New Ap’s.— The ladies in Nevada are particularly interested in knowing that Mrs. Taft
has established a millinery shop next door below W. H. Crawford & Co., and the Journat office. Sco her advertisement.
Frank Carter offers the well known Virginia
House for sale. It is céunted good property.
Nevadans going to San Francisco will find no
more elegant accommodations than at the International Hotel. Haley keeps a hotel as isa
hotel.
No more popular Hotel is found in the State
than the “ What Cheer ” in San Francisco. The
business done by the house is immense. Customers must be well treated to insure such patronage.
Covrr or Sessioxs.—Three more persons
Were consigned to the tender mercies of MeCauley, on Tuesday, viz: Vorath, alias Dutch
Bill, David Jacobs and Sandy Allettod. Each
were sentenced to four years in the State Pritén
for robbing the sluice of Crossman & Co.
The case of Chas. Sanford was tried on Mén
day and submitted to the jury. After being owt
all night the jury was brought into court and
discharged being unable to agree. A nolle prosequi was entered, on the understanding that
the defendant would leave the State never t6
return.

members of Union Lodge No., 4, of the I. 0. of
G. T. passed the following resolutions on Friday
. evening, the 23d inst?
Your Committe to whom was referred the duty
of preparing suitable resolutions expressive of
the esteem and respect in which our late W. V.
T., Bro. John V. Watson wag held by tne members of Union Lodge No. 4, [. 0. of G. T., would
respectfully report :
Whereas, It has pleaged an over-ruling Providence to remove from our midst our well beloved brother, J. V. Watson, we deem it due to his
memory togive suitable expression to the feelings of sorrow which pervade our hearts :
Resolved, That whilst recognizing in the
death of our Brother, the hand of God and humbly bow to his will, yet we sincerely deplore his
loss a8 that of one of our most worthy members,
one Who was always ready to perform his duty,
and who continually set an example in his daily
life well worthy our imitation, one who was a
true friend, faithful Brother and ever ready to
aid in the catise of humauity and in the dissemination of the principles of Temperance, Virtue
and Morality.
Résofved; That we deeply sympathize with
the relatives in their bereavement and that a
cep of these resolutions be sent them, and that

the Territorial Legislature has no such
power, and that it is only when a State Constitution is formed and the State is admited
to the Union, that popular sovereignty becomes inherent. While the Territory re.
mains the common property of all the States,
the citizens of eath have rights which cannot be abridged %y the local Legislature.
He admits that the organic act pérmits the
people to menage their own affairs in their
own way; but then comets tht question, he
. Says—who aré the people? He denies that
the.representatives are the people, or have
any right to act in the matter. In other
words, the people may be unanimous in
their opinion, and send their representatives
to embody that opinion in legislation, but
since the répréséntatives are not in fact the
people, they have no power for such action.

he rises above Moses as a lat giver and is
indeed a Daniel come to judgment.
Srrance Custom:—A most extraordinary
custom prevails among the Vizrees, a powerful tribe occupying an extensive district in
Cuba, among the mountains between Persia
ad India. It is, im faet, a female prerogative that has no patallél among any other
people upon the earth, and just reverses—
what we arein the habit of considering the
natural order ef things—the women choose
their husbands and not the husbands their
wives. Ifa wonvan be pleased with a man,
shesendsthe drumiméf of the camp to pin a
handkerceief to his cap, with the pin she has
used to fasten her hair. The drummer watch=
es his opportunity, and does this in public,
naming the woman, and the man is obliged
to marry her, if he can pay her pri#s to her
father.
Prrex Harvey, of Boston, will pubfis? next
summer his personal recollections of Daniel Webster, with whom, for many years. he had the most
intimate relations. Perhaps no onehas a richer
fund of memorabilia, now that Choate is dead,
than Mr. Harvey. His right to publish them
will not be dowbted by those who remember Mr.
Webster's affectionate recognition, on his death
bed, of the value and unselfishness of the attachment of his friend.
