i, cere ame ey’ THE NEVADA JOURNAL. FRIDAY MORNING, MAY 24, is61. AGENCY NOTICES, Mr. L. P. FISHER is our only authorized Agent in Ban Francisco to receive Advertisements, reecipt fer the samc, and te transact business generally for the NEVADA JOURNAL. Office—No. 17134 Washimgton Street, nearly opposite Maguire’s Opera . House—up-stairs. MR. A. BADLAM, is our only authorized Agent in Sacramento, to receive Advertisements, te receipt for the same, and to fransact business enerally fer the NEVADA JOURNAL. Office at e St. tge Hotel, sacramento. Jour Deax Harse’s Bexerit.—It was an unpropiticus occasion for the Complimentary Benefit to Julia Dean Hayne on Monday night. We were sorry that the rain poured down to dieappoint many ladies who designed being present. A great many, however, of the fair sex were not to be turned aside by the storm from paying their respects to the accomplished lady and artiste whom all delight to honor.— The house was fairly filled, and it is but small praise to say that Mrs, Hayne as Evadne in the play of that name was all and more than the best anticipated. A part of the programme of the cvening was the repeating of Rodman Drake's address to the American Flag. Mrs. Hayne favored in this affair the citizens of Nevada with a treat which stirred their patriotism to its depths. The recitation was beautiful and sublime. Standing with the flag of our country above her, atthe conclusion of the recitation the audience rose and responded with three enthusiastic cheers, which told their hearts were with the flag and beat responsive to the sentiments she expressed. Mrs. Hayne left on the following morning for Marysville with the kindest wishes on the part of her many friends in this vicinity. SRR RWS Tus Maartivetti’s.—-This troupe of muscular performers, held their first Jevee here in their big canvas on Saturday night last to a monster crowd. The immense pavilion was crowded to its utmost capacity.— The Martinetti’s are without doubt popular wherever they go. C. V. Hand, the Proprietor, seems to have a happy knack of getting along smoothly and commanding the respect of the extraordinary public. George S. Pierce, our old friend, and . fellow “pard,” is a capital hand as advance } agent to create a furor fur any company he travels for. In’ this county thus far the troupe bas met with unbounded success. Accompanying the immense caravan which the troupe forms, is a human being, deformed . te such anextent as to be actually hidcous.— The Albino Children passed through the city op Monday to join thé Martinetti’s. They will hereafter be exhibited’ in connection with ‘he troupe. Tux Ausixo Caiprex.—Two children, a Loy whe says he is sixteen years of ages and a git] of eleven years, both the children of very dark parents, were exhibited here on Monday evening. The children have long and very white bair, their skin is remarkably fair and clear, and their eyes haye the singular merit of eceing better in the dark than in the light— the parents come from a small island to the aouth of Cuba’and are apparently of mixed Spanish and Indian blood. They report having had six children, three of dark complexion and black hair, and three albinos. For those who have not seen this strange freak of nature, the albino children are a great eurivsity. Hox. E. F. Seence, our Assemblyman, retarned home on Tuesday fully content for the Mr. Spence has done present with legislation. nothing as a Legislator to which serious objection can be made. He has been discriminating, honest and conscientious in the discharge of bis duties, and that is more than a dozen or two of his assocjates during the winter can slain. He is welcomed back to bis constituents with no stain upon his character as a man or law maker. WNevapa Linrarnr—New Booxs.—The Neyada TAbrary Association have just received the following works, which distribution: Lucy Crofton; A Wife's Trials ; ®'Brien’s and O’Flaherty’s, 2 yols.; The Linwouds; Prometheus; Maxims of Washington; Woving and Warring in the Wilderness; Matrimonial Brokerage; Yoakum’s History of Texas,2 yols.; Gerald Griffin’s Works, 10 vols.; Demosthenes, 2 vols.; Macauley’s are now ready for Cervantes; E-say’s; Cicero. Rozsery.—The candy shop of John Eton, next door to the Joursat office was entered in the day time on Wednesday and a small money box eoataining about forty five dollars and a silver watch carried off The thief wheever he is, succeeded in getting away without being detected. Mors Fracs.—The Uuion boys on Gold Flat are making arrangements to hoist an enormous American Flag on a pole two hundred feet high. A pine tree is to be left on its own root trimmed and ‘spliced to make the flag staff. Pixs Srnext Brivce.—The board of City Trustees are receiving proposals to build the Pine street Bridge. It is a good opening to a eempetent bridge builder. Our Acext.—Mr. A. H. McDonald, is our regularly authorized agent to selicit subseriptions, collect bills and receipt for the same. We trust our patrons and friends in the upper country will be*ready to receive him in a manacr that maketh a printers heart to rejoice. Axorazn Pour.