A PROBLEM.
A gentleman just arrived at Nevada,
marked that he he was Fresh from Salt
Lake, wo merely wish a solution for our
numerous readers so that we ean give
the answer in next weeks publication.
t= Answer to our Riddle of last week ;
AN EGG.
A» EnGuisumMan's Dienrry OvurracED.—The Boston Ledger tells the following good story of an English merchant. He had come out to this country to wind up the affairs of a concern
which owed him considerable money,
and having never been in this country
before, acted precisely as if he had been
at home. He got along pretty well until he had occasion to take a journey into Maine. There he managed during a
stage ride to get on the box alongside
the driver. He states that he was greatly surprised, after the coach had proceeded a mile or so, to hear the driver
familiarly address him thus: “Captain,
I guess we'll have rain fore long.”) Our
English friend pulled up his shirt collar
and looking away without deigning any
reply. Shortly after, the driver made
another observation on the state of the
roads, whereupon the gentleman said,
“My man, I'll thank you not to address
yourself to me,” and unconsciously pulled at his dickey again; but the good natured loquacity of the driver was not to
be €asily repressed, for when again it
had been rebuked with another pull at
the dickey, it broke out in this overwhelming manner: “Look here, Captain, if you pull your collar much more,
you'll jirk up your shirt tail.” The
Englist man confesses that it was impossible for him to maintain his habitual
reserve from the instant; so passing
from one extreme to the other,he indulged in frequent outbursts of merriment, in
which the driver heartily joined, and
they parted at the journey’s end upon
the best of terms.
Anabartists.—This sect rose about
A. D. 1525, and was known in England
before 1549. John of Leyden, Muncer,
Storeck, and other German enthusiasts,
about the time of the Reformation,
‘ ; phe a
spread its doctrines. The Anabaptists
of Munster (who are of course properly
distinguished from the existing mild sect
of this name in England) taught that
infant Baptism was a contrivance of the
devil, that there is no original sin, that
men have a free will in spiritual things,
and other doetrines still more wild and
absurd. Munster they called Mount
Zion, and one Mathias, a baker, was declared to be the king of Zion. Their
enthusiasm led them to the maddest
practices, and they at length rose in
arms under the pretence of gospel liberty. Munster was taken about fifteen
months afterwards, and they were all
put to death. cx
The Anabaptists of England differ
from other Protestants in little more
than their not baptising children, as appears by a confession of faith, published
by the representatives of above one
hundred of their congregations, in 1689.
ReacTioNaRy SpeecHes.—The edi
tor of the Cooperstown (N. Y.) Journal
is a wild democrat, a good writer and a
good orator. During the late Presidential canvas he took the ‘stump,’ and the
folly of doing so he shows up as follows:
“Two or three weeks before election,
we declined making any more political
speeches. We are now convinced that
we should have ‘held up’ before we did,
We made two speeches in this town, and
here the democrats ‘got licked !’ awfully! We spoke from one of the pulpits
‘a: Burlington, and ‘thunder’ was the
result. We attended one meeting at
Milford, and there the democrats got
‘particular jessie!’ Went over to Richfield and talked an hour and a half toa
fall meeting—look at the figures! Spent
a day and a half in making a pilgrimage
to Morris, and there the ‘unterrified’
are thrashed out of their boots! Spoke
one night at Westford, and were assured
that our speech had a ‘decided effect.’
So we think! large increase of opposition majority!’

AS LARGE AS EVER!
Paris, a witty speech about 4 man often
makes him better remembered than an
epitaph. Ihe learned Mons. Thibaudeau is just dead, and was on the point
of being then and there forgotten. But
some friend, who was with him at the
last moment, was recounting pathetically the manner of his death:
“He Seated himself,” said this friend,
“he turned his head—he took off his

“Ah!” said the young Dumas, who
was present, “he took off his spectacles
first? At least, then, he was spared
the pain of seeing himself die!”
Ree, how long would ‘Thibaudeau
have been remembered, but for the mention of him which there will be in the
telling of that witticism ?
Artists—As for artists, they are
among the most delightful of mankind.
What do they care for conventional riches, whose life is one long dream of beauty, and on whose world every sunbeam
pours a shower of living gold? When
the monarch stooped to pick up the
brush of Titian, he meant to say by the
act that he acknowledged his kingly
brotherhood; and Ludwig of Bavaria
never did himself greater honor than
when he was walking arm-in-arm with
Thorwaldsen. The empire of the artist
is only second to that of woman. He
reigns by producing that which she possesses—beauty.
E> Who is there that somebody does
not contrive to like?
-A’Harp Hir.—“I have always preserved my reputation,” said Mrs. ——,
one evening, addressing herself rather
pointedly to Mrs. “You always
set a ridiculous value on trifles !”” rejoined the insulted fair one.

