N Turner, Eaq., on Rock Creek, two miles from . town, caught fire at about eleven o’clock on . Bakery had its front s'ove in by the heels of . . cotton growers in India. The news of the surrender of Fort Sumter The people say they are ready for the war. TO THE LADIES I President Davis will take commaad at Pensacola, when the Montgomery Gcvernment declaros war, The steamship Baltic from Charleston bar arrived at New York on the 18th, The Harriet Lane, Pawnee, and Pocahontas with Anderson’s command have arrived. The Powbatten bad not boem at Charleston, The Pawnee did not arrive at Charleston uatil after the sunrender of Fort Suunter,. During the whole time of the bombardment of tho fort it was blowing a gale, Major Anderson landed at the Battery and was received by an immense crowd, Tho carriage was surrounded by people who — to his house where Anderson joined bie wife, Capt. Doubleday gives v statement after the} surrender of Fort Sumter and says the demand was made on the ['Tth and refused, not only by Major Anderson but by his eommand. On Friday morning, at 3 o'clock, the rebels sent word that tke fire would be opened in one hour. At 4 o'clock the firo opened in every direction including hidden batteries, Anderson’s men took breakfast on salt pork and biscuit. His command was divided into three watches and then went to work and opened fire on Moultrie, Cummings Point and Morris Island. Anderson refused to kt men work on the parapets on account of the tremendous fire. Anderson’s fire on Moultrie had terrible effect. Anderson’s berracks caught fire and were extinguished by the efforts of Hart, of New York, and Lyman of the Baltimore Volunteers. On Saturday the officers quarters caught fire from sheif at the main gate and were burned. The magazine was surrounded by fire.— Ninety barrels of powder were taken out and thrown into the sea. When the magazine was encirled by fire, all their materials were cut off, and they had eaten their last biscuit two days before. We had to lay on the ground with wet handkerchiefs on our faces to prevent smothering. A favorable steady wind was all that saved our lives. The cartridge boxes gave out and five men were engaged in the manufacture of them oat of shints, blankets and sheets. It will take half a million of dollars to re pair Fort Sumteyr’s interier. Most of the shots were aimed at the United States flag. Wigfalldemanded a surrender without authority. Anderson pulling down the flag, and afterwards finding he had been sold, raised the flag again. Hart, of N. Y., nailed the colors amid the deadly fire of the enemy and the cheers of the U. S. troops. Andarson’s men at New York indignantly re. pel the charge that he was unfaithful The reported seizure of Harper’s Ferry by the State troops of Virginia was afterwards contradicted. Further dispatches from Washeington leave no room to doubt that Virginia has seceded. The convention is etrl in secret session. Southern vessels have been seized in northern ports. Troops are still pouring into Washington and an attack is apprehended every hour. Accounts from New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Maine say regiments are already on the way to Washington. Southern feelings greatly strengthened by the news from Virginia. Evropean News.—The steamer Liverpool with dates to April Sth, arsixved at Halifax April 18th. The London Times says the proposition of the prohibition of the slave trade by the Southezp Confederacy was merely put forward to conciliate English prejudice. Such superfeus denial will not long be adhered io. = It also points to Englis& resistance in the first revolution as a warning against interference in: the present disruption and says both tariffs are hostile to British interests. Sacramento, April 28-—2 p.m, The pony arrived this morning, and the news delow we clip from the Union extra, St. Lovis, Apri? 88th. The war department, Apail . 5th, issued a call on State Governments for troops, Seventy-five thousand men required. The northern states responded but the border states refused. There is great excitement. In northern cities companies are forming and offering their services to the Government. The banks in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago and other cities offer money to the Federal Government. All parties in the North support the Government to put down rebellion. Danger is apprehended of an immediate attack on Washington. The District of Columbia militia have been called out. The militia of Maryland offer their services. All the public buildiwgs avenues and roads are guarded at the Capital, Sentrics are posted everywhere and preparations made to defend the city. War vessels are still fitting out at New York. Lincoln declares he will enforce the laws and repel the attack of the Confederate States force by force. All new regiments are required to take the oath to support the Government. The excitement still increases at the north. Meetings are heli in the large towns ané cities, and men of all parties declare the G@overnment shall be sustained. Douglas reiterates fealty ta the Union and advises the people to remain true to the country’s flag. Sectesiontets were driven out of Baltimore or compelled to hoist the stais and stripes. In Philadelphia they were threatened with hanging. ‘The New York Herald office was threatened and compelled to run up the American flug. The war spirit at the South is increasing. — Joff. Davis declares seventy-five thousand times 75,000 of Liucolu’s soldiers can not subdue the pouth. Lincoln’s proclamation is laughed at and Davis says he will march to Washington and take it ic thirty days, Sonthern Banks offer loans and companies aro forming ix all the seceded states.
