Treaty to be ratified within a year by the United States, and by the Emperor forthwith. The English and French have also obtained satisfactory treaties with the same power. The English treaty contains fifty-six articles, and, as far as we can see, is as satisfactory as could possibly be looked In brief, by Article 9, Briti-h snbjects may travel for pleasure or trade By Articles four ports in the Yang-tse for. to all parts of the interior. 1Oand 11, Kiang. Gulf of Pecheli, one on Formesa, ane in Hainan, and another on the coast of China, in all nine, added to the present five Consular ports; that is, ports to which special Superintendents of Trade will be deputed for the managemert and festering of foreign commerce. By Article 28, arrangements are made for securing traders against extortionate transit duties. Article 2 and 6 provide for amhassadors both at Pekin and St. James. Article 8 tolerates Christianity throughout the Empire. Article 26 provides for revision of tariff. The French Treaty is supposed to be similar to the English. one in Manchoria, one in the are any other granted to English, Frenel* TER LL A, SEEN 7 OREN SeIOR CONEY So Neer” nea AIRS VTNapEE, Ome RE ER CE ee EE SO aaa sec ca perenne ott a EE nk enn A Quaker Joke.—K » the Quaker. President of a Pennsylvania. railroad, during the Confusion ind panic last fall, called upon the W , with wh'eli the road had kepta large regular aecount, and asked for ai extension of 4 part of its paper filling due in a few days. The Bank President declined rather abruptly. saying. in a tone common with that fraternity : “Mr. K., your paper must be paid at maturity. We cannot renew it.” “Very well,” our Quaker replied, and left the bank. But he did not let the matter drop here. On leaving the bank he walked quietly S¢ér to the depot, and telegraphed all the agents and éondaic: tors of the road to reject the bills of the W Bank. In a few hours, thé trains began to arrive, full of panie, and bringing the news of the distrust of the w— Bank all along the line of the road. Stockholders and depositors came flocking into the Hank; making thé panié inguiry, “What's the matter? Is the bank broke?” A little inquiry by the officers showed that the trouble origina. ted in the rejection of the bills by thé railroad. The President seized his hat and rushed down to the Quaker’s office; aud came bustling in with the inquiry ? ‘Mr. K., have you directed the refusal of our ennency by your agents i “Yes,” was the quiet reply. oW hy is this? It will ruin us ?” “Well, mend L——, J supposed thy bank was about to fail, as thee could not renew a little paper for us this morning.” Mr. L renewed all the Quaker’s paper, and enlarged his line of discount, while thé magic wires carried all along th road, to every agent, the sedative message: — “The W Bank is all right. Thee may take its currency. ” It is needless to say, Beenanan ann Dovcuas. — Only little more than a month ago, President Buchanan reappointed several Postmastersand other Kederal officers in Illi nois, who were known to be friends of Judge Douglas. This was hailed at the time as evidence that the President’s hostility to the supporters of Douglas in Mlinois was not as bitter &nd vindictive asit had been represented to be. Within a week or two past, however, the President has been turning out some of the very men he thus re-appointed, Brooks, tLe editor of the Quirey Heraid, a leading janti-Lecompton Douglas paper, was among the postmasters reappointed as aforesaid. In his next paper after receiving his re-appointment, he said: “We shall regard our own reappointment as an approval, on the part of the President, of our general course as a Democrat and an editor, 45 well as of our official conduct. We shall regard it as evidence that he does not prefer the election of a Black Republican 6f@ Know-Nothing to the United States Seiiate, over Judge Douglas.” To show him how much _ he was mistaken in these views, the President in? continently removed him from the office to which he liad & lately been reappointed. INDIAN Fanpanco. —A gathering of the Indians from the various tribes of the Tuolumne, Stanislaus, and Cala: veras, took place near Columbia a short time ago. Among the exercises upon such occasions, is that ofan oration from some one chosen from the assemblage, who relates the history f his ancestors; their achievements in battle and the le: gends which followed in the path of tradition. The ceremony of washing; or removing of mourning also takes place. The mourning 4reés consists of tar and pitch, the ashes of their hair and a peculiar kind of blacking known only to themselves. The term of mourning seldoti lasis over three months, and closed on oceasidns before stated: All who are in mourning are collected in & line ; willow bowls fuil of water are thet placed in front of them and officials are appointed to perform the duties of washing. The motrners are then stripped naked, the clearsing is effected, when they are again conducted to the camp; and are prepared to join in the amuse: meuts and sports of the fandango: Tue First Kiss.—Am I really dear, Sophia ® I whispered and” pressed my burning lips to her tosy mouth; She did not say “yes,” she did not say “no,” but she returned my kiss, and the earth went from under my feet, and my soul was no longer in my body. I touched the stars, 1 knew the happiness of the Seraphim! The above is all of this debply exciting story that we can pubtish. The remainder can be found in the New Yorks Blower, of April 1st, which has four millions more subscribers than there are inhabitants in China? Korn Kob writes for it—P. Knutts writes for it, and ’tis sold everywhere in the world and out of it.
