article on “the effect of — on the cy Building “ se Sean ic

article contains several statements ae senting a = ees
which would be remarkable if true. t “ + —aannNnNe™
One is that Boston, grown rich by
her trade with the South, tras been . Total amount of Revenue collected from the 13th day of Feb.
crippled, and is decaying from her
taking the lead inthe dissemination
of anti-slavery doctrines. Says the
writer: “the South with instinctive .
dignity and proper resentment withdrew®¥ that immense and lucrative patronage which she had so long bestowed upon Boston, and that city has ever since vainly endeavored fo recover from the bluw which was given to
her growth and prosperity.” St.
Louis is cited as anotlter remarkable
instance of the decay of a@ city from
“fanatical intermeddling.” ~The people of north and north-west Missouri,”
continues the writer, “are retaliating
upon St. Louis, aid sending their produce to find 4 wiarket elsewhere.”
These statemerts are too glaring to
need contradiction. Boston is this
day enjoying a magnificent trade with
the South. It is fully to talkeof the
South withdrawing patronage from
Boston or any other northern port.
Hinman nature isthe same thé world
over, particularly that part of it which
promps to buy cheap and sell dear.
Boston s¢nds down Het wares in her
own vessels-to Southern ports the
same as ever and the factors sell their
cotton, sugar and rice, take goods in
exchange as they have always done
and always wifl do so long as the
Bostonians give them good or better
ba?gains than anybody else. Nothing short of a splendid array of figures can satisfy intelligent people
that Boston is decaying at all, much
Tess for the cause assigned.
As for St.Louis, the allegations of
the National are laughable. We con* . :
gratulate the citizens of St. Louis upon the retaliation of ‘north and northwést Missour:* and wish them more
of it continually. Such retaliating
seems to be. building up one of the
gréatest cities of the west whose influence promises soon to make the
henip and tobacco of the slavery retaliators of-“north and north-west
Missouri” not.worth saving from that
“other market” fley have chosen.
Scwitier °FestivaL.—Owing to
the horrid weather of Thursday of
last week, it was thought best to dispense with orations in honor of Schilet at'the Theatre and confine al! demonstrations to thé-Court House, which
was actordingly done. The Court
Room wag tastefully decorated with
evergreens, and bung with shields on
which were painted the names of the
pritrcipai poets of every nation. The
German and” Ameriean flags were
planted over the° door. The“mnusic
Was of superior quality, Schmitsneider,
Plumhoff, and others being employed
for the tecasion. A more magnificent
supper has never been spread in the
mountains, consisting of every imagi-~
nable article oftood. It was gotten
up by Mr. Stumpf, who proved himself a caterer of the first class.
Thirty-two ladies were in attendance and some fifty gentlemen, and
# happier time‘has rarely bedn ‘witnessed. Tli¢ dancing continued till
daylight, when the company. dispers~
ed thoroughly satisfied that no effort
had been spared to render the party a‘
pleasarit oneycerft thit none had failed to enjoy it. ©:

Attest,
Tue Insurrecrion in VinGinia,
It is ashame that no event however
trivial in'importauce can oecur but
party presses will attempi making pox!
litical out of it. ‘The late servile insurrection in Virginia is made use of
by the Democratic papers as a bughear to frighten people to the support
of that party. They will have it
that the Opposition is responsible for
the hair-brained, crazy actions of old
Brown. A handful’ of mopomanists,
only twenty-two in all, made an insane attempt to overthrow the State
Government of Viginia, and Mr Seward, if weare to believe the New York
erald, although six months-or more
ti Europe is at the bottom of it! Oth-! On Friday E
er papers with about the same reason
will have #aifthe entire north implieatéd in the mad transaction,
Now, we have no disposition to retaliate, but had we, it strikes us there
is much more reason to attribute a
dispesition on the part of sldves to!
rise in servile insurrection t¢ the!
gourse puysued by these lying Demoératic jéurnals theiiselves, as has
beet suggested by'ghe ‘of pur cotemporaries, It tias been tlie constant
endeavor of these mendacious. sheets
to create an impression that four-fifths
of the millions of the north are Abolitionists, and desirous of aiding and
assisting slaves to cut the throats of
their masters. Democratic papers
circulating in the south teem with
such stateménts. It is an old adage,
what is told in the parlor is soon
known in the kitchen. The negroes
hear and believe these truthless’ reports, They learn, a8 they suppose,
that within a few hours ride by railroad there are mep.and munitions of
war in exhaustless abundance ready
for their assistance,-and that all they . name Friday Evening. Nov. 18th.
have to do isto raise the standard of

. gtand and hold out till the sympathi. zing whites of the north come flock. ing to their aid. It isa wonder that
more ingurrections, more throat-cutfingd.do not take place in the south,
and can only be accounted for by the
upposition that the negro slaves have
sagacity enough to.estimate Democrati@’papers at theirtrue gauge for
truth and veracity. “~~ :
