Perfect Cure after all the advertising
quacks have failed.
A Practical Treatise on VeNEREAL.
By Dr. C. H. TOZER, Sacramento.
There are no maladies towhich the human family is
liable of Deeper Impoggance either in a medical o~
moral point of view, than those arising from impure
sexual intercourse.
As medical men, itis our business to look at diseases
merely asit affects Life and Health; and our efforts are
directed, notto the reformation of man’s vici: us propensities, but tothe mitigation of his BoDILY SUFFERING,
It is in this abstract sensethat we write of Venereal Affections. Anditis inthis sense that the Doctor should
address himself to their study. If his feelings are allowed
toinfluence his professional pursuits, h s qualifications
willnecessamly be limited to those subjects that are
most agreeable to his tastes. To become an enlightened
Practitioner, itis essential that he should be a liberal
and ardent one; and affections, in their nature repulsive
to delicate sentibilities, n.ustbe regarded in ro other
light than as morbid phenomenaof the Living Body.
The whole business of the Medical art. when we takea
low view of it and regard it only as labor, is a disagreeableone. In any form, disease is unpleasant to look
upon. The sick chamber affords no pleasant sights.—
The physician is made the witness both *f physical pain
and moral infirmity, Struck by disease, the attrac
tive part of man’s nature are clouded over ; his pride
is humbled: his intellect is disturbed ; his wheln
characcer, ina word, istransformed. Too often, alas,
is sickness the consequence of his own folly. self-in
dulgence, the gratification ofappetites, the exhansting toil ofavarice, the feveris’ Jabors for human applause, all produce their baneful effects upon the Con
stitution. Brttothe medica] attendant, the moral aspect of these facts are not to have any influence upon
his -kill or his oares.
At the best, human nature is but weak. This is the
first truth for a medical man to learn: and in whatever way this weak oess is exhibited, the philanthrophic beart willteel that it isa pleasure, as wellasa
duty, to relieve bodily infirmities, whenever and
however they appear. This isthe higher and nobler
view of medical science. It devotes itself to the mitigation of pain, the abatement of « *, the restoration tohealth. In doing this, its ministe. must be the
spectator of much that is disagreeable. But he is rewarded by the lofty satisfaction of feeling that although
personal comfort is sacrificed and sympathy is often
painfully excited, yet itis through sucha road that
Benevolence has the widest scope, and meets with
the richest return for its labors.
In this view, a1] diseases are alike to the faithful
physician. He makes no distinction between the causes
that have developed them. He sees man suffering,
and all his facilities are employed to give him health.
Disease he regards asa misfortune, and not as a punishment.
Of all the affections that affict man, there is no one
more terrible in its consequences than SYPHILIS,
Dreadful as it is tothe person who first contracts it,
frightful astrequently areits ravaes in his constitu
tion, énding occasionally, in destruction ; yet is a disease of deeper interest, and more te be lamented when
it is trensmitted tooffspring Childrenoften come into
he world with the disease hideously to the eye ; covered with blotohes and sores ; with wrinkled faces,
having the appearance of old age: and itis )robable
that every particle ofthe living organism is equally
tainted with the poison: When such a condition exists, it cannot be doubted that life will too frequently
be short and full of pain.
SCORFULA. CONSUMPTION, and other diseases
that are sometimes hereditary, ave in many cases, its
fruit; and one way to devastating march of
those fearfully fatal affe . is, as far as practicnble
to ERADICATE SYPHILIS FROM THE WORLD,
Would it not seem that a disease so prevalent and so
direful, ought to excite the deepest interest among
the medieal men, both as respects its truce pathology
and its treatment -—What excnse can he offer for his
deficiency, whoecalls himself a surgeon, and yet does
not even recognize the disease when he sees it, and is
ignorant ofthe best means of checking it and preventing any future evil consequences? Is it enough for
him te say thatte the imagination the disease is a loath
some one? thatisa disreputable one to have, and a
disgusting one to treat? Such an excuse may, proLably, satisfy him who has nobetter, but will not satisfy science nor philanthropy.
Whoever undertakes the medical profession with a
true spirit, will never rest contented with knowing
only alimited partof it, There is no object: that he
thinks unworthy of investigation and study. He cannot be satisfied witha smattering knowledge of what
he is bound to understand well. He feels resting
upon hima double obligation—one, the duty he owes
to the public. to whom he announces that he iaquali
fied membor of a noble prefession ; the other, the
duty he owes to himacif. t. make and maintaina reputation for attainments and skill, There are some
prac itioners, indeed there are many, who are ignorant
of several dicases. because they fancy itis not respectable to treatthem. Of allsuch persons it may be asserted as beyond dispute, that their ignorance is not
confined to these diseases alone ; they will be found deficientin allother points. and are not properly qualified for the responsibilities they have assumed WhLoever nasa just appreciatthmee Ofto m dieal art, will
not know any diiferance in the respectability of diseases. All maladies are alike st subjects for his care
flection; and the only «istinction Which he acknowledges, is that w cyyhacises fromtheir greater or jess
gravity. Cirenumstance may, indeed, dircet his )ractice ina particular channe. se that his business will
be inclined toone class of «ti ctions, rather than another ; but thisis not because he regards some as beneath or unworthy of his notice
ackery has profited by the neglect that venereal
s have experienced ; and it is notorious that
pretenders havesecnred a large share oi such practice. Itis time for the profession to free itself from
thisreproach. The welfare of societyis as deepiy concerned inthis as it can possibly be with any other disease that affiictsthe human family
