Leos Angeles The list is divided into day to show where we spent daylight and dark. ness, what country we saw and what we did not see. The proprietors of the tele. graphic line from San Francisco to Los An. geles say the total distance is not less than 500 miles, for they provided 480 miles of wire, which fell 20 miles short, notwithatunding the numerous short cuts wherein the telegraphic line spared some miles necessary to a wagon road. Not unfrequently the distance is made from San Francisco in 72 hours.” The Hawalinan Prince. San Francisco is blessed to-day with the presence of alive prince—Prince Lot Kamehameha—a representative of the only nation . which has ever sent a member of its royal family to our shore. . We trust that the visit of Prince Kameha. meha to California wil bea pleasant one, and that he will receive the honors, and be the gentleman anda prince of a friendly and treated with consideration, due to a. near nation. It is pleasant to know thatour rulers will give hima kindly greeting to our shores. . Governor Downey, General Clark, and the Board of Supervisors—the representatives . of the Federal, State and City Governments —will call upon him to-day. To-morrow, . or the day after.he and his suite will probaj bly start on a tour to the interior, to see the mineral wonders of our mountains and the . agricultural wonders of our valleys. How . long they will stay in our State we have not} been able to learn, but it will probably not be long—not more than a week or two. The Prince says he does net recognize Anything of San Francisco, as it was in. 1849 and 1850, save some of the hills. The present occasion may not be inap. propriate to make a few remarks upon the nationality which “ His Royal Highness”— . that is his title—represents for the time amoung us. The Hawaiian kingdom is a group of island lying about 2,000 miles south-west of our port, in the 20th degree of north latitude. The people, who number about 70,000, are all Christians, and educated, at least to the extent of being able to . read and write. Many of them speak English, which has of late been made the language of all the schools, so that the native Hawaiian tongue is doomed to certain extinction within a few generations, and the . tongue of the Anglo-Saxons will have another conquest. The islands are commercially much nearer and more closely related to the United States than to any other country. A great majority of the foreigners on the islands, and the vessels visiting . them, are American ; ncarly all their foreign trade is done with and by us, and the ma. jority of the foreigners in the Cabinet are Americans. Mr. Gregg, an American, is . > . Minister of Finance; Mr. Armstrong, an . American, is Minister of Public Instruction: and Elisha H. Allen, an American, is Presiding Judge of the Supreme Court. The/. only foreign member of the Cabinet, not an American, is R. C. Wyilie. Prince Kamehameha is Minister of the Army and Navy, and Victoria, the King’s sister, who takes . the title of Kaahumanu, is Premier by right} of inheritance. Nearly all the trade of the islands is done with the American whale } BuUNpDERS oF THE “Censvus.—The S. F./ Bulletin of a recent date says that the cenEstablished by the Koard of Supervisors on . —— . sus returns have seriously disappointed ev. erybody. It was supposed we had a popu‘lation of over half a million souls, whereas . . itig by no means certain that the census . will credit us with 400,000. It is not at all . improbable that the estimated figures had . ' been somewhat exaggerated, but there is good reason to believe that we have lost . ELECTION PRECINCTS, Wednesday, Oct. 3d. Present, 'T. H. Rolfe, . 3. x, wcoxsett, Dr. Davis and H, Everett: Nevada Tswnship. Nevada Precinct—At Court House; T. T. Davenport, Inspector; Henry MeCarty, A. W. Pot. ter, Judges, Blue Tent Precinet—At Cooper's Store: F. G. Armour, Inspector; J. W. Coleman, Chas. Dodd, Judges. Vanderleith’s Precinct—At Vanderleith’s: E. one Member of Congress in consequence of WHollerman, Inspector; Thos. Alexander, Wm. ; to . Marysville d gross carelessness on the part of the cencus-takers. The city of San Francisco, instead of countiug up a population of 80,000, dwindles down to 60,000 only. It difficult to believe that this great, busy and is prosperous city is justly dealt by in the! enumeration which places her figures at so low a mark. Those whose pursuits in compiling our City Directory for several years . past have given them unusual facilities for forming a correct opinion on the subject are confident that a careful enumeration would give us from 78,000 to 80,000 inhabitants. Well authenticated failure by the census-marshals to obtain instances of the required statistics are numerous, as any man may ascertain by inquiring of his neighbors whether they were called upon for the needed information. We mention asingle case related to us: Some days since, five gentlemen were dining on board the . steamer Queen City, when the subject of the census came up for discussion, and upon . comparing notes, only two of the number were found to have received the attention of the census-takers, although all save one were men of families. Pushing their inquiries stili further, it was ascertained that nobody had ever been on board the Queen . City to enumerate the forty men who live on her decks, and have no homes elsewhere. And such we have reeson to believe is the experience of thousands of our people. It would seem that some, at least, of the subordinate census ageats were quite incom. . petent to fulfil the important duties assigns ed them—that they overlooked many per. sons who should have been recorded their tables, and passed by all the rest whenever any obstacle to easy enumeration presented itself. We repeat it, as our well settled conviction, that this culpable carelessness has robbed the State of at least one Congressman, and has lost San Francisco alone, 2from 15,000 to 20,000 in the enumeration of her population.— Bulletin. A Joun Beit at Saratroca.—One of the reporters of the London Jimes, has lately of Of Saratoga Springs several intere t in States. visited the United he thus writes: places * Saratoga, as a place of . fashionable resort, is, in its season, one of . the most extraordinary places of its kind, perhaps, inthe world. The village is a mere accident of the situation; the hotels are Saratoga, and they are such hotels only America can show. Two of them, the United States and Union Hall, acres of ground! occupy The dining salooas are . bigger than the Floral Hall, and are laid with tables to dine 1000 people. ing rooms are larger, loftier and handsomer . than any two public rooms of the kind we have in all London. The grounds attached to these are almost little parks, where, between the trees, are detached cottages, all belonging to the hotel, and occupied by wealthy Southerners and others, willing to pay any price for that inestimable luxury in America—a little privacy. To these hotels and to Saratoga generally fsome 5,000 peo. ple come in the season to drink the waters, dress, drive, lounge, gamble and away again, after a six weeks’ stay, to Newport, Niagara, or any other place where American citizens ina holiday can enjoy that idle and luxurious life to which they seem particularly given.—Bulletin. Survey or BounpDary BeETWrEN OREGON AND Wasmineton Ternitony.—The Washington Star says of proposed suryey of the boundary line bej tween Oregon and Washingjon Territory : Co:. gress having made an appropriation of $4,590 for the survey of the 46th parallel of north latitude . So far as it constitutes a comman boundary between Oregon and Washington Territory, it is proposed by the General Land Office tohave the . boundary surveyed under the joint supervi ion . of the Surveyor General of Oregon and Washing. ton Territory, by an astronomer or surveyor familiar and skillful in the determination of latitudes. The following is a statement of the requirements on the part of the astronemer or surveyor so appointed. The boundary is to be determined by astronomical observation at three diferent points; the first for ascertaining the . point of intersection of the 46th parallel north latitude with the Columbia river, in the vicinity of Walla Walia river; the second for determin. ing the intersection of that parallel of latitude . with the Snake river; parallel at an intermediate point between the two first points. Each of these three points will . have to be perpetuated by suitable and enduring monuments. Beside these monuments the bcun dary line will be marke by mile-stones or posts in mounds, counting from the initial peint on the Columbia river.—Corres. S. F. Bulletin.
