PRENUE proprietor offers his aotel to the notice See the. best accommodations are furnished, and } . takes an oath to undertake no cause which he does not consider just. We know whet it could be imitated to advantage. } Two things can never be successfully counterfeited~-common sense and modesty. Slander is the revenge of a coward: . dissimulation has no defence. Crimes shock us too much, vices almost always too little. Riches got by deceit, cheat no man so much as the getter, Few envy the merit of others that have any of their own. Mrs. Partington says that nothing despises her so much as to see people who profess to expect salvation, go to church without their purses when a reflection is to be taken. A young lady who was rebuked bs her mother for kissing her intended justified herself by quoting the pas sage :— What#oever ye would tha’ men should do unto you, do you even 80 unto them.” At Genoa, it is said, every attorney aisaeNil tn would cost more than $4,000,000 to construct tue front embankment of this huge water reservoir. What must have been the causes which exterminated the people who erected these works (and they must have been nuIn-. merous) and left them to fall into ruins, . tenanted ouly by the buffalo and unclad savage? The savage is surely not the natural, but the unnatural state of man--the savage is man shipsocial position. Be Gentirwen at Home.--There are few familics, we imagine, any where, in whieh love is not abused as furnishing @ license for impoliteness: A husband, father, or brother, will speak harsh words to those whom he loves the best, and to those who love him the best, simply because the security of love and family pride keeps him from getting his head broken. It is a shame that a man will speak more impolitely, at times, to his wife or sister, than he would dare to any other female, except a low and vicious one. [t is thus that the holiest affections of man’s nature prove to be a weaker protection to woman in the family circle than the restraints of society, and that a woman is usually indebted for the kindest politeness of life to those not belonging to her own household. Things ought not to be so. The man who, because it will not be resented, inflicts his spleen and bad temper upon those of his hearth-stone, is @smali coward, anda very mean man. Kind words are the circulating medium, between true gentlemen and ‘ever, to know that within the cif . limits there is at present no part whic it is unsafe to visit, no matter wh . may have been the risk in times gon by.—[Herald.
