THE JOURNAL FRIDAY MORNING, Sept. 9, 1859 Fisning oR THE Foreign VotTe.-— The earnest efforts put forth by all parties in the election just closed to secure the foreign vote, shows that it isan im-. portaut accession to any party that can gain it. In fact every intelligent man knows that the naturalized citizens .of this state hold the balance of political power. Consequently we have seen the administration presses of the State asseverate that the Leeompton Demoeracy was the legitimate Democracy of the country and, of course, the only true friends of foreigaers. terrible outery against the Republicans because in Massachusetts they had incorporated a clause in the State constitution compelling a foreignerto wait two years after naturalization before he could vote. The fact that the Republieans had so done in oue State is proof positive that the party in all the States is not friendly to foreigners, said the Lecomptons. On'the other hand the Anties have struggled through the canvass to prove themselves the real, unadulterated, simon-pure Democrats, and with the aid of the Cass-LeClere and Cass-Hofer letters they have made votes for themselves with a plausible argument. The poor Republicans, not being able to obtain the open ear ofthe foreigners to the extent that the name of Democracy obtains, have been busy during the can~ vass proving the party not responsible for the clause in the Massachusetts constitution. ‘hey repudiated the principle therein involyed and plead, like dogs, to be absolved from the sin that a small portion of their brethren had comThey too, have-used the precious documents of General Cass, to alienate the foreigners from the administration. The election is now over, and a few truthful observations may not fall unheeded on the public ear. We have seen American citizens in the can‘yass just closed, nay, whole parties, humiltatingly acknowledge their dependence upon foreigners, and pander to their passions and prejudices. With the Democratic parties this is no new abasement. They fished for the foreigners years ago They canght the piscine exotics and have kept them ina Democratic aquarium to be called at the tap of the Tammany drum, or the whist'e ofa locofogo fug’enan ever since. Qur Republican friends have little to hope from foreign votesin this State for years tocome Why not make a bold stand against their opponents, and rely upon the intelligence of their own couns trymen for an appreciation of their principles, their objectsand aims? There are thousands of true Amesicans in this State who holdin contempt the appeals to the ignorant and prejudi ced who hap pen to have power in their hands without a proper sense of the responsibility inits use. No party gaizs caste by losing the respect of these thousands in the struggle to collect votes at the expense of intelligence. mitted’ against the foreigners. slavishly Heatruy Excirement.—In the midst of the long political fever which has been upon us during several months, a-healthy ‘excitement broke in on Mon“day morning, which furnished a delightfal little episode. One of our gallant artists, itseems, had painted one of his recherche signs for a whisky mill, on which he portrayed a charming female in the oyster trade, and very ungalJlantly had written thename of a respectable young lady of this city onit The thing being brought tothe notice ofabroth er of “the young lady, he repaired to “Where the pale artist plies his sickly trade” and incontinently without reserve attempted to “spile’’ the young man’s countenance. *. We learn that some blood was spilled . on the occasion. but that no real damage was done, save and except to the coun“tenance aforesaid. Lecompron OratToxs inf the recent _ Canvass paraded the sayings of Banks, ‘Greeley, Seward and other distinguished Republicans. to the effect that in certain contingencies the Union is mot worth preserving in connection with the South. We can’t see how the pot calling the keitle black is going to better the caste of the former. It is a fact patent to every well informed mind that the first c1y disrespectful of the union originated in a Democratic state and with Democrats. Your Rhetts, Spratts, Davises, Quitmans, and other southern fire eat‘ers are centinually blabbing about southern rights and a dissolution of the Union if they can’t have their own way. 300KER AND SisLey.—The patriotic course of Booker and Sibley, in with~ drawing from the canvass in accordance with the popular will ought to be and must be remembered hereafter to their benefits. Their magnanimous conduet is deserving.of the highest praise. They should have withdrawn a trifle earlier, but tha pressure of friends is in a great degree responsible for that. We_ hope the result of the election will demonstrate that Messrs Bookerand Sibley have rendered high service to their country, s was certainly their intent in retiring from the canvass, They made a Ou Temrora, Ou Morus.