TO AN ABSENT WIFE.
Written from Biloxi, on the Gulf af Mexico.
BY GEORGE D. PRENTICE.
’Tis morn— the sea breeze seems to bring
Joy, heaith and fieshness on its wing—
Bright flowers, to me all strange and new,
Are glittering in the early dew —
And perfumes rise from many a grove
As incense to the clouds that move
Like spirits o’er yon welkin clear—
But Iam sad—thou art not here.
’Tis morn —a calm unbroken sleep
Is on the blue waves of the deep —
A soft haze, like a fairy dream,
Is floating over hill and stream—
And many a broad magnolia flower
Within its shadowy woodlgnd bower
Is gleaming like a lovely star —
But I am sad—thou art afar.
"Tis eve —on egrth the sunset skies
Are painting their own Eden dyes ;
The stars come down, and trembling glow .
Like blossoms in the waves below : é
And like some ynseen sprite, the breeze,
Seems, lingeriag ‘mid the orange trees,
Breathing in music round the spot —
Hut lam sad—I see thee not. ‘
'Tis midnight — with a soothing spell
The far tones of the ocean swell
Soft as a mother’s cadence mild,
Low bending o'er her sleeping chiid —
And oh each wandering breeze are heard
The rich notes of the mocking bird
In many a wild and wondrous lay —
But Iam sad—thou art away.
Isiuk in dreams —low, sweet and clear,
Thy own dear voice is in my ear;
Around my cheek thy tresses twine ;
Thy own love hand is clasped in mine;
Thy own soft lip to mine is pressed ;
Thy head is pillowed on my breast;
O! Ihave all my heart holds dear;
And I am happy — thou art here.

it consists in standing by coolly, arranging the ceremonies of the murder, and

The theatre in Paris was crowded with a brilliant assemblage to witness

The critics of that famed metropolis had

The highest ranks vied with each other
in praising her charms, her wonderful
skill in music—the voice which nature
had bestowed upon her asa precious
gift corresponding with the rare grace
of her person and the brilliancy of hes

had received offers of marriage from the
loftiest in wealth and’ rank—that the
choicest spirits of the age courted her
society, and were spell-bound by her
fascinations. Royalty itself had sanetioned the general opinion. Never had
Paris seen an indiyidual whose appearance was greeted with more rapturous
acclamations.
The opera proceeded, until the scene
appeared which was to introduce the
heroine. Long before she entered,
bursts of applause broke forth in various
parts of the eager and dense throng—«
there was @ moment’s silence; and a
creature, perfectly and exquisitively
lovely, suddenly “shone before them,
bending with the grace of a summer bud
amidst the tremendous peal of the gathered thousands which’ burst forth and
died away, and burst forth again and again till the dome trembled and ‘the
foundation seemed rent asunder. Amid
this tumult of enthusiasm, I stood with
folded arms gazing at the yision, which
tome seemed to haye floated to the
skies. A break of music from the orchestra announced a favorite air, an
she came forward to the stage lights to
sing. Notin the depths of the green
forest in the hush of noon—not in the
desert in its wild desolation—not in the
dark tomb itself, could reign a silence
more perfect than hung over the vast
multitude. It seemed as if the light and
beautiful being, whose lofty plumes of
snow bent down above a radient face,
was an enchantress, and by some potent spell had struck each one into a
statue, with the coloring and attitude
and expression of life.
And then when the last notes, which
seemed warbled from the throat of 2
nightingale, had passed away, the silence for a moment continued, as if no
one dared disturb the air on which yet
jrung the most delicious notes ever heard
\by mortals. I thought to myself, if fate
jwould give such a creature to me!-——
The idea haunted me—I loved her—t
was wretched.
don. Dismal! I could not believe my
own eyes. There was the same face—
but all the glory was gone. It was dimmed and obscured. The seraph had
sunk into the mortal. It was the sua
shorn of his beams. It was the angel
fallen, whose brightness was not the
same. I had just married an artless
girl, whose modesty shrank from every
eye but mine,.who could neither dance,
a sing, nor, iay on any instrument.—
t happened that we embarked together
on a voyage of some length. I had
every opportunity of judging of the
character of my fair enchantress. It
was dreadful. I shuddered at the eseape Thad made. How many a man
is rendered miserable by falling in love
with beauty and accomplishments, intakes the act—when the future looks ~
dark, and the present dreary, by the
fragrance of this little instrument, extricated by means of fire, you are fora
brief period rendered insensible to every
sorrow and lulled into dreams mere entertaining than those of sleep.

An Exce.Luent SpeecH.-When Louis the fourteenth visited Rheims, the
Mayor of the city brought him several
bottles of wine and some fine preserved
pears, and addressed him as foliows:
“Sire, we offer you our wine, our pears
and our hearts, which are the best things
our city can boast of.” Louis tapped
the Mayor on the shoulder familiarly,
and replied, “Mr. Mayor, I thank you
heartily for your harangue.”’
A Goop GuNn.—A couniry farmer told
a friend of his, who had come from town
for a few days’ shooting, that he once
had so excellent a gun that it went off
immediately upon a thief coming into
the house, although not charged. “How
the deuce is that?’ said his friend.—
» Why,” replied the farmer, “because
the thief carried it off; and what was
worse, before I had time time to charge
him with it.” ©

Tin.—The Pheenicians traded with
England for this article for more than
eleven hundred years before the Christian era. It is said that this trade first
gave them commercial importance in
the ancient world.’ Under the Saxons,
dur tin mines appear to have been ‘neglected; but after the coming in of the
Normans, they produced considerable
revenues to the Earls of Gornwall, particularly to Richard, brother of Hénry
ILI; a charter and various immunities
were granted by Edmund, Earl Richard’s brother, whe also framed the stannary laws, laying a duty on the tin, payable to the Earls of Cornwall. Edward
III confirmed the tinners in their privileges, and erected Cornwall into a dukedom, with which he invested his son,
Edward the Black Prince, 1535.’ Sine
that time the heirs apparent to the
crown of England, if eldest sons, have
enjoyed it successively. Tin mines
were discovered in Germany, which lessened the value of those in England, till
then the only tin mines in Europe, A.
D. 1240.—Anderson. Discovered in Bar

Spain, 1782. England exports at present, on an average, fifteen hundred tons

Love Letrter.—A Volume of love
letters would make an amusing book,
although there are many chances in favor of its being ridiculous. I saw these
tw affecting lines the other day in an
old newspaper. Like nearly all poets,
the author has liberally availed himself,
in his climax, of the license extended to
that class of writers. :
Whene’er I see those lovely eyes,
Irave—I burn—I dote—I dies.
.
LeicH Hunt.—The occasion whicl
called forth the following lines was this:
Leigh Hunt had brought some good tidings to Carlyle, which so delighted Mrs,
Carlyle, who was in the roem, that she
spiang up from the chair and kissed the
“newsman.” Leigh, who is as courtly
a gdllant as John Hoope himself, sent
her two bettles of apple-jack next morning, with these verses:
\Jenny kissed me when we met,
Springing from the chair she sat in;
Time, you thief who live to get
Sweets into your book, put that in!
Say I'm ugly —say I'm sad —
. Say that health and wealth have missed me-,
Say I'm growing old—but add, 2)
Three years after I met her in Lone.
