ARRIVAL OF THE STEAMER GOLDEN GATE. “Per Gregory's Express. Fifteen Days Later from the Atlantic States, The steamship Golden Gate arrived; The deat at San Francisco on Saturday morning The youn sand passengers, among whom were 60 . firss trouble will be to par ladies and 30 children. Through Gregory's Express we have received New York papers to the 26th April. The intelligence by this arrival, although some fifteen days later than previous advices, is of but little general interest. : Kossuth was at Springfield, last accounts, reeciving considerable attention, but creating no excitement. Gon. Soloman Van Rensselaer died! events which may arise through the deat Albany, on the 23d ultimo, aged 78 year. Mr. Hulsemann, Austrian Charge at Washington, has obtained leave of absence from his government, and will shortly leave for Europe. The Japan expedition proposed by our government has met with much favor throughout Europe. The United States Senate on the 22d decided to make the whole number of of Congressional Representatives two hundred and thirty four—thereby allowing California to send two members, as at present, and giving South Carolina an extra member for her fraction. Hon. John Sargent of Philadelphia, died in that city on the 23d March. The new Captain General of Cuba, Don Valentin Canedo, arrived at Havana on the [5th April, and Gen. Concha teok his departure for Spain the next day. The National Theatre at Boston was destroyed by fire on the 22d ult. From all parts of the States we have dismal accounts of floods, tempests, &c. There has been a renewal of the Abolition excitement in Graydon county, Va., and the Vigilance Committee have offered a reward of one handred dollars each, for the apprehension of two abolition preachers. The overflow of rivers and creeks in Texas is said to be greater throughout the country than has been known hefore for many years. Many streams not exceeding thirty or forty yards from bank to bank, have now to be ferried over for a distance of several miles. The crops within the reach of the overflow have of course suffered, but to what extent is not yet known. The overflow of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, wae truly disastrous. In addition to the loss of man lives, it is estimated that $400,000 one of property was destroyed in the vicinity of Pittsburg. The watea was within three fee’ of the high water mark of 832. Upwards of five hundred families were driven from their homes in the little city of Allegheny. Many of the bridges on the Potomac have been nls away, anda large amount of valuable property along the river and canal, has been either carried off or wholly ruined. Several a were entirely destroyed in Virginia, In the New England States a great deal of damage has also been done. A dispatch from Boston furnishes melanoholy evidence of the disastrous effects of the storm. The British bri Joseph was wrecked on Traro beac and all but two of those on board were doubtless drowned. A large number of vessels aro ashore in the vicinity of Boston. It will ly be many days, perhaps weeks, ere we can begin to estimate the extent of damsge produced by this gale. Daxapro. Sarpwaecn.—Another terrible di ocourred atsea. At 2 o'clock on the morning of the [9th of February, Her Majesty's steamer Birkenhead was wrecked between two and three miles from the shore of Southern} of Africa. The exact spot at which the calamity happened was Point Danger. Off this point she struck upon a reef of sunken rocks. The ship was steaming eight and o half knots at the time; the water was smooth and the sky serene, but the speed at which the vessel was tanning proved her destruction. The rock penetrated throwgh her bottom just aft the foremast, and in twenty minutes time there was a few floating spars and afew miserable creatures clinging to them, and this was al! that remained of the Birkenhead.