to a superior imitation of Imported Brandies, viz :—
Otard, Sazerac, Marett Cognac, Poultney, Seignette,
United Vineyard Propricters, Castillion and London
Dock Brandies. These Liquors will have a full fruity
flavor, and a beautiful, sparkling color. Common Rectified Whiskey will be changed by the use of the oil of
Cognac to New York Brandy, Pine Apple Brandy, Common Cognac Brandy, &e.

LACOUR’S CONCENTRATED ACID will, in five

Vinegar and twenty-five gallons of water to thirty gallons of the most acid Vinegar that can be found in the

vinegar can be made for one dollar and sixty cents per
barrel,
FOR MAKING LIQUORS, Lacour’s Oils require no
preparation—only pour the oil into the Whiskey and
shake well. The Liquors thus made will h a fine natural aroma, a full, rich, oily taste ; a beay ul transparent color anda fine bead, Lacour’s oils exert three distinct properties in converting common whisky to brandy
gin, &e, The first property combines with and subsides
in the form of floculent particles the whole of the grain
oil, (Amylie Aleohol.) The Whiskey is thus deprived of
that peculiar irritating and burning taste, and becomes
a neutral spirit ; the second property consists in an oily
mucillaginous taste imparted to the liquor, which renders it mellow, and imparts an appearance of great age ;
the third property is exhibited in the rich vinous nutty
odor that is imparted to the liquor, which reuders distinction from the genuine brands impossible,
These oils are put upin quart flasks ; each flask contains sufficient oil for making three hundred gallons of
liquor, Fulland comprehensive directions accompany

Turner’s Ginger Wine.
HE MEDICAL FACULTY throughout the Union
have acknowledged this to be one of the best family
medicines now in use. By chemleal process it has been
proved to possess ALTERATIVE, TONIC AND ANTI
DYSPEPTIC properties, superior far to those found in
any other medicinal beverage yet discovered,
THE MEDICAL FACULTY ofthe State of New York
prescribe it in almost every ease for debility and lassitude,
owing to its soothing effects on the system, and the absence of all injurious incrals, chemicals or acids.
THE TURNER BROTHERS have in their possession
numerous certificates of its sanitive properties, from the
most eminent medical men in the United States, who have
witnessed its effeets on their patients, where it has becn
adininistered in their extensive practice.
If HAS BEEN ANALYZED by the most eminent
chemists of New York city and Buffalo, where the Turner
3rothers manufacture daily thousands of gallons, and so
popular has it. become, that they can hardly supply the
demand, even when their stills are kept in operation day
and night. 4
This Wine is acknowledged at the East to be the BEST
RESTORATIVE NOW IN USE where general p:
tration of the system exists, or derangement of the funetions of the digestive organs, as it braces the nerves anew,
reeoats the stomach, aml creates an appetite when other
tonics have failed.
This ELLENT WINE is pleasant to the taste, and
the strictest advocate of temperance cannot discover any
intoxicating quality in it. Tt is wholly free from all substances that are injurious to health, but on the contrary
its effeets on the tem of either invalids or persons in
robust health, are ef the most beneficial description.
Caution to the Public.
The reputation awarded to TURNERS’

aswell as inthis State, has been the means of putting in
the market many spurious articles—to guard against

has not this label will contain the genuine Ginger Wine.
Unprincipled men in this city have partially counterfeited the label lately used by the Turner Brothers, and

PROMPTED by an honest desire of my heart, I wish to
lay before the publica case which deserves a light commendation, not only as an act of scientifie skill, but that
of humanity, also. About two years ago, I suddenly and
from eauses unknown to me, was seized with a fit of Epilepsy, which owing to my inabilit to meet the expenses
consequent upon a thorough medical treatment, andthe
discouragement which I met with on attempting it, soon
bebome such (as I was then led to believe,) as to defy the
skill of a physician. Iwas frequently, while in pursnit ony calling, thrown down to the ground without the slightest warning, and although insensible to the agonies, I yet
despised the miseries of my Hfe, and soon learned to look
npon those who would render me assistance or shelter me
from dauger as enemies who sought to prolong the
ofmy existence. While in this State, and having previous to my afflictions tasted the sweets of life, I once
more was induced to attemptseeking aid of a phy:
