. \ Resignation of Judge Curtis—The Boston Courier confirms the rumor that Judge Curtis has resigned his seat on the bench of the Supreme Court of the United States. He has been led to take this step from reasons growing out of his private affairs. Judge Curtis re ceived his appointment from President Fillmore in 1851, at the special instance. it was said, of Daniel Webster, who had the highest opinion of his abilities. His circuit embraced the States of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and his successor will doubtless be selected by President Buchanan from the members of the bar in one of those States. Mr. Toucey, the Secretary ofthe Navy, is already named to succeed him. It will be remembered that Judge Curtis was one of the judges who dissented from the decision of the Supreme Court in the famous Dred Scott case. The Washington States says the resig nation of Judge Curtis has been received by the President. Justice Curtis, it is said, resigns on account of his private affairs, and not from any dissatisfaction with the views of the majority of the body. Tue Back Action Spanxer.—In the life of the celebrated E. Stubbs, we find the following interesting description of his wonderful “back action spanker:” “On being attached toa baby of any age, it (the spanker,) watches over it like a mother, makes it to desist from swallering thimbles, marbles, and threecent pieces, pins, or any other food unsuited to its stomach; compels it to goto sleep when it doesn’t want to; and if some-what older it sees that it keeps its hand off the sugar bowl and jam pots; besides making it keep its face clean.” A Large Fisu.—aA fish was taken in & seine near Saucelito, on Saturday, says the San Francisco Chronicle, which measured six feet two inches in length, four feet around, and weighed one hundred and eighty-seven pounds. The fellow was cut up and sold out to sundry and various persons yesterday. It was sweet and good to the taste, as we can testify, having partaken of a “steak” on purpose to try it. It is a mooted point among fishermen as to what class of fish the monster belongs, but we believe it is generally known along the coast as the “Jew Fish.” southern Glass Manufacture—The existence of vast beds of voleanic glass inthe Clear Lake region has long beena fact familiar to many of our readers. The Napa Reporter says this glass is about to become of some practical value, and adds: Major Sterling has discovered an inexhaustible bed of the article upon his claim, only sixteen miles from Napa City, and finds, on analysis and experiment, that it contains all the elements necessary for the production of a valuable and colorless glass. A slight additioa only of soda ash, or similar alkaline substance, is required. We are informed that a company is already organized and stock taken, and thata manufactory will shortly be commenced on the spot, and another in San Francisco. A Forerunner of Winter.-—At Gibson. ville, Sierra county, on Sunday morning, . Oct. 18th, ice was formed half an inch in thickness. T. I feel that I am indebted to your Bitters for my recovery from this awful disease. My habits at this time were sedentary, and my complaint was aggravated by too close confinement I despaired of relief, and considered myself.a hopeless dyspeptic. San Francisco Advertisements: Tothe Citizens of Caliivraia! tr CAUTION! 24 AM INFORMED that varions liquor-mixers of New York, Boston, and San Francisco, are extensively engaged in putting up in square bottles, under various titles, cheap i:itatiotis of my lofig established and renowned Wolfe’s Scheidam Aromatic Schnapps. Which adulterated compounds are intended to sell in California against my genuine article. My object is toannounce that have recently established an AGENCY IN SAN FRAN ‘T-CO for supplying the State and Oregon with my Schnapps, and that hereafter I will always keep said agency supplied with a large stock ; so that respectable druggists and liquordedlers throughout California can always supply themselves at a regular price, merely enough over the New York, price to cover cost of freight and charges ; thus avoiding complaint as heretofere, of occasional scarcity and extreme high price Itis now many years since I first imported these Schnapps from the celebrated distillery in “cheidam, Holland. in which I am interested. It is now conceded that no Gin was ever imported into this country which has approached my Schnapps in regard to PU RIT Y, HEAL PHFULNESS, and EXQUISITE AROMA or flavor. This Iclaim, and for proof, point to their univer sal popularity and the immense and increastng consumption by all classes, north and south, east and west, comprisingthe temperince people. miedical faculty, &c., 0 such an extent that my estabiishment, packing the enor mous quantity of 8,000 botdes per day, is barely able to fill its orders. : Also, the Wolfe’s Schnapps have been analyzed by the most celebrated Chemists, Drs. Mott and Deck, of NewYork, and others -vho will certify that they area Perfectly Puré Medical Tonic. Invalnabie a3 4 remedy against Bad Water, Gravel, Indigestion, Dyspepsia, Debility, &e. They also certify that they found my Schnapps to be free from Arnylic Alcohol or Fusil Oil, an exceedingly hurtful ingredient, found in all common Gin, which Dr. Mott describes as fetid, acrid, and Asthmatical and productng irreparable effects upon the nerves and stomach.” The certificates also prove my Schnapps perfectly clear of “the second or heavier Essential Oil or Juniper, also a dangerous component, produced by the aver distillation practiced to increase the quantity in making ordinary Gin.” The-e statements are made with a view to ittvite com parison fi California betweou the gentiine Wolfe's -chnapps, and the various be1i'» of bogus imitations, mixed, doctered up, or sweetened Gin ; in sqtiare, black bottles, (imitation of my style of tottles) under different names and labels, whe‘her marked London, Germany, Holland Schcidam ~chnapps, &c., in_ infinite veriety— confident that the trial will result in Caiifornia just as it has long since done in dil the older States, in repudiating all the bogtts, tinwholesome imitations referred to, and the complete triumph of my pure Scheidam Schnapps. I desire Uriefly to notice two facts which have lately added largely to the use of Wolfe's Schnapps in the city of New York and elsewhere. Ist, Pure French Brandy it is Now almost impossible to obtain—nearly all the brandy imported from France being American raw spirits sent there, made into brandy. and shipped back again. 2d, Many yoogie are alandoning the use of American whisky, brandy atl gin, since it has teen discovered that STRYCHNINE, a deadly poison, isin use at the west in distilling, therely increasing the yield of liquor about one-third. 3 In coneldsion, 1 will say to all who desire a wholesdme, agreeable tonic and stimulant, give a fair trial to WOLFE’S SCHHIDAM AROMATIC SCHNAPP UDOLPHO WOLFE, Sole importer, jy24-3m-is 22 Beaver street, New York SHAW & WHITNEY, : (Success6fs to Shaw & Jones,) FORWARDING MERCHANT Ss, SACRAMENTO.