—Pierce & Funston are raising a splendid pole 125 feet high in close proximity. to our office. The Stars and Stripesjwill float from the top of course. T. Proprietors of the Journal: —You are requested to publish the following preamble and resolutions by request of Sierra Nevada Division, No. 17, 8. of T. Wuernreas, It has pleased the Supreme disposer of events to remove from our midst our friend and efficient brother, Patrick Kexter, therefore Resolved, That while endeavoring to submit with Christian fort?tude to our bereavement, remeinbering that a zealous and efficient Son of Temperance, a faithful brother and a reliable friend has been strickev down, we cherish his memory with enduring love, and in the sad occurrence readily recognize the hand of him who, while he doeth all things well hath said: “be ye also ready.” Resolved, That the friends of deceased, both here and in the East, we tender our heartfelt sympathies, the more so as we are able to appreciate their loss, from our own observations of his many good qualities. Resolved, That this Division be clothed in mourning for the period of thirty days, in memory of our deceased brother. Resolved, That these resolutions be entered en the minutes of this Division, and published in the local papers. Resolved, That a copy, as published, be forwarded by the R. The Pony Express arrived at Fort Churchill this evening, at 5 o'clock, The foliowing is from the Sacramento Union Extra of the 2Ist. Sr. Louis Nay 13th. Events in the East are unimportant. Government is still determined on the policy of recapturing public property and putting down rebellion. All important points are being strengthened by U.S. troops. Battles are . constantly expected at Harper’s Ferry, Richmond, and several other places. The most important affair last week was the capture of Camp Jackeon. at St. Louis, by U. 8S. troops. There was a fight between the troops and the mob, resulting in the killing of several citizens and soldiers. There was a great excitement in consequence. Eighteen persons in all were killed at Camp Jackson, and twelve wounded. Saturday was a most fexciting day in the city of St. Louis, mobs paraded the streets every hour threatening death and destruction to Germans. At five o’clock on Saturday afternoon a corps of U. S. reserve guards marched up Walnut street, towards their armory, and were attackkilled. The soldiers whecled, returned the fire, and killed three of the mob and wounded several. After half an hour of severe fighting the mob was dispersed. Crowds paraded the streets on Saturday night, with the avowed determination of destreying the lives of German citizens. It is reported that six Germans were killed on Franklin Avenue at alate hour Satday night. Gen. Harney arrived in the city of St. Louis on Saturday and assumed command of the Military Department west. He immediately issued a proclamation calling on the citizens to preserve peace, and threatening to declare martial law if the municipal authorities are not sufficient. General Frost and command, who were taken prisoners, have been released on parole by taking an oath not to fight against the U.S. Government Tho Missouri Legislature passed several bills on Saturday, the nature of which is not known. It is thought a secession ordinance was passed. The Governor and Legislature of Missouri are greatly excited for fear that the United States troops would march to Jeffersen City. Bridges were burned on the Osage river to prevent the passage of troops. The city of St. Louis is comparatively quiet to-day. It is reported from Frederick, Maryland, that the South has asked for an armistice of sixty days. Rescrovs.—We learn tbat at the close of the services, last Sabbath morning, at the Baptist . Church, a unanimous expression was given by the congregation, which was large, in rising to resolution, previously adopted by the Church, requesting Rev. Mr. their fect, ratifying a . Brierly to continue his Pastoral relations. We . has consented to remain, How. E. W. Cousxcitman, called on us yesterday on his way home from his legislative . labors. Mr. Councilman, we are sorry to see, looks worn and in had health. He has made an honest and straight-forward representative of our county ‘the late Legislature. CZAPKAY, is already secured in a position which places it, as wellas its proprietor, far above the assaults of envy and professional malice. In the schools of France, the highest prizes are often awarded to practitioners in this department of Medical science, and they occupy with others an equally . lofty position in the profession. Ricord is an illustri ous example, a shining light among the philosophical stars ofhis age in Europe, and Dr. Czapkay has fully equalled him in this country, as a proof of which, the Philadelphia College of Medicine com plimented him with a Diploma, and the honorary AD EUNDEM degree. Selecting this as his field of opera tion, although qualitied asa graduate of the Uniniversity cf Pesth, and late Chief Surgeon of the Hungarian Revolutionary army, for more extended labors, Dr. L. J. Czapkay has bent his earnest attention to the cure of chronic and private diseases, in whichhe has become so greatan expert that he is now regarded as the LEADER in this branch of his profession throughout the United States, and his por trait and biography are published as 4 matter of interestin the most exclusive journals.
