Aevada Democrat,
~ LOCAL MATTERS.
Muscovy Duck.—At the risk of giving our
own pedigree, we have concluded to insert the
articles on the “Antiquity of the Muscovy
Duck,” the first of which will be found in another column. The learned author assures us
that the articles will be deeply interesting to
those who read them understandingly, and in
order that the unlearned may not be discouraged from perusing them, he has avoided, as
much as possible, the use of scientific terms,
clothing his ideas in our common vernacular.
it is uncertain when the next article of the series will appear; the author, however, has spoken fora column in the Democrat as often as
his communications are prepared.
Grass VaLtey Nationat.—Mr. W. 8S.
Byrne, formerly of the Mountain Messenger,
and Mr. J. P. Skelton, for several years cqnnected with the Journal and Transcript of this
place, have purchased interests in the Grass
Valley National, and will hereafter be associated with Mr. Ewer in its management. Mr.
Skelton started for San Francisco to-day, to
purchase new material for the office, and the
paper is to be suspended for 2 few day, to perfect business arrangements connected upon the
change of proprietorship.
Attempt TO BREAK JaAtL.—On Sunday afternoon, the Jailor discovered that Burke, confined in jail for the murder of Wright, had succeeded in freeing himself of his irons, with the
intention, doubtless, of attempting to escape
on the first favorable opportunity. The manacles had been sawed off, it is supposed, with
some instrument which had been left in the
cell by some former occupant, though the Jailor
could not find it.
Frost.—A severe frost occurred on Sunday
night, causing considerable damage to the early
fruit trees. It must have killed nearly all the
peach blossoms, but fortunately, not many of
the trees were in bloom, and we have stilla
chance for an average peach crop. The apple
trees are not far cnough advanced to be much
injured by the frost.
Tne WEATHER IN Manrcu.—Thermometrical observations in this place, noted three
times a day, shows the following daily mean
and range during the month of March:
—————e
TAM. 2P. M. 10P.™.

Tosacco Seep.—Dr.C, M. Bates advertises
Havana and Virginia tobacco seed for sale, at
the Broad Street Drug Store. Those who understand the cultivation of the weed would do
well to try the experiment. It might prove a
profitable investment.
HosritaAL Pattents.—During the month
of March last, only four patients were admitted
into the County Hospital—the smallest number admitted in that length of time for some
yesrs, There are now nineteen patients in the
Hospital under treatment.
PostPONED.—The great matched dog fight,
that was to have taken place at the Glenbrook
Race Course last Saturday, was postponed, on
account of the stormy weather, until next Sunday afternoon, at two o’clock.
Quartz CrusHinc.—The American Hill
Quartz Mill was cleaned up yesterday and day
before, after a month’s run, and something over
$7,000 taken out. We did not learn the num‘ber of tons of rock crushed.
Trim your Trees.—W. H. Crawford &
Co., advertise pruning shears, knives and saws,
for sale at their store on Main strect.

The following story is told at the expense of the .
rebel General Rains, of Missouri: It appears .
he had a tenant on his farm who was a staunch
Union man. The latter had given his notes to .
Rains, and Mrs. Rains held them for safe keep-.
ing. The tenant, in order to save the hay and .
grain raised by him on his farm, went to Mrs. .
Rains and made a delivery of the above articles
and took up the notes. Meantime Rains, wishing to replenish his commissary department
from the Union men, hinted one day to a foraging party the fact that a good haul would be
made on the premises of Mr.—— his own tenant. The articles were forthwith confiscated, .
agreeable to Rains’ suggestion—the point of
the joke consisting in this, that Rains unwit.
‘Ungly sacrificed his own property for the rebel .
cause,
Lake BicLer.—Homer Burton and a few
other gentleman came in from Lake Bigler on .
Saturday night with the first supply of trout
from that locality, which have been received
thisseason. The snow is yet about six feet
deep but is rapidly settling. They were compelled to come over at night while the snow was .
frozen. The water in the lake is two feet highet than ever before known—being at least six .
feet above low water mark. Ferguson’s schoo.
her—a vessel 52 feet keel and 18 beam—is now
making regular trips across the lake. Capt. .
Pray’s saw-mill on this side, had commenced .
running and was turning out a fine lot of lum;
ber—(Carson City Age.
Foor Racr.—On, Sunday morning last a foot .
race, for one mile, came off over the Willows’ .
Park Course, San Francisco, between the pume of Frank Wheeler’s Pioneer Gymnasium.
he race was well contested and Mr. L. P.
ard, a compositor in the Herald office, was .
lared the victor. Mr. Ward had been at .
work at the case the night before, and in order .
‘obe on hand, had not gone to bed, but re.
mained up all’ night.

To Correspondents.Patients residing in
any part of the State, however distant, who may desire the opinion and advice of Dr. Young, on their respective cases, and who think proper to submit a
written statement of such, in preference to holding a
personal interview, are respectfully assured that their
communications will be held most sacred. Dr. Young
takes this opportunity of observing that all letters
are only opened and replied to by himself, and the
latter as promptly as possible. If the case be fully
and candidly described, personal communications

and the general treatment of the case itself, (including the remedies,) will be forwarded without delay,