—It is true the election is over but we cannot refrain from noticing the seandalous and infamous attempt of little men to defame their betters made on the eve of electicn. One W.S Long, as mean a dogas ever jof J. S. Stebbins!! that Col. Baker of. fered to sell his services to said Stebbins to stump the state of Oregon for the ad' ministration ticket, become a candidate for the United States senate there and . if successful, then said Stebbins might . sell Baker’s votes in Washington to the best advantage!!! Inthe whole course . of our life have we never seen so contemp‘ible a statement—so base and ma. licious a stander. Why, no man who knew Stebbins in the Senate of this State would hesitate to brand the report as an infamous falsehood. No Lecomp, ton gentleman who hasany acquaintance with Stebbins would give the slightest eredence to aught he might say injurious to the character of Ool. Baker, and no man in that party buta dirty slave of the party would retail so palpable a lie on suéh authoritys We doubt even if that poor authority be not who!ly wantiug, and would as soon beleive that a tool who would send forth to the world such mendacious reports prejudicial to the character ofa gentleman above reproach, based on such authority, would not be above making the miserable charge out of whole cloth. Of all bare-~ faced, mean, cowardly and despicable attempts to injure a political enemy, and so utterly impotent withal, the whole history of politics may be safely challenged to produce a parallel, Stabling Affair—-James Jeffrey was stabbed by William Mason on Monday evening last. The affair is related to us in the following manner :— A person called “Gassy Jack” was engaged in a political talk with Mr Jeffrey in front of Carley’s saloon on Broad street, after the political mecting. on Monday evening when Mason took him by the arm and away saying he did not want him to talk with Jeffrey. Mason with Gassy Jack walked tothe middle of the strect. Jeffrey went to Mason and asked him what sort of a way that was to take one gentleman from anothggwhen conversing, Mason immediately struck Jeffrey a light blow in the left breast which Jeffrey interpreted only asa push, and as the expression of a desire of Mason to be left alone. Jeffrey went away, and not until after some minutes did he discover he had been stabbed. The wound was inflicted by asharp pointed, slim bladed knife which penetrated through a thick coat and heavily padded vest, and struck a rib. A quarter of aninch further and the knife wouid have entered a vital part which the thick clothing probably prevented. The wound bled profusely, Jeffrey is about as usual. No arrests have been made. Lecompron Meetinec,—The election is past, but the political meetin of the Lecomptons on Monday night must needs be recorded as anevent in the history of the times. Goorge Pen Johnson and Wm. F. Anderson addressed a large c:owd in front of Harrington & Patterson’s saloon on the evening above named. The style and eloquenee ofthe first speaker were decidedly Johnsonian. About a dozen took the job of cheering lustily at regular interrals while the rest were remarkably quiet and orderly. Johnson has the loudest voice that ever disturbed the echoes of this neighborhood. We learn that the ladies a quarter of a mile off could hear his very chaste stories had they been gross enough to listen: Wm. F. Anderson sugared off the meeting. Three cheers were proposed which came ina_ straggling and dubious manner. The same for Broderick, Baker and McKibben, on being suggested came with a will that demonstrated but few administration men were present. THe Exrcrion.—The election on Wednesday, beyond atl question was the most orderly one ever witnessed in this city. There was no fighting to disgrace it, no offensive language from excited politicians, and but two drunken men to be seen anywhere about the town, The greatest good feeling seemed to prevail generally. though men worked energetically for their friends, and in opposition to each othor with considerable pertinacity. So far as we have heard the same order and good feeling character~ ized the election in the outsid3 precincts, and probably the same prevailed over the county. A gradual change for the better in this respect has been taking place for several years past, indicitive of the amelioration of society, aud a return to the habits and customs of the older States from whenee we came. Newspaper Change.-—We learn that J. H. Boardman & Oo. wil! be the publishers of the Grass Valley National shortly. Our friend George Roberts has become perfectly a. blowing the horn of the administration party, and boarding himself, besides being responsible for losses, The National will Icse an active manager and supporter in Roberts.
