Collection: Original Records > Nevada City Minute Books

Book 1 - February 6, 1854 - April 9, 1856 (158 pages)

This is the first in the series of Nevada City minute books, recording the early meetings of the city's trustees. It spans from February 1854 (first 8 pages missing) to April 9, 1856. This book was somehow saved from the city-wide fire of July 19, 1856, which destroyed all the city's records, along with over 800 buildings.

All of the meeting minutes from May 1855 and 1856 were written by Aaron Sargent, city clerk at the time. He was also editor of the Nevada Journal newspaper. As a future Congressman and US Senator, he would go on to write the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862 and the words to the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, which granted women the right to vote.

In the middle of the 500 page book, half of which is blank, are 40 pages of reference notes and rules covering mathematics, units of measure and foreign currency conversions. Followed by some health and medical treatments.

This book was donated by Joseph Day, Councilman and Vice-Mayor of Nevada City in April 1970. He found the book at the Vanberg House on 124 Grove St, Nevada City. See his donation letter page 15 of this item.

The original is held at City Hall in Nevada City and was scanned by NCHS with the city's permission.
