A. A. BARGENT EDITOR, FRIDAY MORNING, OGTOBER 14. Enlargement. Owing to the great pressure ef advertisements, we shall be compelled to again enlarge. We have ordered larger paper from the Bay, and shall enlarge owr next number if the paper arrives in season. We tender our thanks to our patrons for their appreciation ef our paper as a business sheet, as evinced in the vast amount of advertising that has poured in upon us of late, and to our subscribers who are so rapidly extending the circulation and influance of our paper. We have no time for solicitation for busin ess, ms kes The Union says salmon are yet taken in considerable quantities from the Sacramento, and that the home market is limited. Send us a few this way. yen. The poetry on the first page to “R. D.” was sent to a young widower in this city from the States, written in a pretty lady's handwriting. No clue to the authorship accompanied the tender missive. ye@. The Marysville Herald gives a glowing account of the improvements in that city and vicinity, and coneludes it is the second in importance in the state. hes~ A city directory for Marysville has been ued. The Oregon arrived at San Francisco on the 12th, 15 days from Panama. The steamer Georgia left N. York on the 5th ult. for Aspinwall. During a heavy gale she sprung aleak, and was with difficulty got into Norfolk, Va., where she sunk in 20 feet of water after disembarking the passengers and mails. Adams & Co.’s express goods were saved, but most of the other expresses lost theirs. Per contra, the Panama Star learns the Georgia had not sunk, but was soon to sail for New York. The yellow fever still continues at New Orleans, declining however. The same disease ragesat Mobile. The amount of relief that had reached New Orleans was about $200,000. The Alta of the 10th gives the following interesting table of statistics of Mexican land claims in California : NO. OF ACRES. NO. CLADVED. Nevapa, Oct, 13th, 1853. Ep. Journat, :—The Young America has a leader in the last number on the subject of a railroad to Sacramento, also giving its views on the project of the Marysville plank road, and in conclusion asks. “Do our citizens care anything about a road, and if so will some of them speak ?” The writer being one of the citizens of Nevada will speak for himself without pretending to know what is the public sentiment. In the first place, 1 believe now and always have that the interest of Nevada county avill be best promoted by building a road to Sacramento. I belicvea railroad would enable the Nevada merchants to sell goods in the summer and fall as low as the Marysville merchants. I believe the road could be built as easy to Sacramento as Marysville. as it would pass through a more wealthy district, and Placer county would give it its aid. I haveno more reason to believe in the present promises of Marysville than the past. The public know their past action. I am in favor ofa railroad to Sacramento, and believe that if it was now completed it would be better stock than the average of Atlantic railroad stock, and that the business on the road would rapidly increase. But, I do not believe there is spare capital in Sacramento, Yuba, Placer and Nevada combined to build a rail or plank road to either point, and will not be while business men can make 3 to 5 per cent. per month on the capital, by using it themselves. I believe if a company was properly organized and judiciously managed our citizens would take stock sufficient to prove their confidence in the enterprize, and foreign capitalists would take the remainder, and a railroad would be built to Sacramento. Cirizen. ere i sissies Ss ES Correspondence of the Journal. RASS VaLLey, Oct. 12, 1853. Correspondence of the Journal. San Francisco, Oct. 11, 1853. . Eprror Journar—Sir :--The bright sun and balmy atmosphere of a New England August, of to-day, contrasts favorably with the cold, bleak and chilly winds, which have characterized our climate for the past ten days. There was quite a heavy fall of rain on Sunday night last, doing no little damage to goods which merchants had stored upon the side walks, and which constituted aserious impediment to free locomotion for pedestrians. The fall trade has finally commenced. There are many purchasers from the country, the auctions are well attended and large quantities of goods change hands and often at prices that do not pay first cost in New York. Importers have had an up-hill business for the past season, while, as a general thing the Jobbers have done a good business. The credit system is rapidly ingrafting itself upon the commercial customs of this city. The combination of flour speculators has been unable to keep up the prices of Flour above afair profit on the cost of importation. The flags of our shipping are now at half mast, in consequence of the death of Capt. E. Knight, long the active, efficient and popular Agent of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. I understand that the disease which terminated his earthly existence was pleurisy. Captain K. resigned his position as agent of the Co. about & month since and designed to have sailed in the “Panama” on the Ist inst., for New York, but was detained by an attack which terminated his life this morning at 9 o’clock. In his demise the Church of Christ has lost an active member, and the canse of total abstenance a brilliant example, and a fast and devoted friend. The mail has been thirty-five days from New York and the non-arrival of the Oregon which is now over-due some five or six days, has awakened serious apprehensions for her safety.— Firemen’s Benerit.-—Owing to the non arrival of the machinery and “fixins” of M. Chevalier from San Francisco in time for an exhibition of ledgerdemain on last Thursday evening it was postponed for one week. It will take place on next Thursday evening, and we trust the publie will turn out to put the means in the hands of the fire organization to protect the city from conflagration. bes” One of the latest Paris fashions for gon. tlemen is the “ barber pole” pattern for trousers ; the stripes ascend spirally round the leg, giving the wearer the appearance of a double barrelled corkscrew. The resources of Grass Valley at present consist principally, a most entirely, in mining in its various departments, and lumbering.— This last, probably, is not so well appreciated. I have taken some little care to ascertain the amount and value of this business. The number of feet of lumber manufactured daily within the limits of Grass Valley may be set down at 65,000 fect. This, as about one-sixth of it is planed, at Winchester’s and the Mt. George Mills, will average $30 per 1000 feet, making a gross income from this branch of nearly $2000 per diem.
