__-4 _ Che Hebada “Journal Eartuquake. — Two or three slight shocks of an earthquake were felt at San Francisco on Sunday last. The papers tell us mother earth has been grumbling at Stockton, Santa Clara and Santa Barbara also. The old lady will give her children a good shaking by and by for misdeeds. A g2ntleman looking over the catalogue of professional gentleman at the bar, with his pencil wrote against the name of one who was of the bustling order: ‘Has been accused of possessing talents.” Another seeing it, immediate wrote under, “Has been tried and aequitted.” Civility and good breeding,” said Lord Chesterfield, “are as much matters of interest as honesty or virtue.’ [Most of the shadows that cross vur path through life are caused by standing in our own light. ie As a bird is known by his note, so is a man by his discourse. {HThe manwho was filled with emotion, hadn’t room for his dinner. &@# “I say, Pat, what are you about? sweeping out that room?” ‘No,’ answered Pat, “I am sweeping out the dirt and leaving the room.” Mrs. Partinaron.—Says Mrs. Partingington, ‘When a woman has once married to a congealing heart, and one that beats responsible to her own, she will pever wantto enter the maritime state agin.” An Irishman in Chicago has just discovered a substitute for potatos. It consisticf pork and cabbage. He says he has tried various other things, but this is the only “substitute” that he’d like to warrant. > The S.F. dence interposed to save the nation in the death of Harrison, and the dread evils which menaced our civil institutiens were happily averted.” What has become of all those praises heaped upon the old Whig party by the Democratic presses in 1856, when the Democracy were in desperate straits ? Then the Old Line Whigs were the remnants of a “glorious and national party.” Now they are said to have been eneamies to the “civil institutions of the country. National says ‘“ProviTo Make Lacee Beer. — Lager is Setting to be a universal beverage. A great deal of money is paid for it which might be saved at home. The followiug is an infalible receipt for making Lager, and may be depended on: “Take a barrel and fill it with rain ‘water, put in one pair of old boots, a head of last fall’s cabbage, two short sixes, a sprig of wormwood, and a little yeast.” Qvartrz Miners’ Convention.—A the meeting of this body, in San Francisco, oa Wednesday, a committee of one from each quertz mining district was elected, whose duty it shall be to correspond with the journal (the Quartz Min«rs' Journal) of the Association, giving such information as shall tend to the interests of the Association. and Quartz miners generally. elected as such Committee : William Maltman, Calaveras, Geo.N. Shaw, Mariposa; J. Flournoy Johnson, Butte; Horatio H. Watson, Placer; Dr. J.W. Steel, El Dorado; Almiran B. Paul, Nevada ; Col. Hagan, Sacramento; A. Heywood, Amador; William G. Heslep, Tuolumne ; H. F. Wood, Sierra; Thos. G. Maltby, Tulare; Mr. Swasey, Shasta; James B. Peck, Stanislaus; John Roané, Fresno; John C. Fall, Yuba. It was rerolved that the committees inthe counties be requested to organize associations in their respective counties, with reference to the general prosperity ofthe quartz mining interest, and that delegates to the annual convention be elected by such organization. It was resolved that the association elect for the ensuing year, two standing committees of three members each, one as acommittee on metalurgical chemistry, and the other a committee on machinery, whereupon the following were chosen: Metalurgical Chemical Committee. — Dr. Hawson, Charles Usnay, R. G. Kilberly. Committee on Machinery.—Wnm. Watt, Nevada; Col. Ross, Tuolumne; A. W. Von Schmidt, Tulare. A resolution was introduced, provid‘ing for the election, in each township or district, of a jury of five honest and <ompetent men, who should be final arbiters in all cases of difficulty that may arise Letween quartz miners, within the sphere of their peculiar business. After considerable discussion, this resolution was voted down. It was resolved that the Mineis’ Journal be published semi-monthly, in San Francisco. Mr. Von Schmidt moved, in effect, that the Convention of the quartz miners of California offer a suitable reward to the invention of the best method of amalgamating quartz, gold and sulphurets, and to have said exhibition of amalgamators take place in this city, at the next annual Industrial Fair of the Mechanics’ Institute, and that a committee be appointed to pronounce on the merits of such mrchines then and there exhibited, and that $i,000 be the amount of reward; laid on the table.
