Democratic Meeting.
Flaming posters, private letters,
urgent entreaties and booming cannon,
called the unwashed together on Saturday night. This was to be the great
meeting of the canvass. A band of
music was @mAployed, and artists plied
their sickly trade days in advance for
the glorification of the party. — The
news passed from mouth to mouth that
the g-r-e-a-t Charley Scott, Fy F. V.,
and “Tpsedoodle,” would address the
Democracy. © As'might have*been expected, a métley erew assembled. Dr.
Knox was toted Chairman, but Dr.
Knox wasn’t “thar.” D. Belden was
offered as a substitute. Two noes objected. Mr. Belden made the night
radient with his smiles. Fifteen claps
and one abortive cheer testified approbation. Then came the pepigram.—
Scott bowed, Scott smiled, Scott said,
“Fell-o-w citizens!” Eighteen’ claps,
six and a half attempts at articulate
sounds greeted Charley Scott.

got tired of his vapid insipidity and pantomine, and were restless for something
better. The Fillmore Club, in session
not far off, offered a delightful contrast.
Hundreds crowded for the hall, till it
would no longer hold them. An adjournment was effected to the street in
front of the National Exchange. A procession was formed, which reached from
the Journal office to the United States
Hotel. The air was rent with cheers
for Millard Fillmore and the Union.—

ing up the night with the glare of noonday, while deafening cheers again and
again were repeated, at the delivery of
a well-told truth, or the rounding of a
beautiful period. The American boys
made themselves hoarse with hurrahs
that came from the bottom of the heart.
As might have been expected, the
American meeting thinned the Democracy terribly. At ten o’clock the adjourned meeting of the Fillmore Club

and the yells of triumph bursting forth
spontaneously at every moment electrified his heart. Youth was restored, and
its ardor and impetuosity breathed in
every sentence that fell from the Dr.’s
lips. Everybody was delighted, the
speaker in eestacies, and full justice
was done on all hands.
At alate hour the crowd dispersed
with three rousing cheers for Millard
Fillmore and Andrew Jackson Donelson,
Scott ended his gestures some time
after he begun.
A. C. Bradford made a fool of himself
by saying that if the Fugitive Slavelaw
should be repealed the South would, and
ought to dissolve the Union. His remarks were ultra-southern, like those of
northern dough-heads generally. But
few talk of the repeal of that law, and
a speaker must be badly cramped for
ideas to get up the question. Put the
question to Mr. A. C. Bradford—ask him
if the Fugitive Slave law, or any other
law is repealed, if he will advocate dissolution. If he answers in the affirmative, his chance for being Elector is
much slimmer than at present.
After Bradford had eased himself of
considerable niggerism,
“Then wandered forth a son of Belial,
Flown with insolence and wine.”
A white-livered compound of treachery,
drunkenness and seurrility. He just
suits the Democracy. They yell over
him. They think he is smart, and he
thinks so too. He ended the meeting
very properly. Low farces should come
last if at all.

night were the best that could have

My Last Lorrsry.—It was in

my dear wife, of blessed memory, in my
little parlor on Canal street, that overlooked the traftie on the Hudson river,
: Noas I

affairs of the past day, and cogitating in
my mind how I could raise a little
money to pay offa debt for which I had
become partly responsible to oblige a
friend, when my attention was attracted
to an extraordinary appearance in the
fire-place, Between the red hot coals.—
“My dear,” said I, “do you see anything
remarkable i in the ag “just now ¢ here,
where I sit.” “Yes, I do,” said she—
“What, a figure? Yes,” she replied, ‘a
two’ —“Yes,” “and a four,’—“exactly”
“and a seven, and I think something
like a five. The very number! How
extraordinary ! I have this my self, beL stirred
the fire; still some of the numbers were
visible ; at least, I fancied so, although
they had vanished from my wife’s observation. I went to bed, and the next
told my wife
how I had dreamed more than once
purchasing a ticket that came up a prize
bought by this very number. Said she,
“Dear Hus., (she used to call me hus—
Bless her heart; be

have dreamed the very same thing ;
nay, more, I dreamt it tice, So hav e
I, if not thrice: and more than that,”
said she, “I thought you had bought
Hopkins’ little cottage at Brooklyn, and
his little poney, and his beautitul harness, and 1 was so happy in driving you
out in it.’
“Say no more,” said I, “I go this very .
morning to the lottery ticket atiice.”
I wot to the office in good time, and
with breathless anxiety enquired if 2475 . )
had been sold. . No, the wholeof it was
at my service. ‘I paid down with joy
the price of it, and flew home to my
wife — although pre business
awaited me at my sthee-cend placed it
in her hands, received a rapturous kiss
from her dear, dear lips, and for once in
my life was happy.
‘Well, the day, the important day, big
with the fate of Cato (myself) and of
Rome, (itese-tree Cottage) at last arI tooked over the prize numbers,
mine certainly was not there. I looked
again with the same result. I then, to
make surely doubly sure, examined the
blanks, and sure enough, mine stood
among them as plain as black types
could express anything. A few days
afterwards, the girl had just raked out
the cinders of the fire, and was blackeading the stove. Before lighting the
fire I saw—yes, I saw, to my utter astonishment, these very numbers on the
back of the stove; the founder’s number for his stoves, 1 suppose. 1 could

stick I held in my hand.
“My dear,” said my wife, when I
came home in the evening, “what was
the matter with you this morning ?—
Amelia says she never saw you so agitated before. Her nose is swollen as
big as a turnip

know what against you; she says you
hurled the silverplated candlestick with
all your might against her, and for what
she don’t know.’
“Sweet one,” said I, “tell her this
story of ourlast lottery, and if that don’t
make the swelling go down, I will go
down on my knees to her, for dawdle as .
she is, it is enough to make the stones
in the streets laugh.’
My sweet one laughed as heartily as
myself at the oddity. of the thing when
she heard of it, and saw the same figures
in the stove, and thus ended my first
and last lottery.
A Heroic Wire.—A passenger on
board the Northern Indiana when she
burnt gives an account of the narrow escape of Cicero Fowler and wife of ‘Tully
New York. There was but one life-preserver for Mrs. Tully and husband ; he .
insisted imperatively that she should put
it on ; she peremptorily refused, saying
“she was in poor healthand his life was
worth far more than hers!” The preserver having no strap, Mrs. F. tore the
hem from her dress, and fastened it to
her husband, whom she continued to encourage, say she could hold on to him,
and if the preserver could not sustain
them both, she would be the one to let
go and leave him to save himself. The
fire was getting hotter and hotter. ‘The
water was thick with human forms
struggling for life ; she tore her bonnet,
already on fire, from her head, and hand
in hand with one she loved better than
herself, took the dangerous leap. As
they arose from the water, Mr. Fowler
assisted his wife in procuring a good
hold of him on or about the shoulders.
She wiped the water from his mouth
and eyes, and encouraged him to retain
his hope of being saved. He continued
to struggle with the waves. Half an
hour elapsed, and there were no signs of
assistance. His strength was rapidly
failing; his wife observing it, tried anew
to élicer him. He said he could not
stand it any longer; it seemed as though
he must give up. At that menent she
heard a steamer coming rapidly through
the water. She says, “My dear husband, a few moments more and we are
safe, Don’t you hear a boat coming?’
He said he aid, and immediately revived,

Nature has qualified man to breathean

There the people are hee ilthy—and another at Iranconia, N. H., where the

any place with which I am in corres. pondence on the American continent,

years and ten. It is the quality of the
changed air that constitutes the difference that physicians notice, and not the
temperature.
